Pencil firmly lodged between her teeth Jo munched on it with anxiety as she watched Sam. He seemed to be deciding whether or not to tell her the truth of what was worrying him, and while normally Jo did not want to push, in this case she had already decided she absolutely would. Everything about his demeanor made the hairs at the back of her neck stand, and there was every possibility that whatever was garnering such a reaction out of him was a very real dangerous thing. It wasn't as if Jo had any reason to think otherwise; Sam was usually a fidgety nervous sort but not prone to misplaced panic. And he was almost at panic.
When he finally came out with it Jo looked back to where his eyes had been glued intensely. She couldn't see anything now but that didn't mean it wasn't there. Judging by his expression, something was very possibly terrifying. "Something like what?" She asked fearfully. "Someone?"
There was no point in just sitting here waiting for whatever was out there to attack or give either of them a nervous breakdown. Setting the notebook beside her on the bench Jo took the pencil out of her mouth for good and stood up. If it was nothing she and Sam could rest easy, if it was indeed something bad she could sound the alarm. A few steps in toward the trees and Jo looked over her shoulder. "Stay put, I'll check it out real quick."
