Dear Journal,
Sometimes Michael talks back too much to be a proper listener, and so I must turn to you.
I have been thinking about my life. More specifically, about how uncool I feel at Christmas time. Why, you ask; well, it's perfectly obvious. Christmas is a time for family, and I don't have any.
I don't want one all the time, of course, that would be hideous. If only I could rent some children. If Calvin was the wonderful big brother he claimed to be, he ought to let me borrow his two little kidlets for holiday occasions. (Not that stepson of his, but those two adorable ethnic ones. I would feel very much like world peace was a brilliant idea if I had one of them on each arm.)
Thank Merlin Christmas is not for another eleven months. At least that leaves me plenty of time to concoct a plan. Yes, yes, I remember telling you I gave up trickery and guile this year, but that doesn't mean I can't make plans. I will simply have to be more forthright about them. It's not impossible. Jack Sloper is not going to be uncool-at-Christmas any longer, even if he has to wear holiday-themed jumpers to fit in. (I bet Grant owns one.)
In the meantime, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to get to know Archie better, even if he is too old to mold in any kind of way. Did you know it's his birthday in three days? I certainly didn't, until Michael told me yesterday. It's his seventeenth as well (God that makes me feel old) and since it's his coming-of-age, I think I ought to make an effort.
Luckily I already have the perfect gift idea. It's going to be spectacular.
-Jack
PS: Birthday planning is exempt from the 'no trickery or guile' clause.
