He hadn't meant to draw her attention but he didn't even realise that he had. That was probably for the best. Sam would only become increasingly sheepish and apologetic if he noticed he had made Jo uncomfortable or upset, he felt awkward enough as it was showing up here uninvited when this was something for the family to pursue together, something for them to band together and face. Sam wasn't family but had come anyway, and with news that probably could have waited. He did hear her sniffle though and glanced back her way but it was to the sight of a smile that he did so, triggering another fleeting rush of confusion that he worked quickly to put aside in a corner of his mind. Jo didn't like it when he was confused, from what he could tell.
She said it was good, that he liked her, and that was enough for him. His nod was small, like all his gestures, and he glanced up at least enough to see the smile, even if he didn't lift his eyes high enough to meet her gaze. So he saw that smile, read the gratitude there before she thanked him with words, though he wasn't sure what he had done that was worthy of thanks. "I didn't know where else to go," he admitted, though afterwards he realised maybe that wasn't the right thing to say at all. He should have said something else. Asked about her brother and sister, maybe. Sam regretted not asking but it was too late to take it back now.
