With a career that she absolutely enjoyed having Gemma had always taken care with her health and it seemed almost as if hardly ever, if at all, that she got sick. Yet for the past week or so she'd been feeling increasingly nauseous throughout the day, and felt that she tired a little more quickly than she usually did despite her Quidditch season having finished at least a week ago. If she had actually still been training she would've put her tiredness down to that, but it still wouldn't have explained why she'd been feeling so sick of late though. Gemma hadn't yet let on to anyone that she was actually feeling unwell since the nausea seemed to come and then pass rather infrequently that she hadn't yet been worried, and she didn't want to needlessly worry anyone over what would or could possibly turn out to be nothing. However, after nearly a week of feeling like crap Gemma had finally decided to go to St. Mungo's and get looked at to make sure it wasn't actually anything serious. The healer smiled reassuringly as she turned her attention to Gemma. "Alright, well, that was the last test. It'll take a little while for the results to come through, but we should have them today." "Uh, how long exactly?" she asked warily. Gemma didn't think she could handle waiting for any longer than a few days at most, even though she was aware that Muggles had to sometimes wait a long while for their test results sometimes. "Oh, it'll certainly be sometime today," she replied, hoping that the answer reassured the young woman a little more. "Actually, if you'd like to go wait down at the tea room we should be able to give you your results soon enough without you needing to come back in later." Gemma nodded and thanked the healer, before leaving to head down to the 5th floor where the tea room was. Feeling peckish Gemma had ordered a sandwich and some fruit juice. She had had every intention of finishing both off, and yet the smell and even after she attempted a few bites of the sandwich she started feeling a little queasy. It probably didn't help much that she was also worried about what the results would reveal. In the end Gemma had managed to finish the juice but hadn't managed more than few bites of the sandwich itself when she'd heard her name over St. Mungo's PA-like system asking her to report to the 6th floor. Once Gemma was back up in the healer's office she sat down and nervously waited to hear of her results. She couldn't read anything in the healer's face as to whether it was good or bad news. "So is it good news or bad news?" "Well, the good news is that it's nothing at all serious. It's actually rather normal for what you have, and actually should disappear in time," she told Gemma. "Most women will experience some or a lot of nausea during pregnancy - particularly this early on." Gemma was a little lost in thinking about how she didn't see how it could possibly be normal to have been feeling like she had that she almost missed what the healer had said next. She blinked, feeling absolutely sure she must have heard her wrong. "I'm sorry, what?" The healer smiled good-naturedly, not at all taken aback by the surprised tone in Gemma's voice. She'd found it wasn't at all uncommon for the women she saw to be surprised at finding out they were pregnant. At least those not actively trying to conceive. "We carried out all the necessary tests, and the only one that came back positive was for pregnancy," she explained. Gemma sat there stunned at the news. She'd always been so careful with keeping up to date with her birth control potions, and just couldn't think of how she managed to miss taking her last one. No. No, it wasn't possible and the healer must've made some mistake. There wasn't a chance she could possibly be at all pregnant. The healer looked at Gemma worriedly, and cautiously tried to get her attention. "Miss Higgs?" Hearing her name called, Gemma looked up at the healer and realised she hadn't yet responded in anyway - except for shocked silence. "Are you sure?" she asked quietly. "Quite sure, Miss Higgs," she responded. "I could run the tests for you again if you'd like, but they would only give the same results as they initially did." Feeling a little worried about Gemma's reaction to the news, and feeling she possibly might need some company for the time being, prompted her to ask, "Is there anyone you'd like me to contact to come get you?" Her eyes widened at the healer's offer to contact someone, and she hurriedly shook her head. "N-no, thank you. I'm sure I'll be alright in a moment," she said with a smile. Though it was obviously not at all real because she was quite sure she wasn't fine but she didn't want to have to deal with anyone else knowing right now. Especially not when her emergency contact would be the most likely choice, and right now she wasn't entirely sure she could face seeing, let alone telling, her brother. The healer didn't quite believe Gemma's statement, but she could hardly force the matter unless she very seriously thought there was any real danger to Gemma remaining on her own. "I'm sure this is something of a shock and that you'll need some time, however, it's best if we can start setting up future appointments for you as your pregnancy progresses," she told Gemma. If she'd been asked later Gemma wouldn't have been able to tell anyone what had been discussed after that as it all seemed to have moved in something of a blur, and if it wasn't for the bit of paper in her hand she likely wouldn't have remembered when her first appointment was. In a daze she thanked the healer for her time and said goodbye, before apparating home moments later. Gemma wasn't sure how long she had actually sat on the couch for just staring off into the distance. Though when she 'finally came to' and looked around, she realised it was starting to get dark outside. This time she was aware when Butterscotch nudged at he hand for attention, and she gave the dog a quick scratch behind the ears. "Sorry, girl," she told the dog with a watery smile. "Got some pretty big news today, and I'm not sure what to do." Gemma sighed when she realised that some time quite soon she would have to go tell Adrian. After all he had a right to know, didn't he? She just wasn't at all sure how was she supposed to tell him when she couldn't quite comprehend it herself at the moment. It was certainly a fine mess she'd gotten herself into. |
