Rose loved being on a daylight schedule. She always had preferred the sun, but having been raised in a Moroi academy, she had always had to live on the Moroi schedule, save for the recent two years that she and Lissa had been on the run, but as soon as they were back on academy grounds, they were back on the academy schedule. The sun was just another sacrifice dhampirs had to make. One of the many, because as Rose and the other dhampirs had always been taught--they come first. They being the Moroi they protected. Like Lissa. Lissa came first.
Even at the risk of Rose's own happiness. Of course she wanted Lissa to be safe, she'd never forgive herself if she let something happen to her best friend. But Rose found that she loved someone, the one person she should never be with. Of course Lissa supported it wholeheartedly. She had never liked that Rose was always making sacrifices for her. Lissa was always so kindhearted and thinking of others. It was why Rose loved her so much. But the simple fact that Rose had to sacrifice Dimitri made the resentment sprout.
But here, Dimitri didn't care about the consequences--as wrong as Rose knew that was, and he had to know too--and Rose wasn't responsible. She hated being the responsible one. So when the decision was left to her, she had obviously chosen to be with Dimitri. She was happier now that they were together. Everything felt right. Even if it was wrong. Even if it could hurt more when they returned.
She really found that she didn't want to go back now. She'd wanted to at first, but for what? Lissa was here and while she wasn't fully trained, she could protect Lissa. Dimitri would help her. She and Dimitri could be together here. And there was sun. Glorious sun. She really liked it here.
But protecting Lissa meant that Rose had to keep training. Having lost two years and returning only to be pummeled by Mason, she realized how ill prepared she had really been to keep Lissa safe. She wasn't going to make that mistake again. She had been running along the beach for about half an hour now. She'd never liked when Dimitri made her run laps, but she realized the importance of it after actually fighting against Strigoi. Once again, the Russian god was right.
