Who: Liam & Abi
What: Exploring the island?
Where: Starting outside the main building, girls' dorms entrance
When: Wednesday night after this
Things had been going so well. He'd got at least three friends, Madison was back to ignoring him all the time, and he was even starting to do better in his classes. One of the TAs had even pulled him aside to congratulate him on his improvement, saying that for once his homework hadn't given her a headache trying to decipher it - which he was pretty sure still counted as a compliment. And then he'd had to go for a walk in the middle of the night. Looking back on it, he wished he'd just let them get on with whatever they were doing, and he would have pretended he'd never seen anything - certainly that was what the old Liam would have done. But no, he'd had to get in the way and try and stop them leaving. And somehow he'd still gotten in trouble! At least it felt like he was in trouble, being asked questions for what felt like hours, blanket and cocoa not withstanding. What had he been doing out so late? Had he been involved in the plan and backed out at the last minute? It didn't seemed to matter how many times he tried to explain that the idea of him being involved in any kind of plan that involved Mena Bones was pretty laughable. No, he didn't know where they'd gone or why. He didn't know where Gabe had gone after he'd run off and left him still tied to the tree. He'd tried to get out with telekinesis, willing the ropes to undo themselves, but it was very hard when he couldn't see what he was doing, and anyway by the time he came to the ropes were thick and swollen with sea-spray, and his head pounded around the giant bruise coming up on the side of his head where Mena had punched him, making it nearly impossible to concentrate. Days later he was still a little jumpy, and avoided Mena as much as possible when she was in class. He didn't think he'd be able to stop himself from getting into a fight, girl or no girl, and he didn't need Kaia and Abi mad at him as well on top of everything else. He kept his head down, comfortable only in the knowledge that he wasn't the only one having trouble keeping their mind on their work, and studied in his room rather than the girls' common space. After a few days of that he understood Abi's need for distraction perfectly, though he wasn't entirely sure he was up to the task. When he went to find Abi he waited outside the building, not wanting to be found lurking around in the halls. "Hey," he said, sticking his hands in his pockets as she came out. He hadn't given her all the details of what had happened, specifically the part where Mena had knocked him out with a single punch - humiliating, not to mention awkward - but a lot of rumours were already swirling around and the side of his face was changing from a dark purple to puke green. He was sure everyone knew by now. |
