Alex listened to him, still leaning against the counter with her arms crossed over her chest. "I'm sorry Neal, that had to be really horrible." Nikolai had always claimed that what he was doing was for the benefit of his daughter, for the Udinov family...but Alex never wanted that. No person should have to see their parent choose something else over them. And both of Neal's parents had abandoned him, in a way. It wasn't right or fair. And she knew something about what that was like. They'd both apparently had pretty shitty childhoods. Maybe they should start a club or something.
Alex stood up straight for a moment. "I'm going to grab a bottle of water from the fridge, do you want one?" She asked. He was her guest, after all. Even if this was about helping him bake a delicious cake for his friend. She'd thought he'd done an okay job so far, it didn't have to be perfect, and if the finished product wasn't so great, they could start over. It wasn't like she had anywhere else to be today. And she liked talking to him, which was probably obvious because she'd gone into more detail about her past with him than she had with anyone she didn't know before she'd gotten here. He didn't seem to judge her the way other people might, and he didn't pity her either.
Before walking to the fridge, she looked at what he'd been mixing. "I think that's pretty close to what it should look like, at least." There wasn't much left to do but put it in a pan, and into the oven for the amount of time stated on the recipe.
