What is this?
Who: Halne and Farren
When: early evening, close to sunset
Where: Scarlet Oak park
All of the attention that the park was getting in the news from the strangely colored plants and flowers had finally worked its way through Halne's mind enough that she was curious enough to venture out to see. Bolstered by some fae blood she'd had when she'd woken up well before sunset, she eased herself out of Camelot Place and walked her way towards the park. It was still raining a little bit, but she was not the least bit worried about her clothes, seeing as she couldn't really be bothered to care if they got wet. She didn't take cold, so why should she worry? The walk was peaceful, the drizzle lending the world a hazy, soft sort of quality. Dreamlike. Halne hummed to herself as she walked, her eyes taking in her surroundings as she thought. Her mind was filled with everything and nothing; had she finished that column she was writing? Had Alex been good enough on the piece she'd given him to practice that he could move on to the next one? Did the new music she'd gotten from the library give her enough to work with? The library. The memory brought a smile to her face and Halne thought of Athena. The bronze-haired woman was never very far from her thoughts these days. Would it be too soon to see her again? Halne wasn't sure. She could always call her and find out..
When her feet finally felt grass under them instead of concrete, Halne smiled to herself, wandering into the park. She took in the sights and sounds, drinking them in like so much water -- or blood. Never in her life had she seen anything quite like the strange, zebra-striped flowers, or the hot pink leaves that were all around her. Any strange combination of color or pattern she could imagine was on display. This is not right, she thought. But for some reason, the flowers didn't smell anything out of the ordinary. Scenting the air, Halne picked up a new scent. A fresh scent, and she followed along the side of a group of trees before she found its source. Were those...berries? Reaching out to touch one, Halne definitely felt the soft consistency of fruit beneath her fingertips. "What on earth..?" The most startling thing about this whole discovery was that...these berries smelled so good, she wanted to eat one. She stood stock-still, her fingers brushing against one of the pieces of fruit, contemplating. With barely another thought, Halne plucked the berry from the brush and popped it into her mouth. The taste of it burst against her mouth as she bit down, her tongue flooded with the juice. Almost immediately she felt a giggle bubbling up from her chest. That was odd! Wrinkling her brow up at that, Halne grabbed another berry and ate that one, too. Pretty soon, the desire to giggle finally got the better of her and she did. The sound was alien to her ears -- she'd not heard it since before. Before she was damned, before she was a monster. Before.
Squinting up at the sky, Halne thought she saw her children's faces in the clouds.
