Caroline pursed her lips together and glanced down at the sand before looking up at him again. "You've been really nice," she told him, "despite the way I've treated you. Hell, even despite everything at home." She knew she had been a bitch to him. While everyone else was telling her to give him a chance, she couldn't bring herself to do it. She had to assume the worst about him. "I think we can be friends," she told him. "I can't promise more, but we can see where it goes."
