Watching Lissa's expression and hearing her words, and seeing the expression of complete terror on Jesse's face, Rose knew what she had to do. She couldn't see what Jesse could see. Lissa was using super compulsion on him, making him see things that weren't really there. This wasn't like Lissa. She never got this angry over anything, but Rose could feel it through the bond. It was dark. Black. She knew that she had to take it from her. She concentrated on pulling the darkness from Lissa and through the bond, she could feel it fading, but physically, she could feel the darkness consuming her.
Without hesitating, she lunged at Jesse, knocking him to the ground and pounding on him with her fists. She was angry with him for the lies he had spread about her, she was angry with him for torturing Lissa and the other kids--but mostly Lissa. Jesse deserved whatever he had coming at her. But Rose wasn't thinking clearly, she wasn't seeing things clearly. As she had lunged at him, the scenery had changed. The target had changed. She'd flown over a desk to start beating on a man in a chair, but all Rose could see was Jesse, and that they were still outside.
Somewhere deep inside her, Rose knew that this wasn't her, either. She knew that it was the darkness she had taken from Lissa. She also knew how dangerous that could be, but it was better her than Lissa. They come first. It was always the moroi. The dhampirs were Guardians. They were expendable, as long as the moroi were kept safe. Rose could handle the darkness, and the consequences from it.
Dimitri had run into the clearing to see Rose lunging for Jesse and he dove for her. But instead of landing atop her in the grass, he landed with a thud on a carpeted floor. He glanced briefly around, confused, but not for long. Rose was attacking an innocent man, seated behind a desk. The man seemed to be gesturing for Dimitri to do something.
As confused as he was, he knew that Rose was not herself. He had seen her growing angrier lately, mostly right after Lissa had been, and then Lissa would be fine and Rose wouldn't. He knew something was going on with their bond. Pushing the thought from his head, he grabbed hold of Rose's legs, which were atop the desk, and pulled her toward him. She was angry, and she was strong, so it was a struggle.
"Rose!" he shouted when he couldn't get her to stop. He went around the desk quickly and pulled her into his arms as she continued to attack. He could take it. This man probably couldn't. "Rose, stop!"
Rose continued pounding on who she thought was Jesse. She someone grab her legs, but she didn't stop, she only kicked to make the person, whoever it was, let go, still pounding away, determined to pay Jesse back for all of the trouble he had caused for both herself and for Lissa. He deserved it, and so much more, and she was the better person to make him pay than Lissa.
She felt herself being pulled away, into strong arms, familiar arms. But she still didn't stop pounding. Now knowing that it wasn't Jesse she was fighting against, she still fought. She had to get away so that she could finish her job before Jesse got away from her. "Let me go!" she screamed, poundng relentlessly on Dimitri's chest. "He has to pay for hurting Lissa. I have to make him pay!"
Dimitri held even tighter while she struggled. "Rose, look. Open your eyes. It's not Jesse," he pleaded, his voice taking an urgent edge. He needed her to be herself once more, so they could figure out what was happening. The man was composing himself and moving as far away from them as possible. He had something in his hands, and was waving it at Dimitri, like he needed to take the papers and go. But Rose was too volatile for him to let go. He frowned at the man, his arms tightening around Rose.
Rose continued pounding against Dimitri, even as he spoke. "Let go of me!" she yelled again. Under normal circumstances, she would love to be in his arms like this, but it wasn't allowed. She'd fought him on it, tried so hard to convince him that they needed to be together, but she understood. And it hurt. They couldn't be together now or ever. Not if they were both going to be Lissa's guardians. That wasn't in the front of her mind right now, either. Nor was actually letting herself enjoy being held by him for a change. Payback was the only thing on her mind, it was the only thing she could see. "Let go!"
Dimitri held tighter as she squirmed more. He didn't know what to do - he felt close to crying. He needed her to get it together. "Rose, please," he said softly, very close to her ear. "Listen to my voice. Come back to me. You need to look past your anger." It was all he could do to keep from shaking her.
Dimitri's voice had a calming effect on her, but not enough. The room started to come into focus behind Dimtri, and she could tell that she wasn't on the grounds anymore. Where were they? "Where did you bring me?" she asked, struggling once again against Dimtri. She didn't recognize the room. It was like an office, but it wasn't Headmistress Kirova's office. "Where are me? I have to go back out there, I have to find Jesse before he hurts someone else."
"They'll take care of Jesse. You need to get control of yourself before I let you go," he said softly to her, hoping the strange man couldn't hear his part of the conversation at least. Rose wasn't making any efforts at being quiet - discretion had never been her best trait.
"Look, we need to figure out where we are and how we got here," he said in her ear.
Rose struggled against him one more time. The problem was, Dimitri was stronger than she was. She was improving under his teaching, of course, but he was still stronger. She silently cursed at him for not letting her go. For trying to make her gain control. She had one thing in mind and one thing only and he wouldn't even let her accomplish that. "I told you, I need to find Jesse," she said, ignoring the fact that he didn't know where they were. He had to know.
"Rose!" he snapped, his voice taking an edge. "Will you please look through your anger and see? Jesse isn't here. We aren't even at the Academy anymore." He was worried about their situation, but could do nothing about it until she was calmed down enough not to attack the man.
Dimitri's tone snapped her to attention. She had figured out that they weren't outside anymore and that Jesse wasn't there, but if they weren't at the Academy, where were they? She looked around again, and for the first time saw the man who was obviously keeping his distance. The anger still surged through her, her need to get back at Jesse. She needed to find a way to get back to him, but it was clear that if she mentioned Jesse, Dimitri wouldn't listen to her. "Fine," she said coldly. "Where are we then and how do we get back to the Academy?"
Dimitri loosened his grip, but only marginally, as he could feel the tension still vibrating in her. "I don't know, Rose. We just... appeared here," he said, unsure and a little lost. The strange man took a hesitant step forward and extended the papers toward them. Dimitri maneuvered Rose so he was still holding her, but took the papers. "Atlantis? What the..." he began, looking at the papers in a baffled manner.
Dimtri obviously still didn't trust her. She struggled against the slightly loosened grip he had on her, but it still wasn't enough. "Just let me go," she told him. "I'll stay right here." She still kept quiet about her remaining desires to clobber Jesse, knowing that wouldn't help her case any. "Just please let go." A part of her was tempted to kiss him. That would make him let her go, but it would also make him shut her out again and they needed to cooperate if they were going to get home. Hearing him mention Atlantis, she shook her head. "That's impossible," she said, hoping he could see that she was thinking--somewhat--clearly.
Dimitri sighed. "You better not run," he warned, then released her, giving her the papers that clearly had her name on them. "I don't get it," he admitted.
"Where am I going to run to?" Rose asked him seriously. "I don't even know where the hell we are!" She sighed, clearly annoyed. Of course Dimitri wouldn't trust her, but she needed his help if they were ever going to get back home. She took the papers from him, looking them over. "And they provide living arrangements? It seems we're expected to be here for a while." She was clearly not pleased, though a part of her wondered if she would be living close to Dimitri.
Dimitri sighed, looking at the man who had resumed his seat. "Can you tell us what this is about?" he asked, lifting his own papers and key. The man shook his head and directed his attention back to the papers on his desk. "Looks like we have to figure it out on our own," he said to Rose, gently grabbing her elbow and leading her out the office and into the breezy, ocean air outside.
"Great," Rose replied, not entirely thrilled that he had grabbed her elbow, but at least he was no longer restraining her. She could still feel the anger coursing through her, and she really, really wanted to do something about Jesse. She wondered if she ran now, if Dimitri would catch up to her. Of course he would. He might have had her running laps a lot during training, but he was stronger and faster than she was. "So where do we go?" she asked, glancing at the map.
He glanced down at his as well. He and Rose were in different rooms. He wouldn't be able to keep her safe - protect her from herself. Or protect others from her. He sighed, running a hand over his eyes. "I suppose we should go check out our rooms. I can take you to yours, then we can regroup," he offered.
Rose shrugged when he mentioned taking her to her room. Being alone with him wasn't a good idea right now, but maybe she could get into hers quickly and lock him out. That sounded like a fair compromise to her. "Alright then, that's where we will go." She looked at her housing assignment. "Then I guess we're looking for Mount Olympus." She located the apartments on the map and pointed to the right one.
Dimitri looked at the map as well. They were in the same building, a couple of floors apart, it seemed. The building wasn't far, and he took in the area with interest. This was very peculiar. He held the door open to the lobby once they arrived at the apartment building, allowing Rose to enter first. He didn't know what to say or do - he could feel the tension and anger coming from her in waves.
Rose walked in silence with Dimitri toward the building, when he opened the door, she stepped inside. "I can take it from here," she told him, heading toward the elevators. She figured the sooner they parted ways, the better. Even the two of them in an elevator could be bad enough. "Thank you for accompanying me, anyway." She silently hoped that he would let her go without him, but a part of her wanted him to stay. Damn feelings.
Dimitri smirked and jumped into the elevator before the doors could close. "You're not getting rid of me that easily," he said, crossing his arms over his chest, the papers crinkling in his balled up fist. He watched the numbers as they went shortly up.
Rose frowned at Dimitri when he turned up in the elevator. She was unamused. She pressed herself back against the wall furthest from him, trying to fight the urge to move closer to him. "You're making this a lot harder than it has to be," she told him. "I promise, I will go to my room like a good little girl." For now.
He shrugged, not saying anything. When the elevator doors opened, he stepped out and walked with her down the hall to her room. "I need to check it out," he said, waiting for her to open it.
Rose rolled her eyes when he said he needed to check out her apartment. She really didn't think that was necessary, she could handle herself perfectly fine. "Fine," she said as she slipped the key in the keyhold and opened the door. She only opened it enough to slip in, after pulling the key out, then she closed the door and locked it. She glanced down at the papers to see which bedroom was hers and walked away.
Dimitri pounded on the door for all he was worth, yelling her name. He was irritated. But what could he do? He had to let her cool down some. He sighed with frustration and headed to his own room.
Rose walked into her room and fell onto the bed with a sigh. As long as the anger surged through her, she was going to have to stay away from Dimitri of all people. It was taking a lot to fight her anger, to keep herself from attacking someone. It would lower her control in other aspects of her life, like being around someone she had very nearly slept with once before.
