Summary: Terry catches Katie falling asleep on the job.
Katie stuck her head in Ben's bedroom and listened to the reassuring sound of the steady rhythm of his breathing. He'd gone down fairly easily after Katie'd read him a few stories. They'd been playing outside in his 'pirate fort' (a treehouse in the garden) and it seemed to have tired him out nicely.
She refilled her water glass in the kitchen and went back into the living room, curling up on Terry's ridiculously comfortable leather couch. She wondered how his date was going. The bloke had picked Terry up so she'd gotten a look at him. He was nice and fairly easy on the eyes. He'd obviously been into Terry. But Terry had the worst luck with dates. Katie was certain he'd been on more first dates than anyone else she knew.
Bob, Terry's English Sheepdog, padded into the room and sat at her feet. Katie reached out automatically to pet his shaggy head while she thought about Terry's disastrous dating career. She'd be lying if she said she'd never thought about him as more than a friend. He was clever, funny and a terrible flirt. He was a good writer and — most importantly — a great father. He'd been through horrible things (the death of his parents, becoming a werewolf) and managed to come through them somehow. Dating Terry was definitely appealing in many ways. But the consequences of a bad break-up were heavy: she might lose Terry's friendship. She might never see Ben again. It seemed like too high a price to pay.
Katie sighed and Bob replied with a stinky fart. "Thank you," she said, wrinkling her nose. She nudged him with her foot and he retreated to the kitchen, taking his fart smells with him. Katie leaned back and closed her eyes. Terry would be home soon. She'd just rest for a bit before doing the washing up.
