The real reason he was no longer in the running was because her mother had decided Athena needed a husband who was older and would already be settled by the time she was out of school. This made Evan apparently far too young for her, since all the choices currently were all in their mid-20's. Athena figured it was just a phase and her mother would change her idea of who Athena should marry, but Evan didn't ask so Athena didn't tell.

"Not in the least bit," she admitted honestly. She didn't see the point of small talk, and thought it better left to women who weren't smart enough to make something of themselves. "But my etiquette tutor always taught me it was polite to inquire after your host's life." The small talk was over and Athena decided to change the subject by kissing him.
