Letter sent to Obediah Jones
Dear Sir:
This is the list that you requested during my visit to your fine establishment:
- As mentioned, of course the bed with the lavender blankets that I will require for my practice.
- The walls of my office, and perhaps the door as well.
- The walls of your office, for that matter.
- Any desk or practice table I might have, as well as the same with yours
- Should the invitation to swim in the river be still on offer for the next summer, perhaps a tree at the same location, or the ground in some soft patch.
- I should be interested to see, some day, what your tavern is like with no patrons inside. The bar in particular.
- I am no fine cook, and perhaps some time a tour through a proper kitchen might be in order.
There are more, I think, but I think -- if I may be so bold -- should the banns be said, should this go further, that most importantly you should hold me to this: a pledge to hold myself to the highest standards of decency, and to break those standards in the name of honesty.
I must confess it: I wish to go much further with you -- with all the meanings that might allow. I confess further I dream of it.
I school myself now to not be unseemly, but know that such thoughts do, shamefully, yet cross my mind.
Yours in faith,
Charles Carmichael.
