As wrong as it might feel to Jo to use those commands to get him to do one thing or another it was the easiest way and it would never seem cruel to him. It was what he knew, what he understood, and as ignorant as he was to just how terrible it was it never struck him as confusing or inappropriate. One day he might see things as Jo did, he might be able to look back on all of these behaviours and see just how awful they were but right now nothing felt more right to him than the simple act of obeying.
Though he didn't see the way Jo deflated at the aversion of his eyes he sensed it, as highly attuned as he was to those sorts of energies he was able to pick up on it in the movements of the air and his fellow wolf's mood and how that affected her scent and other such small indicators. To his credit he managed to keep from reacting in any way that could have been read as shameful, just one more thing that would have a negative affect on the female sitting to his side. In the same position as him, he realised, which almost made him move before he put it together with what she had only just said. Jo wanted them to be equals and as much as that seemed wrong to Sam he could try to make her less uncomfortable if nothing else.
"I shouldn't have said anything," he said quietly, glancing towards the trees, shaking his head a little. It was all his fault, really, he never should have drawn Jo's attention towards the trees in the first place and if he hadn't done that, if he had just sat quietly and kept it all to himself, they could have avoided this. That was his fault too, he knew. The way he reacted to things was messy and confusing to others who weren't used to him. That wasn't their fault. It was his. "I'm sorry." Sam made sure to put emphasis on that, on his blame and how his actions had started this whole thing, but he was quiet and calm enough about it as he did so that he wouldn't upset Jo further. That was the hope anyway.
