It was only as the last hymn began - the rousing if rather bloody Battle Hymn of Republic of all things - that William realized he should have explained the praying before he began. His father being church folk, William didn't have much experience with this, expecting it to be simple without realizing how much of it he took for granted, how much he did automatically. Even when in the army he'd managed to attend church every few weeks or so. The alms tray came up the pew and he took it before it could be passed to Hattie, putting in a few coins for the two of them and passing it in, resolving to try and explain everything better after the service was over, as it shortly would be - once the last hymn was over, Father Marks would bid them a good-day and people would start to leave.
