Kaia had not at all minded being asked to help Liam with his schoolwork. She was used to tutoring, having made a little extra money throughout junior and senior year by doing just that. Studying was what she was good at. And while she had been ambivalent about the boy before now, other than thinking that he was nice-looking in a sullen, lopsided sort of way, she couldn't help but feel sorry for him once she realised how far behind he really was. Pretty much the only academic subject he didn't need help with was Spanish, and even there his spelling left just as much to be desired as it did whenever he wrote in English. She had put aside her own studies for almost a week - not really much of a sacrifice, as she had already read ahead in most cases - in order to reorganise his notes, replacing them where necessary, making him cheat-sheets and flashcards, and devising several mnemonic devices to help him remember some of the concepts that seem to escape him no matter how many times it was repeated, particularly in Healing, Ethics and Alchemy. Abi also helped when she had time, though it had been a difficult couple of weeks for her, and Kaia did her best to relieve the burden as much as possible. With each group study session, either the two or the three of them together or with the other girls, and sometimes with a couple of the other boys from their year, Liam grew less uncomfortable with needing so much help, and even asked questions without being prompted, which she counted as a victory. On Monday night, once the three of them had been over the recipe cards they had all had to work on for their Salves class the next morning, Kaia decided they had been working hard enough, and it was time for a little fun. "How about we practice some telekinesis?" she asked, brightly, and saw Liam perk up a little at the suggestion. "I heard rumours we might have a test tomorrow." |
