William's fervour was too sweet for Hattie not to at least make an effort to join in. With a rather anxious little smile back at him, she drew in breath and started to sing, reading the notes in the book. It always annoyed her no end that she could see what the notes were supposed to be but when she opened her mouth, they didn't come out quite as planned. It was even harder trying to read the words at the same time as the notes.
But she tried. She fumbled along through the song, cheeks growing steadily hotter at the effort, but swept along by the enthusiasm of those around her.
