As intense as his Omega conditioning was Sam was perfectly capable -- albeit subconsciously -- of turning just about any moment awkward, he had developed a knack over the years of making other people feel uncomfortable, at least those who didn't belong to the Evans Pack back in Montana. No one else really knew how to deal with him, how to interact with him, most of them just wrote him off within the space of a few minutes and moved along, only too glad to pretend they hadn't met him at all. Sam didn't notice that August had sped up the process of eating his food on his behalf, for all the Omega knew the Alpha was just hungry, he'd had a long day and hadn't had a chance to refuel before now. Maybe he hadn't had any lunch. Even when August was finished with his plate Sam didn't start eating from his, he was still too astonished by the offer that had been laid in front of him.
For as long as he needed? Sam was overwhelmed. In his shock he'd actually held eye contact a little too long but the suggestion that was worded a little more like a command -- even if it was a gently-worded one, an oddity in and of itself in Sam's mind -- gave him a good reason to drop his gaze to the as-of-yet untouched plate in front of him. "Okay," he said, lifting his gaze briefly again, actually managing a small smile, shy and a touch wary. "Thank you. So much." There was still a part of him that wasn't certain, that worried this might be some sort of test, but Sam was so tired that the idea of having a roof over his head, even if only for one night, was too much to pass up. And August had offered, hadn't he? Sam smiled again, just as shyly, and nodded at what August said next. He hoped his decision to come here wouldn't backfire, or at least he would if he was in the habit of hoping. It wasn't really hope, not in the traditional sense, but as he finally paid attention to the food on the plate in front of him he felt something that resembled it for the first time in what had to be years.
