the more i see, the less i know.
Who: Sam and Simon.
Where: A random street not far from the Summers’ house.
When: Late morning.
Sam hadn’t left his room for long at all since arriving, he’d only been in town a couple of days and he hadn’t wanted to step on any toes or overstay his welcome too soon. After ruffling a few feathers -- though with wolves he supposed it was fur that you ruffled, not feathers -- during his arrival he’d wanted to keep to himself, let things settle down, let them get used to him. There wasn’t much to get used to really, he didn’t take up much room or make any noise, he didn’t ask for anything and he certainly wasn’t the type to intentionally make things awkward for anyone. That was exactly what he tried to avoid, that was the sort of thing that made him anxious, so very anxious, his stomach clenching and his chest tightening, hands trembling and breaths coming in short little rushes. No, he just wanted to belong here, if he could, and the best way to do that was not to cause any waves, to just blend into the background.
When he’d emerged from his room that morning Mrs. Summers had caught him in the upstairs hallway, she’d been carrying laundry and had smiled at him, engaging him in conversation -- or what passed for conversation with Sam, at least -- before he could bid a hasty retreat. Head on out and take a look around, she’d told him, and from his expression she must have figured out he’d initially thought she was kicking him out. Do a little exploring, I’ll have lunch ready around midday, so don’t wander too far! That had puzzled Sam, it had taken him a good half hour to put all the pieces together and make sense of it. The simplest things were confusing to him, the suggestion that he take a walk, something so everyday and mundane, throwing him so much more than it should have.
But here he was doing as he’d been told, respecting the older she-wolf’s judgement and walking along a street he didn’t recognise, hoping in the back of his mind that he could get back to the house easily enough without having to rely too heavily on his nose. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d had to follow his own scent and it wouldn’t be the last, but it was a little difficult to do it discreetly when there were so many humans around. Sam didn’t want to attract any attention, not only to himself but to the pack. Their Alpha might have gone public but not everyone in the pack had and he didn’t want to cause any trouble.
So caught up in thinking about the route he’d taken from the house he almost walked into a small group of people heading his way. Immediately Sam stepped out of their way, moving to the side and turning to watch them go. Turning probably wasn’t the best idea, he realised too late, especially not when he was so close to the entrance of a shop of some kind, and especially not when someone was stepping out of that door onto the street. Sam’s instincts kicked in and he turned again, shrinking a little before he could stop himself from doing so, lifting his empty gloved hands to go right along with the apology that came tumbling out of his mouth. “I’m so sorry.” He spoke so quickly that the words kind of merged together, each one blending awkwardly into the next.
