Re: Packed to the rafters
"You sound like you have some experience with kids," Alyssa remarked with a curious smile. "You're right about that, though we try to minimize the stress by switching shifts in the mornings, that way, neither of us gets too burned out."
She watched as Spencer locked the door, quirking an eyebrow curiously, wondering what the treasurer was so nervous about. "Uhhh..." Put on the spot by this surprising command, Alyssa was momentarily lost for words. Though she'd thought a lot about what they needed, if only the resources were available, it took her a moment to gather her thoughts. "Okay, well let's see. We need more room - a lot more. Not just for the kids we already have with us, but also for the ones who are likely to seek refuge with us in the coming months. More have been arriving as the nights grow colder, so by winter, who knows how many we'll have? The war and the plague left a lot of children orphaned." Alyssa explained, her eyes dampening. She blinked back the tears before they could fall, "More beds and bedding, more bathrooms."
"Along with more room," Alyssa went on, "We really need more staff. At the moment, there are just the two of us, taking it in shifts, which was manageable when we had less kids to supervise, but now that we have so many, it can get a little crazy. At least two guardians per shift would be good, and we have a lot of mouths to feed, so possibly someone to help out in the kitchen?" She suggested, thinking that was probably too much to hope for, "The problem is, we can't hire just anyone. The sad fact is, there are a lot of creeps out there. We have to know that whoever we hire is trustworthy, that they're not going to take advantage of the kids. My gift gift doesn't show me what people are thinking, only glimpses of their pasts and sometimes their futures - but they're just that, glimpses. So maybe you can arrange to put us in touch with a mind-reader or an empath to sit in on the interviews to help us with the screening process?"
