It had been a long week, and Verity was tired. She still wasn't sleeping well, not since she'd started thinking about the person who'd killed her, and the lack of sleep seemed to be making every other negative emotion much more intense. Seeing Gemma had been nice, but had also come with a lot of news that Verity wasn't sure she knew how to process. She felt so young, compared to Gemma. So left-behind. It made her worry how things would be with her family, if she was ever allowed to see them. She'd missed so much. Were her brothers in relationships? Did they have children? Were here parents still together? Was her lola still alive? They were questions Verity simply had no answers to, and that was exhausting.
She'd been glad to go to work, where all that anyone demanded of her was that she fetch them a pie, or tell them when the next batch of bread rolls was expected to be finished. It was mostly easy work, and little about the role of shop assistant had changed in the nine years Verity had been dead. The cosy, cheerful bakery did throw the emptiness of her house into unfortunate relief, she realised when she apparated back. It didn't feel like a home - let alone her home - and Verity wasn't sure how to fix that by herself. For the time being, she put the kettle on and cut the loaf her boss had all but forced on her into slices, arraying them on a plate. She was nibbling on one when Siobhan arrived and Verity lead her through to the kitchen. "I brought food home from work, if you're hungry," she offered, gesturing to one of the seats at the table. "And do you want a drink?" Somehow, without really meaning to, Verity seemed to have picked up a decent amount of what was going on in Siobhan's life now. "I bumped into Roger, and he told me you married Max," she said. "I suppose it was ages ago for you." She smiled, a little waveringly. "How is he?"
