At least she wasn’t crowding right up close and personal to him, Harvey thankful for that one small mercy. He didn’t do up close and personal, something Silence seemed to understand – then again, he really didn’t do friendship or anything like that and she certainly hadn’t twigged to that little fact. That or she was in denial. Or he was in denial. Harvey was pretty sure there was a lot of Egypt visitation going on somewhere but it hurt his brain too much to try and untangle the mess his thoughts typically got into whenever Silence showed up.
He blinked a little as the parcel was waved in front of his nose, natural hesitation and fear of a trick preventing him from taking it automatically even as the world rushed around his ears and for a moment he thought he was drowning. Merry… Christmas? Harvey examined the parcel again, noticing the patterns that he could clearly see was handmade wrapping paper while all the while the sea – or maybe a river – continued to pound in his ears. Aside from something small from his sister, he’d not gotten any Christmas presents and indeed hadn’t expected them, not from his parents, not from his classmates and since he hadn’t any friends, not from them.
Harvey was coming to the conclusion that he liked things to be predictable. And that Silence was anything but; she was the very example of ‘expect the unexpected’. Slowly, he reached out and took the offered gift, sure that he was red in the face at the surprise and shock. “… thanks.”
