When: After this
Where: Stefan's room
Rating: TBD
After Elena made her post early that morning, she hadn't bothered to check the network. She'd closed her laptop and curled up next to Stefan, the emotion sinking in and just crying over the loss of Damon. It was so strange that she felt the loss for Damon now. When they first turned up in Atlantis, she'd hated him. She'd been so sure that he had been the one out to kill her, but through everything that Katherine had done, Damon had been there... really been there for her. And now, he was gone. At least she had Stefan, finally had Stefan, but she missed Damon.
After hours of crying, Elena pulled herself away from Stefan and wiped her eyes before opening her laptop to check the network. After all, Meredith and Ric were out there somewhere, maybe they had replied to her post. She didn't see any replies, but she couldn't blame them. With the losses everyone was suffering, maybe they, too were avoiding people. She just hoped they were together wherever they were.
What she did see instead surprised her. Damon posted. Her eyes widened in shock as she typed her first response. A mix of emotions filling her. Happiness, nervousness, confusion. Tears were streaming down her face all over again, but she couldn't really classify what they were anymore. How was she going to tell him what had happened to her? What she was now? She just couldn't... not like this. She typed back and forth responses until he stopped answering, then she closed the laptop and crawled back to Stefan on the bed, the mixed emotions still coursing through her, stronger than she had ever felt anything before. She didn't know how to handle emotions as a vampire.
When he felt Elena's emotions shift from sadness, to happiness and confusion, he grew confused. He knew something was up, but he wasn't one to pry. And she seemed very intent on her conversation with... whoever she was conversing with. Maybe it was Meredith. He would ask her when she came back to him.
He had only been here a couple of days, and he had already been on a rollercoaster. Damon dying had been so unreal to him... he had just seen Damon at home. Things had been wrong. Then he got here, and they were on a mission. Elena had quickly explained this place and everything else. Then she was gone.
He shook himself out of his reverie as she climbed back over to join him. He wrapped his arms around her and held her close. "Are you ok?" he asked finally, unable to stop himself anymore.
Elena snuggled close to Stefan when he wrapped his arms back around her. Her head rested on the pillow next to his and her eyes closed. It felt incredible to finally have Stefan here with her. It felt like an eternity since the day he had proposed to her. The day she nearly died in the storm. Since she had last seen him. And now she had him back. If only his arrival hadn't been tainted with a kidnapped best friend, a vengeful vampire and the deaths of Damon and herself.
"I'm okay," she told him, moving her head only slightly so that her lips could graze his cheek. "I was talking to... Damon," she told him, sure that he wouldn't believe her. It was so unreal to her. She'd seen him die. She remembered the shock and pain that had gone through her when Katherine let him drop to the floor after draining his body. Though as a human then, it had been nothing compared to the emotions that had been running through her since waking up. "I know, it doesn't make sense, but he's back... somehow."
He blinked several times. At first, he thought she was talking about one of the other Damons... the ones who claimed to be Damon Salvatore, but were nothing like his brother. Well, ok, they were... they had the same general disposition. But they didn't look alike, and they were much younger, vampire-age-wise.
But when she said he was back, he looked down at her questioningly. He knew she was absolutely sincere, he could feel it. And it truly wasn't a total shocker that he came back if Elena did too. "How did he come back? Like you did?" he asked curiously.
Elena didn't know how Damon came back. Not entirely, just that someone had somehow been able to revive him. Since Damon had been drained, she knew that simply giving him blood wouldn't have worked, so she wasn't entirely sure what it was. "He was already a vampire," she pointed out. She knew full well that was how she came back as she had. She had already been in the process of turning even though Stefan had once told her she was safe. She knew now what had happened, but she was afraid to bring that part up to Stefan. She didn't want him to fight with Damon about her. Besides, that wasn't the point of conversation now.
"I'm not sure," she added. "He said that a weird guy in a trench coat somehow revived him." She didn't know more than that. She didn't know who the guy was or what power he had to revive people. Just that she was so glad that he had brought Damon back.
Stefan absorbed that fact silently, chewing it over. That was very interesting. Perhaps it was some sort of witch, able to bring people back with his power. He would have to speak to Damon about it, no matter what his brother felt for him.
He had been gazing into the middle space as he thought about that, then turned his gaze back down to Elena. "I am grateful for this mystery man, then," he said calmly. He wasn't entirely sure he was calm about it. He did get a bit jealous, but all he really wanted was Elena to be happy. Regardless of where she gained that happiness.
"You are?" Elena asked him. She knew that when she came from, Stefan didn't get along with Damon just like she hadn't. But then if Damon, Meredith and Ric were from her future maybe Stefan was as well. They hadn't really had a chance to talk about what had happened before each of them came here, and she wasn't really in the mood to discuss it now.
"I am too," she added. "He has been so great about keeping me safe from Katherine since being here and he only died because she wanted me and he wouldn't bring me to her." She frowned, burying her head in his shoulder. She was glad to see that the people who had died were coming back, but all of the pain was because of her.
Stefan nodded solemnly. "I am happy if you are happy, Elena," he said softly, kissing the top of her head. When she burrowed back into his shoulder, he frowned as well. "It's not your fault he died. Do you hear me?" he said sternly, not knowing where it was coming from, but not wanting her to blame herself either. "It isn't your fault that anyone did anything, or died, or got hurt. It's Katherine's insanity that did this. Not you."
Elena was happy. A part of her couldn't explain why she felt so strongly for Damon now. She had started to care about him as a friend and nearly brother-in-law. It was still that same caring, but like all of her own emotions, it was magnified. Her own feelings for Stefan had even magnified. She couldn't explain any of it. Hearing him talk about how it wasn't her fault, it was Katherine's, she pulled her head back so that she could look at him, her blue eyes searching his face. "But she wanted me dead. That was all she'd wanted since I've been here."
Stefan lifted his outside hand to cup her chin so he could hold her gaze. "Elena, explain to me how that's your fault. Did you force her to want you dead? No. Did you make her insane? No. You are just you. Nothing you have done has caused any of this," he said with passion.
Elena was pretty sure that Katherine only wanted her dead because she simply existed. Or more because Stefan had fallen in love with her. Was it a coincidence that the storm that nearly drowned Elena was the same day Stefan had proposed? "I could have gone to her when she first asked," she told Stefan. "Then she wouldn't have kidnapped Meredith and the other girls. There would have been no need for a rescue."
Stefan shook his head with determination. "Listen to me - it wouldn't have mattered what you did. Katherine most likely would have held you prisoner then drained your friends in front of you, to make you suffer," he said grimly. It was true... she was sick like that. It wouldn't have been enough just to have Elena.
Elena bit down on her lip. Maybe Stefan was right. He knew her better than she did. She was his sire. He'd been in love with her at one point. She immediately felt jealousy for Katherine, though she knew she didn't need to. It was her Stefan loved now. "I just wish people didn't have to suffer just because she's jealous," she said softly, her eyes falling on the ring Stefan had given her. Elena didn't know why Katherine hadn't taken the ring after killing her, but now she was grateful to have it.
His mouth set into a grim line, he nodded his head in agreement. "I know. She should have grown up a long time ago. And I am very sorry that she is still around... I'll fix that," he promised, his eyes blazing.
Elena sat up quickly, shaking her head when Stefan promised he would fix it. She knew what he meant and she couldn't let him. She wanted Katherine gone as much as he did, but she couldn't lose Stefan in the process. Not when they had just gotten each other back. "No, Stefan, please," Elena said desperately. "I can't let anyone else die. Especially you."
