Esther begins to play tricks in the early morning; time stretching like nothing between her senses (one morning blends into two-three-four-) until she has been doing this trick for a week straight and by now most victims know to avoid it. The hellhound sits and waits inside the trash-bin (which she has emptied the night before) and smells the rank, gross stench of rot and waste. It isn't particularly hygienic, but there Esther sits and waits till someone comes by to prop open the lid and then-
BOO.
She pops her head out, tongue lolling out as she licks the innocent bystander who just wanted to use this bin to put their trash in. It isn't a welcome trick by all, some laugh and others give her a little shove so she goes back inside the can. Who can blame them? She probably smells the same by now. (A memo for Rhys: please give her a bath soon).
It is silent for a long while but then Esther's ears pick up the sound of heels getting louder (someone coming this way, someone coming this way- now now now now) her overexcited mind is ready to pounce. Perhaps she'll even pounce out this time even if they don't throw anything inside the bin. Maybe she should just jump out and lick whoever it was. (Hello, hi, hi, hey).
Marlene had spent some night at the Academy pouring over papers, old cases, tactics by previous VCU members and more. Some were related to her case, some was not. She was a hound for information when it came to her job, needing to know everything, to stay on top and excel. This also meant her mood had thinned to the point when one wrong move would trigger a less than pleasant snap.
Since knowing how much they were in danger, particularly loved ones that could not be helped, she trained frequently as well, throwing all she had at the stress that never seemed to go away entirely. She'd returned home very late at night and had crashed on the sofa, incurring sleep that was not the best.
It was with this unhealthy mood that she walked out to her trash bin, a bag in one very tight fist and a pair of sunglasses on her face to hide the dark circles. Using the tissue that was in her other hand, she reached for the lid to open it and be done with the chore.
Except that chore would not go as predicted, the moment her fingers enclosed on the lid, Esther shoved her doggy head out- licking Marlene's face without a second thought. She slobbered all over her cheek, the edge of the sunglasses and the collar of her shirt. Oops.
It didn't even register that she had licked the wrong person that morning and that she was about to pay for it. Severely.
No doubt the past couple of months had been hard on Esther. Marlene was the last person who'd make them easier. Even if she had singled out Ariana in ways, she'd still crack a whip over that faerie's head without hesitation. There was no such thing as mercy.
The trash bag fell from her hand the moment she felt the thick damp tongue swipe her across the face, an unexpected shriek slipping past her lips and she had already pulled her other hand back for the blow. It came swiftly, the aim almost general, to force back the so-called assailant. When the punch landed, the cracking sound was audible enough to satisfy but the feeling against her fist hadn't felt entirely right. Her other hand grasped at what was in the bin, to keep it from leaping out or going in. And recognizing what had slobbered on her (and also stank to high hell), there were no words for the withering glare she was offering the hellhound.
"If I killed you right now, who would miss you?"
Esther recoiled- or tried to, but she didn't get very far as Mar's fist cracked on her snout. There was a sickly sound, slush, slush, crack, snap and the hellhound gave a pained yelp. White starts exploded and clouded her vision, the pain being a little too much and clotting up her brain for a moment. Mar was saying something but the hellhound only half-heard her.
A pained bark and she discovered that breathing was suddenly very wet, uncomfortable and painful. Esther barked, yelped and barred her teeth in quick succession. Okay, so she had deserved a smack, but Marlene had broke. Her. Nose. If not her entire snout- ow, ow, ow.
There was some part of Marlene that wanted Esther to get aggressive, to even attack and give her a solid reason to lash out more. There was another part of Marlene that knew better to push the demon who was baring unfriendly teeth at her.
Let go. Step back and give her room, her brain encouraged and she obeyed with a grudge in her heart, loosening her grip and stepping back. She never took her eyes off Esther however. "Go to the fucking doctor. And take a bath. You stink."
Probably wise, because as friendly as Esther was she was still a thing that belonged in hell. And out of all the things lurking around in this world, she was one who had the least reason to be in this world helping out. Esther was not a tortured soul, but she sometimes forgot what she really was and got carried away and then confused and now-
-now she was glad for the space, because as soon as her brain began to function properly she shut her mouth, hiding her teeth once more. This sort of behaviour was not okay with her, she scampered out of the bin and landed on all fours. Ow, ow, ow, her nose.
Esther gave Marlene a look- a reproachful, puppy-eyed look before she gave a bark and turned to go. Yeah, she needed to go get her nose fixed. Then maybe she could talk Micah or someone to give her a bath.
Marlene would not stop her or offer any parting words. There was no regret in her for what she had done though she knew if consequences would come she would pay for them without a flinch. And once the hellhound was out of sight, she snatched up the trash to put away before going inside to wash up and return to the Academy.
