She’d never missed her birthday before. Ever. But this year was different because on her birthday two dead people were found and things at the Academy started getting chaotic. Everyone had to work more than usual to solve the crimes - Jasmine included. For days her mind was occupied with potential motives and reasons the killer could have had until the witch realized that she’d missed something. It took her another three days to figure out what she’d missed and was surprised that it was her birthday. When she was younger, the whole family had celebrated Jasmine’s, as well as Katherine’s, birthdays together but now...that wasn’t possible anymore. However, the witch figured it would be nice to have at least the remaining part of her family around and asked her sister to meet her in Tromso. It had been a rather spontaneous move and now that she was waiting for Katherine to arrive, Jasmine thought it had also been a very stupid move, but it couldn’t be changed. Her sister was already on her way and maybe they could talk like normal people for once. Seeing Katherine approach, Jasmine mustered a little smile and greeted her baby sister. “Hi,” she said. ~ Katherine was surprised that her sister had gotten in touch with her about her birthday. The girls still spoke to each other - they were family, after all, and despite the rift that had come between them, Katherine still cared. She felt a little guilty about forgetting Jasmine's birthday and for not getting her anything - even after being reminded and invited to meet her sister, she still hadn't gone out of her way to buy anything. It wasn't because she was feeling petty or that she didn't want to, but she no longer had any idea of what her sister might want or what she needed. She took the train to Tromsø early in the morning, giving herself enough time to look around and see if anything saw anything that would stand out to her. She paused in front of one of the magick shops, eyeing the necklaces that were on display at the window. They were crystal necklaces, lovingly cut and shaped into hearts - there was one that was broken in half, like BFF necklaces, that she briefly thought about purchasing. They'd had something similar when they were children, but Katherine had lost hers and Jasmine - well, Jasmine might have thrown hers away for all she knew. She left the shop and wandered about town, stopping for coffee and exchanging emails with her partner that she was going to meet up with later in the day. Soon, it was time to meet her sister. When she arrived at Circa, Jasmine was already waiting for her. Her sister spoke first and Katherine tried to match her smile, small as it was, but felt like it was too fake. "Hello," she said as she took her seat. "You haven't been waiting long, have you?" ~ It had been a rather spontaneous thought of Jasmine to invite her sister to celebrate her birthday, and the witch still wasn’t sure if it even was a good idea. After all, the sisters weren’t as close as they used to be in former times, but Jasmine had been feeling kind of lonely in the past couple of weeks and didn’t want to spend her birthday alone. Truth to be told, Jasmine didn’t have any idea of what her sister liked, either. Of course, they were still talking, but not about likes and dislikes – topics they used to talk about when they were younger. There wasn’t anything Jasmine wanted, anyway. Sure, she wanted her family to be together again, but this was as likely as world peace. Their grandmother had gotten her oldest granddaughter a scarf in several shades of purple, to „keep her warm in a cold country“ as she’d explained it in the card enclosed. Jasmine would have liked any present Katherine would have gotten her, but in the end, only her sister’s presence mattered to the witch and the – hopefully – nice time they’d have together. While Katherine was wandering about town, Jasmine ran some errands on her own. She wanted to buy the latest book of her favorite author and needed some other things for her apartment as well. The witch basically rushed through town to gather her things, which caused her to be way too early. As her sister arrived at the agreed time and greeted her, Jasmine replied: „No, absolutely not. I’ve been waiting for, like, five minutes. That’s cool.“ Well, the five minutes had been fifteen, but Katherine didn’t have to know that. „How are you, Katie?“ ~ Katie. Now there was an old nickname bursting through the surface! Katherine shrugged and glanced over the menu. "Fine, I guess." She answered. "Tired mostly. Too many cases, too little time and demons have this painful tendency to drag shit out way longer than they should. " There were dark circles under her eyes, something that Katherine had attempted to cover up with makeup but it hadn't quite worked out. She put her menu down and folded her hands on the table. "How about you? Anything exciting in the world of ghosts?" ~ Katie has always been the name Jasmine called her sister by. It made the cute little girl she had been years ago out of her sister again and Jasmine liked to think of Katherine as her innocent and sweet little baby sister. “Understandable. Things are crazy lately.” With a little bit of concern, Jasmine looked at her sister. She looked tired and the witch’s sisterly instincts told her to put her sister to bed. Katherine probably wouldn’t let that happen, though. Jasmine didn’t look in the pink, either. The murders made her work overtime and she barely had time to sleep. “The ghosts are as troubled as always. But the psychopathic killer worries me,” Jasmine said. “What kind of sick person kills and arranges them like this?” ~ Katherine sat back in her chair and bit her lip. Her sister wasn't looking too great, either. Though she imagined most of the employees weren't at their peak at the moment. Before Katherine could answer, a waiter came by and took the girls' orders - Katherine demanding that their drinks be brought out immediately. The waiter was back outside with their drinks and then gone again. She took a sip of her mojito - she wasn't on the clock yet - before responding. "Been trying to figure it out, actually. I don't buy that it's a demon. I know they haven't been ruled out, but they like their toys far too much to abuse them that way." She played with her straw, dipping it in and out of her drink and allowing the mint leaves to float around. "I was thinking angels, perhaps. They hate humans so much and all of the victims have been human." Her voice dropped lower. "I just hope we get this guy soon. Before he kills some more children." ~ Jasmine sat on the edge of her chair, back straight and seemed kind of tense. This meeting with her sister was awkward, but she was the one initiating it, after all, so she had to endure the awkwardness. She ordered a drink and watched quietly as her sister treated the waiter a little too harsh for the witch’s taste. “Well, if you say so. You oughta know a lot about demons, since you’re working in their crime department,” her sister replied. “I don’t think it’s a demon, either, but I’m not so sure about whether or not it was an Angel. Of course, they hate humans, but a lot of species do. We’re in the city with the highest supernatural rate ever, so everything is possible.” Jasmine finally took a sip of her own drink to let her sister think about what she’s sad and so that she didn’t seem as if she’d be a chatterbox. “I hope so, too. Of all the awful things I’ve witnessed, the child murder was one of the worst.” ~ "It was. They didn't do anything. They never even had the chance to ..." Her voice trailed off at that final thought. She waved a hand dismissively, not wanting to go down that particular route on her sister's birthday lunch. "It's true anything is possible and that many species hate Humans, but Angels hate them the most because they're Daddy's favorite or some shit." Unsure of what to say next, Katherine stayed silent, waiting for her sister's response. She'd expected the meeting to be awkward, yes, but during the silent moments it seemed unbearably so. ~ "Never even had a chance to what?" Jasmine asked. Her birthday lunch aside, the witch wanted to know what her sister was about to say. Besides, it was one of the only topics they could talk about without falling into awkward silence or touching memories of the past. "I doubt that. Not all the Angels hate humans because they're Daddy's favorite. There are vampires or faeries who hate humans even more. Everyone around here has a motive." As always, Jasmine tried to be the more objective one of the Owens sisters. Katherine wasn't the only one unsure of what to say next - her sister had the same problem. Jasmine cleared her throat and asked: "Have you heard anything from grandma?" ~ “I don’t want to talk about it anymore. Too grim. We have enough of that, don’t we?” Katherine responded, brushing over that part of the conversation for good hopefully. “No. The last time I spoke to her was last month. She was doing fine the last I heard.” She smiled a little. “She got another cat. Named him ‘Spook’.” ~ “You’re right,” Jasmine admitted with a quiet sigh. If her sister didn’t want to talk about something, it was almost impossible to get the information out of her, so the witch decided to leave it at that and not push Katherine any further. The news of her grandmother’s new cat made her smile a little, too. “What a cute name,” she replied and casually looked at her watch. Jasmine loved her sister, but every time they spent time together, everything felt so awkward. ~ “And so very our grandmother.” Katherine said, the smile still on her face. As much as her family disappointed her with their lack of hunger for revenge, she loved them dearly. The waiter came by and set their food down in front of them, asking if they needed anything else. He scurried away when the girls said ‘no’ and the awkwardness was temporarily lifted by the presence of their lunches and the subject of their grandmother. “Can you believe she asked about a boyfriend again?” Katherine started and for a while things seemed wonderfully, stupidly normal. |
