He noticed her expression of surprise and wondered why she was being so cold toward him now. Had his actions not pleased her? Well, they should have. He had gone through enough trouble, and now he was being greeted with such distance from her. He released her hand and stepped back, getting angrier by the second.
"Accident?" he asked after she had explained. There had been an accident where Mary tended to him, but that had been ages ago. Mary was nothing to him now. Anne was his everything. And he and Anne had certainly kissed, but she would let him go no further until he had obtained his divorce. Was this some act to keep herself from him, still?
