Meg ground her teeth. This was stupid. She was standing at the door to Lafitte's bar, a dilapidated building that, if the plaque outside was telling the truth, had once been a blacksmith. She was strangely unwilling to enter. She had no weapons, beyond herself of course, and no idea what might be waiting for her inside. For all she knew, the moment they walked through the door Dean might pop out of hiding and shove his damn knife right into her chest. The whole situation had "trap" written all over it, but Cas had insisted and she wasn't about to let him out of her sight. Not again. So she had suggested this place as neutral ground that would, in theory, be nicely populated with potential casualties. She hoped it was enough to keep her safe. Having Castiel beside her helped. She didn't know if they were aware of the depth of their connection, but she hoped they wouldn't be so ready to kill her with him standing at her side. The truth was that she didn't know what to expect from Sam. Was he her enemy? Had he purposefully left her high and dry when Jo had rolled into tow? She had to admit that it hadn't seemed like something he would do. It sounded like a Dean plan, really. Get her word that she wouldn't hurt the girl, then set Jo loose in the hopes that she might be able to take the demon out on her own. No sticky ethical dilemmas that way. It definitely didn't see like the kind of thing Sam would've been okay with, but his radio silence in the weeks that followed had left a bad taste in her mouth. "If I get stabbed," she said to Castiel through clenched teeth, "I'm liquifying every person in this damn place." She wasn't happy. Her body was tense and she stood a step further away from him than she'd been accustomed to of late. She hadn't reached to touch him the whole way here, and stood too far away now to make any form of contact seem natural. She resisted the urge to let her eyes fade to black. If she was honest with herself, she would admit that she was afraid. But instead, she let herself be angry. It was easier, and much safer. |
