It wasn't every day you found out that your two best mates were related through a sordid affair. Braden wasn't entirely sure what he was supposed to do in this situation. He was sure Jacob was having a complete meltdown in private right about now, especially with his distaste for the Flint family. Having their name tacked on to his probably wasn't exactly at the top of his list.

And Zara, of course, was having to deal with the fact that her father had an affair, which he knew couldn't have been easy on her, even if he didn't think she had the best relationship with her parents. If he ever found out his father had cheated on his mum, Braden didn't know what he would do, but he was sure it wouldn't have been pretty.

Scaling the steps to the owlery as fast as he could, Braden was a bit out of breath when he finally made it to her. "Hey," he panted, before stepping quickly over to envelop her in a tight hug. It was close contact for them, even with all their years of friendship, but Braden thought she needed it right then.

Zara was doing her best to just stay calm. She knew that Avalon was going to be dramatic about it. Tony was probably going to be dramatic about it. Ian was going to do merlin knew what, and Zara was just trying to stay calm. She'd sent her father an owl, but when Braden said he was coming to get her she nearly let go of her emotions...

She was a little bit shocked at how quickly he'd gotten there. She was happy for the hug. She wrapped her arms around him hiding her face against his shoulder. She wasn't even letting go. Normally Zara wasn't much for physical contact, but fuck it. Braden was one of her best mates, and she damn well needed a hug. She was scared, confused, worried... She muttered a "hi" but didn't move from hugging him.

With his arms still wrapped securely around her, Braden's head buzzed trying to come up with something to say. What would make everything okay for her? Nothing. There was nothing he could say to save her from the pain he knew she was in and the hurt that he knew was still yet to come from all the family drama.

"It's going to be alright," he assured her softly. "Everything's going to be fine, Zara."

Zara tilted her head just resting against his shoulder. She didn't care if it wasn't like her to stand and hug anyone like that, at the moment it was the only thing keeping her from falling apart. "Avalon's being terrible, Tony is being rational, but I don't have a clue how to make anyone feel better. This isn't exactly what I wanted to see." She said softly.

"I don't know what to do." Zara hated not knowing what to do, or showing weakness, but at least she knew Braden wouldn't use it against her.

	Braden sighed quietly. "Zara, you don't have to make everyone feel better. That's not your job, love." Leave it to Zara to worry about everyone else when her world had been turned upside down. "Can you imagine what Jacob is going through? Avalon is being a complete spolid brat about it, and Tony is, I have no idea. He's dating Piper Wood, I have not a clue how either are taking it. I've got to help them if I can." She said quickly. She could feel her body shaking slightly. Why couldn't she hold it together better, she couldn't even think straight she was shaking so badly.

"Jacob's tougher than he looks," Braden told her. In truth, he didn't know how accurate that was, but he wasn't about to let her know that. "I'll go talk to him later. Don't worry about him."

Braden's heart cracked as he felt her tremble in his arms. "Zara," he pulled back just slightly so that he could get a good look at her. "Look at me." His hands gently slid up to cup her face as he looked earnestly down at her. "Avalon will be fine. Tony will be fine. Piper and Jacob will be fine." Keeping composure wasn't easy when someone you cared so much about was completely breaking down, but Braden wasn't about to waver for her now. If Zara couldn't be strong, he would be strong for her. "I promise. Everything will be okay."

"Our families are broken." She muttered softly looking at him. Zara hated emotions, she hated showing them, dealing with them, thinking about them. She let her head rest against his chest as she felt a few tears fall.

"I don't know if it will be. Avalon will go with Mum so will Ian. I don't know where Tony will go. I'll go with Dad. I never thought I'd have to think about these things."

Oh, bloody hell. Braden could not stand girls crying. It was something that got under a bloke's skin! And for Zara, who was so careful about revealing her emotions, to let a few tears fall was even worse. "Zara, don't cry," he whispered weakly. "Please don't cry." What was he supposed to say? 'You can still see them on weekends?'

"They're still your family. They're just... things will change some." Some was, perhaps, an understatement.

	"I'm sorry." She whispered softly. She couldn't stop the tairs, she was just broken slightly. Mostly because she knew the second she left Braden she'd have to go back to bing calm, rational, and put together. This was her only change to really deal with her emotions and it was scary for her. "Don't apologize," he exclaimed. "You've got nothing to be sorry for. Don't be sorry."

The thought of feeling unloved by his parents was a scary one for Braden. He knew Zara and her mother did not have a stable relationship, if they even had one at all, and he knew how much it bothered her. "Zara, your mother loves you," he said, frowning slightly as he gently rubbed her back. Honestly, he wanted to track down her parents and beat them into a pulp for the way they treated her, but he doubted that would help anything. Well, maybe he'd feel a little better after.

She tried to stop the tears but she just couldn't. It was probably the first time in years that she'd actually cried. Zara didn't cry, she kept herself together, she thought of how her actions would hurt or help others. She never let her emotions get carried away.... But now she was hugging Braden crying, and she couldn't get herself to stop. She couldn't hold back the feelings and fears she'd had most of her life.

"No she doesn't, she never has. She never wanted me. She wanted me to be a boy, and I wasn't so I was just wasted space. that's all I've ever been to her." She had a hard time saying it as she was crying, but it oddly felt good to cry. Even if she did feel bad about making Braden put up with it, she shouldn't do that to him, or anyone.

Braden didn't know if what he was saying was true, but he honestly didn't care. He would say most anything to get Zara to stop crying. "That's not true," he whispered. "She may not be the best at showing it, but she does love you, Zara. You're her daughter."

Hesitating for a moment, he added softly, "I know things are messed up right now, and I know there's nothing I can do to fix that. But I do know that things will be better soon. Everything will be okay."

She sighed slightly. "I know you want to believe that, but she doesn't love me or care about me. But that's okay. I'm just worried about Tony, Avalon and Ian. Avalon isn't handling this well, she's falling apart." She said shutting her eyes. She didn't move from leaning against him. He tears started to slow and she smiled slightly.

"Thank you." She whispered shutting her eyes. Zara knew she should move, but she knew she shouldn't stay against him, but it was the only thing keeping her a bit more comfortable.

Braden resisted the urge to scoff at the mention of Avalon. The girl was completely ridiculous, lost in her own fantasy world where she rules over everyone and everything. It was a miracle Zara had managed to stay so genuine next to such a sister. "Hey, I know Avalon. She'll be fine. And Tony, Tony will be okay, too. You just have to give them both some time to straighten things out."

It was an amazing feeling, holding her in his arms like this. He knew it didn't mean anything, especially not what he would have liked it to, but it was a good feeling to know he could take care of her, that she would let him take care of her, trusted him to take care of her. "Want me to take you somewhere?" he offered gently. "Back to your dorms, maybe? If we stay in here much longer, we'll smell like owl all day." He managed a small chuckle at his weak attempt at humor.

Zara sighed. "That doesn't mean I'll be able to stop worrying about either of them." She said softly. She knew perfectly well her sister was an idiot for the way she acted, Zara was actually glad she didn't get the same attention her sister had.

"Somewhere out of here is good, I don't know where." She said. She let one arm move away from him, but she merely turned her left arm still wrapped around him, her head still rested against him. She needed the support and at least she knew he'd never hurt her.
