Higgs wasn't really sure why his parents had decided to rebuild the little wall surrounding their front garden, since it hadn't really seemed damaged in the first place, but they had and Higgs tried not to question what his parents got up to. They weren't retired yet (not fully, since his dad was now only working part-time) and Higgs had no idea what they were going to do then, since this was the sort of shit they got up to whilst still having full- (and part-) time jobs. Higgs knew Arran had helped their parents with the clearing of cupboards, so when the mention of a wall had happened, Higgs had volunteered to help. Then, Higgs had also volunteered Max to help, because he did not fancy building a whole fucking wall on his own.
It had been quite a nice activity, to build a wall with Max. Higgs had insisted that Terry a) stop encouragingly telling them what to do and b) just goes and does the garden instead. This had been a productive change since they'd managed to finish the wall between them just as the sun set. "I've made stew," Cassia informed them as Higgs squeezed against Max by the kitchen sink so he could wash his hands as well. "I assume you're staying," she added but was already fetching four plates from the cupboard, so Higgs didn't think they had a great deal of a choice in the matter.
"Thank you both for the help," Terry said, setting out the cutlery for them. "Beer?" He offered and Higgs nodded. Once they'd all been seated, Higgs smiled at his mum. "Smells lovely," he commented because it really did and Cassia smiled. "I think there might be too much spice in it, really," Cassia admitted before giving Max an apologetic look. "I have some cream if it's too hot," she promised, clearly only really caring about whether Max would deem her food not very nice.
