Tess knew that she was fit, per society's standards but she also knew she wasn't perfect. She didn't really make much effort to eat well, and she had some lumpy spots that she wanted to take care of before the wedding. She had a pretty good idea that the dress she ended up choosing would be pretty tight fighting, and she wanted to look good. She wanted Danny to be breathless. So beginning Monday, she had cut junk food and soda out of her diet entirely. She couldn't give up coffee to save her life, but she was going to make the effort to have hers prepared in a healthier way, at least until October 19th came and went. Danny had brought up trying to have a baby soon, too. She knew the healthier she was, the healthier any kid would be. But she wasn't 100% certain that she was ready for that just yet. Even if they could disappear from this place at the drop of a hat.
Grace was probably even more pumped than she was. But Tess loved her more for it. They got ready together. The girl helped her pin her hair into an updo, since she planned to wear her hair that way for the wedding. With them ready, they hugged and kissed Danny goodbye and raced into the Jeep so they could meet the other girls at the store. Grace was chatty and lively in the car on the way over, and Tess found it easy to sit there and listen to her and to comment occasionally on her simple, but heartfelt views on life. She really loved the kid like she was her own. She sort of wished her real mom could be there for her, but she knew deep down that it was just another reason that she had to be the best role model that she could for Grace. She felt like marrying her Dad would set something of a positive example for her. That love really did exist. People could start over. No one had set that example for her.
Arriving at the store, she parked where she could and held Grace's hand tightly as they went inside to await her guests, glancing around at the dresses on mannequins. Grace's eyes were wide as saucers when she realized just how fancy some of them were. "Tess, you have to get like, the biggest, prettiest princess-y dress that they have, okay?"
"No," Tess said, but she said it lightly and with a smile when Grace glanced up at her. "I have to get the dress that's most like me."
"Oh," Grace's confused expression melted away to a smile. "That totally makes sense!"
