With the storm letting up, a loud roar of something else was heard outside the walls of the old hotel. Landing on the field next to the hotel, the medical helicopter spun in wait for its patient. EMT's rushed into the hospital, finding the man in question, bleeding everywhere. While the doctor had been working on who they would learn to be one Leonardo Marino, his situation was dire. Family was rushed to the first launch back to the mainland, while the doctors and paramedics loaded Leo into the medical transport.

"His pulse is weak, multiple stab wounds to his chest and abdomen. His lung punctured and he has glass lodged in his back. I did what I could to stitch up the stab wounds and lung, but the damage is severe. I didn't want to take the glass out in case he bled out, so I wrapped around it to keep pressure off. He lost consciousness about twenty minutes ago, and he's still having difficulty breathing. He's lost a lot of blood..." Bianca rambled off her medical diagnosis as she helped the paramedics load Leo into the helicopter.

A skilled medical team descended on Leo as he came into the hospital, plucking and prodding inside of him to assess the damage and what could be done for him. His stitches were taken apart and redone, making sure that all of his internal organs were not damaged. He still had a punctured lung and glass buried deep in his back, but he was stable enough to move.

Gaining consciousness as the doctors waited for an OR to open, Leo demanded that he were able to see his family. His sisters, his brother, his son, his wife. There were things that needed to be said...just in case. The doctors advised against it, saying the longer they waited to take the glass out of him, the more danger he was in. Leo simply told them that he would make it quick. Maybe it was something in the back of the mind of a dying man, but he needed to say his goodbyes. Just in case.

Not a full twenty minutes was all he got before doctors upped his morphine and rolled him toward the OR. The last thing one Leo Marino would be able to feel was his wife's hand slipping out of his hand and sweet release of anesthetic sinking him into blackness.

Some of the best surgeons in the state of Massachusetts worked for nearly two hours to save Leo's life. So much blood had been lost, and with Leo's rare blood type, the hospital did not have enough of it in supply. While his immediate family might be able to donate, and would have done so if given the opportunity, their blood was useless, as everyone had been drinking that night. It turned out that while the glass knife had indeed caused blood to be lost, it also served to hold in place a punctured artery. The second it was pulled from his back, blood pooled out of the wound faster than the doctors could get into repair the damage. The knife in his back, while it was inevitably was his death sentence, had also given him the time to say goodbye to his family.

Leonardo Marino bled out on the table at Boston Medical Center. Time of death. March 11, 2008, 3:47 am

The head surgeon of his medical team washed his hands and took off his blood soaked gown. His cap was slid off as he walked down the hallway that seemed a little longer today. Walking into the waiting room, he was met with the hopeful and yet, seemingly already grieving faces of Leo's family.

"I'm...so sorry. We did everything we possibly could. We lost him."

Niccy sat in the waiting room impatiently, his knees bouncing a mile a minute. His elbows leaned into his thighs and he was bent over, watching the floor. He'd been in that position for hours, occasionally getting up to steal coffee for everyone from the nurse's lounge. He'd had time to say goodbye and good luck to a semi-conscious Leo before he went into surgery, but Niccy was beyond nervous.

He was petrified.

It was calmed a bit by the optimistic outlook the trauma surgeons had given Leo. They seemed convinced they could fix it, they could take the glass out of his back and save him. It was just going to take awhile. Niccy stood from his chair, circling the room like a caged dog. "God dammit, this is taking too long," he announced loudly and impatiently to the whole room, sighing and running his hand over his face. "Wh-"

As Niccy was to launch into a rant about the staff at the hospital, one of the doctors showed up, covered in as much blood as Niccy and the rest of the family was. Niccy turned on his heel, his eyes wide with expectation of good news.

His heart fell and he became immediately angry. He hadn't been there when Leo died, he didn't get to say his final goodbyes. They'd lied, they said they could save him. Niccy's eyes narrowed, and he took a few long steps forward toward the doctor. "YOU FUCKING LIAR." Niccy stared at him, inches from his face, his jaw clenching hard. "You said he was stable, and you could save him. YOU GOD DAMNED, MOTHER FUCKING LIAR." He stuck a finger into the doctors chest, glaring hard at him. He could feel his whole face twitch, then he reared back, ready to punch him in the jaw.

Instead, Niccy turned, landing his fist into the wall and leaving a large hole in the drywall. He let out an angry scream, then stormed out of the room, heading toward the exit of the hospital. He thought better of it, but stayed in the hall to avoid actually assaulting the doctor. He needed to be there for his family.

A moment in the hall calmed him, and immediately Niccy was overcome with grief. He leaned against the wall, uncontrollable sobs coming at the news sinking in. Leo was gone. He slid down the wall, burying his face in his hands and slumping into his knees.

Having refused to leave his side, Illana arrived at the hospital with Leo, and she didn't let go of his hand until one of the doctors physically removed her hand from his. She then covered her face with that hand to hold back the sobs that were threatening to break free as they wheeled her husband away from her. She stared down the hall he had disappeared down for a few minutes before the doctors came back and told them that they could see him before the surgery. Once again, she held his hand, pleasantly surprised by how he was talking to them. He didn't seem like he was back to 100%, but he was coherant. She told him how much she loved him, that she loved him forever and always, and clutched his hand until the doctors wheeled him away from her. Taking a few deep breaths, she moved to the waiting room with the family.

The wait was absolutely horrible. She paced back and forth for an hour, and then sat in a chair, staring down the hall for an hour, and then was back to pacing again. She wasn't sure how long it was taking, but she was beginning to get antsy and anxious. She just wanted to see her husband again. She had said her goodbyes, just incase, but she wanted to see him again.

She was sitting in one of the chairs, her legs pulled up and her arms wrapped around them when she noticed the doctor come into the waiting room. Not moving from her chair, she heard the news he gave, and the world around her seemed to fade away. His words kept repeating in her head, and tears sprung to her eyes. Her hand came up to cover her mouth, and she choked back a sob. She heard muffled screams that she assumed came from Niccy, but she couldn't force herself to move. She was apparently in shock. The doctors had given her a false sense of hope, telling her that he was stable, and all they'd have to do was remove the piece of glass from his back. That simple. And now, her husband was gone. He had left her all alone.

Illana gave into the sobs that she'd been holding back all night, hugging her knees close to her. "Leo ... no," she cried, over and over again. She wasn't even putting on the strong face for her family, like she knew Leo would have wanted. Her world was falling apart, her heart was breaking. The love of her life was gone for good.
