Who: Kendra Urquhart, Dante Macmillian, and Phoenix Malfoy
What: Awkwardness, tension and what follows
When: January 13
Where: By the lake
Rating: TBD

Alright, so technically he hadn't said anything to her on her birthday. But she couldn't really be upset about it, right? He hadn't technically known it was her birthday because he really didn't know her all that well. And, okay, yes, she had written about it in her journal, but he probably just hadn't wanted it to seem like he was only saying it because she had brought it up. He was thoughtful like that, right? It wasn't like he'd just... ignored it or anything... right?

After discovering that her usual haven, the greenhouse, was currently occupied, Kendra had gone out to the lake for some alone time. Her peace of mind, however, seemed to be constantly interrupted by thoughts of a certain bleach blonde, ridiculously attractive Slytherin boy. She had worn his headband that day, as it matched conviently with Hogwarts uniforms, and it was still resting daintly in her blonde waves as she walked along the shore.

"This is crazy," she groaned, staring out over the water's surface. "What am I do-" But before she could finish that question, Kendra, in typical graceful Urquhart fashion, had gotten her foot caught on something. With a small squeak of surprise, Kendra's hands shot out in front of her to brace herself for the rocky landing, only to land in a rather awkwardly shaped patch of grass. Blinking, she opened her eyes to realize it was not, in fact, a patch of grass that had saved her from knee scrapings, but one Dante Macmillian, her arms on either side of his chest. Instantly, her cheeks turned a bright shade of crimson as she stared, horrified, at her ex-boyfriend. "I...fell."

It was safe to say that Dante Macmillan had the most shutty birthday and holiday break of his seventeen years alive. His best friend, Roger, had caught him snogging his sister in the even of his birthday and went apeshit on him. So he left. He hadn't talked to any living human being since, except for his little sister, Paris. The little darline was probably the only one that's keeping him sane.

A late afternoon by the lake seemed to be in order. Dante had skipped his last class and spent his afternoon staring up at the shfting sky. It looked like it will be raining that night. By dismissal time, he'd gotten out a book and started reading, and a little later, as he was resting his eyes, the book laid on his face, something... or rather someone accidentally fell on his chest. Reaching up, he took the book off his face and found himself staring at the mortified expression of his ex, Kendra. "It's the HB badge isn't it?" he asked, not moving to either help her or move away from her. He even folded his arms behind his head. "People just can't seem to resist it..."

Okay, so Dante wasn't exactly helping with the level of embarrassment of the situation. She should have expected such a response, really, knowing him, but it still caught her off guard and sent her cheeks into a brighter blush than before. "Whatever," she mumbled, quickly backing her hands up so that she could sit up instead of having to lay atop him awkwardly. Technically, she doubted the head boy badge was the real sinker. It was more like the smarts and the attitude that got him girls, and, well, yanno, the smokin' hot bod didn't exactly hurt either.

"What are you doing out here anyway?" she asked, moving to fix her headband only to find that it was gone. Eyes wide, she looked around for it quickly, before spotting it inches away. It had obviously fallen off her head when she'd tripped. "...Will you hand me that?" she asked weakly, pointing the band just out of reach.

A rather smug smirk crossed Dante's fatures as he watched Kendra flush in embarrassment at his response. He could never get tired of that. And as he watched her get up and off of him that he'd rather missed those blushing cheeks.

"Lying on the ground." he answered he in a bored tone. Then Kendra started to look around for something, something she must have dropped when she fell on him. Looking at the direction she'd pointed, Dante found a rather expensive looking headband by his side. He plucked it from the patch of tall grass and inspected it, turning it in his fingers before his eyes. "Shiny. This new?" Dante asked. He's never seen her use this before.

He may have missed her blush, but she hadn't missed that look, that arrogant smirk of his that made her feel so silly. She had always much preferred his smile. "Sounds like a good time," she replied sarcastically.

As he inspected the headband, Kendra hesitated. She wasn't exactly keen on telling him about Phoenix and what may or may not have begun to transpire between them. For one thing, she was still entirely confused about what they were anyway, and for another, it was Dante. He was her ex-boyfriend, and it was an awkward discussion to have with someone of that title. "It was a Christmas gift," she replied uneasily, holding out her hand. "Can I have it back now, please?"

"Not really." Dante replied in the same tone. "In fact it's been rather boring. I'm not too inclined to move back to the Castle though. Even though it's oh so amazingly awesome in there..." He fought to keep his eyes from rolling or for his tone not to regster his bitterness, but they did anyway.

"Huh." Dante said. The band looked rather expensive. "A generous one, I have to say." His eyes then averted to her, searching, questioning. "Now, who's the bloke who'd give you such a nice gift?"

Kendra eyed him. It wasn't like him to be so whiny. It was then that she remembered what might have put him in such a bad mood. At Roger's party, she had heard the commotion, and word had spread like wild fire about the incident with Ashley Davies. Dante had snogged his best mate's sister, and Roger hadn't been happy about it. Clearly, he and Roger had yet to make up. "Is your plan just to avoid him forever?" she asked, brow raised. "I don't think that's going to work very well for you."

"That's none of your business. Just give it back, will you?" And the second the words had come out of her mouth, she wished they hadn't. It was probably only going to entice further questioning.

Dante expression hardened at that question. "So we're talking about my feelings now?" he asked, eyes looking back up at the sky, the bright blues and whites reflected in his eyes. "I don't see why it's any of your business. It's not like we've been the best of chums in the past months, Kendra." he reminded her.

"Defensive are we?" he asked, suspicious now as he moved the headband further away from her reach. "What's so bad about your secret lover that you have chosen to hide his identity?"

She let out a sigh as he got defensive, as per usual. He was such a typical male, afraid of letting anyone see that he was hurt. It was always the muscular, masculine ones that were the biggest babies underneath, she found. "That isn't exactly my fault, is it, Dante?" she replied calmly, though the thought wasn't exactly a pleasant one and it left a weak feeling in her chest to talk about it.

"Who says it's even a bloke?" she snapped, reaching over him toward the headband as he pulled it away. "Give it back, Dante."

"Maybe." Danted said with a shrug, a long sigh escaping his lips. In truth, he wasn't too keen on discussing how much of a douchebag she thought he was. He's already aware of that. "How about a change of topic, hm? I'd appreaciate it if you decided you want to talk about plants now..."

"Touchy." He laughed a little, raising it just a bit higher. "See, that tone, my dear has confirmed it IS a bloke. But fine, I'll give you the benefit of a doubt. It's a lady friend of yours. Who is it?"

"You hate it when I talk about plants," she muttered, crossing her arms over her chest. He was, quite frankly, a douchebag, and she didn't have a problem with telling him so. He'd let her fall in love with him and then had dropped her like a hot potato the second he realized it. At least the shagging had been marvelous while it lasted. "He's your best friend, Dante. Just apologize. He'll forgive you."

Her eyes narrowed at his laugh, and she reached again for the headband, to no avail. "It's from Phoenix Malfoy if you must know! Now will you quit being such an arse and give it back?!"

"Hate is such a strong word. And I can only hate so many things..." Dante said with a shrug, getting himself more comfortble. One would think he's on a plush mattress by the way he seemed entirely relaxed in his position. He knes he's done a lot of things in the past he's definitely not proud of. Dodging girls because of his phobia to commit was one of them, and Kendra happened to have been an unfortunate victim of that. It wasn't like he never cared for her- he did. It was probably why he can't seem to look at her stright in the eye when he spoke of it.

At her patronizing tone, Dante gave off a laugh, one that was obviously not of genuine amusement. "I don't see why we should discuss my life, when you're so keen on keeping yours a secret."

Although it appeared it wasn't a secret for long and Kendra had announced her mystery gift-giver's name. "A Malfoy?" One would think he'd said 'A twelve foot troll' with the tone he used. He tossed the headband back to her. "What the hell, Kendra? You're consorting with that lot now?"

Kendra had been expecting a not so pleasant reaction when she told him exactly who the headband had been from, but the way he spat his name out like venom made her stomach give an unpleasant flip as her hands clenched together in both anger and nervousness. "I'll consort with whoever I please, Dante," she snapped, reaching to carefully replace the headband in her hair. "And I hardly think you have the right to patronize me about anything after trying to get into your best friend's sister's knickers. Even for you, Dante, that's an all-time low."

Dante didn't like that tone. He didn't need to hear that tone. Not from her, not from anyone. And as he watched her put her headband back on, something within him snapped at her cutting tone. "What's it to you?" he said, sitting up finally, his piercing gaze not leaving her. "What's it to you who I see, who I snog, who I shag? You've ceased having the right to care about my business when I broke up with you, so could you kindly just fuck off? I would think the whole being alone in the middle of nowhere would send the message that I wanted to be alone..." he said rather harshly coming in face to face with her. He didn't mean to sound like such an arse, but he had not had the best past days...

That had hurt, and it registered on her face, before she quickly ducked her head to look away, sucking in an almost shaky breath. She did care about Dante. Even if she didn't want to, Kendra had been in love with him, and though she no longer wanted to date him, it was hard not to be concerned about him or want the best for him (at least at times when she didn't want to strangle him).

By the time she looked up, she looked less vulnerable, though it was still obvious that she was upset. It was her typical 'upset but hiding it' face, which, as per usual, was rather transparent. "You're the one who was prodding me about my love life, Dante," she muttered, rising to her feet. It made her feel better, being on a higher level than him. "And it's not as if I sought you out. Contrary to what your ego might lead you to think, I don't spend my days chasing after you. I was just trying to help, but you just..." She laughed weakly. "I don't know why I bother. You didn't care what I had to say when we dated, so why should you care now, right?"

"I wasn't prodding. I was just asking. You're the one who's ashamed of who you're seeing." Dante retorted, his voice a lot harsher than he intended. He was just so... angry, and Kendra had been unlucky enough to get in his way. He stood as she did, easily towering over her. "If you weren't you wouldn't have had the slightest hesitation in admitting it, now would you? What are you afraid of, Kendra? That he's ashamed of you as you are of him?"

It was in this exact instance that Phoenix Malfoy emerged into their view, his demeanor calm and collected with his hands tucked inside his robe pockets and his bag swung over his shoulder. He took in the scene before them with an expression that was quite unreable, not revealing just how uch he was able to hear in the loud conversation. But even though it was obvious to him that he in the wrong place at a very wrong time, he couldn't seem to walk away.

"I'm not ashamed of him!" she exclaimed She hated how tall he was, looming over her like that. "He's thoughtful and intelligent and charming and twice the man you'll ever be!" She reached out to shove his chest fruitlessly. "You're such an arse! Why are you so intent on making me miserable?"

It was after she'd pushed him that she noticed Dante's eyes had locked on something, and with a frown, she looked over her shoulder to see what had caught his attention. Part of her had assumed another girl had so easily distracted him, but she was surprised to find quite the opposite standing there, hands in his pockets with an expression that gave nothing away. "Phoenix..." His name came out breathlessly, eyes widening with horror. How long had he been there? How much had he heard?

Dante had been aware of the other presence behind Kendra since he'd began approaching them, his ears having caught the sound of leaves crushing under the weight of the other man's boots. He didn't stop Kendra from speaking, but after she did, he smiled at her menacingly. "It wasn't intent on doing it. Just comes out naturally, I guess."

"Is there a problem here?" Phoenix finally spoke up, his crisp tenor tone echoing in the air between the three of them. Dark gray eyes locked with Dante's.

Dante, in turn, turned his head in the slightest to the side to look at the Malfoy. "No." he told him, before looking at Kendra. "In fact, I think I'm done here." With that, he took his things and started to walk away. Just as he passed Phoenix, he whispered: "She's all yours."

Phoenix watched the other man go, a bit agitated for reasons he won't get himself to acknowledge. He turned to Kendra then and slowly approached her. He noticed immediately that her hair was adorned with the band that he'd given her during the holidays. Reaching up both of his gloved hands, he gently fixed it for her, combing his fingers through her golden locks. "Don't let him get to you." he said, eyes avoiding hers. "He is a complete waste of space."

Kendra didn't turn when she heard Phoenix voice, however grateful she may have been for it. She didn't watch Dante go as he brushed past her. She didn't want to look at either one at the moment as she knew she looked just like she felt- as if she'd been slapped in the face.

But soon Phoenix was in front of her, and she stood painfully still as he carefully adjusted the headband he had given her. He wasn't looking at her, but his touch was gentle and in that moment she felt pathetically open and vulnerable as she looked up at him. It was this vulnerability, no doubt, that led her to move forward, to duck her head down and wrap her arms around his slim torso. She slammed her eyes shut, trying desperately to will tears back to no avail, as they slid down her cheek and onto his expensive jacket.

Phoenix froze when Kendra slid her arms around his waist and pulled herself to him, crying silently as buried her face on his chest. For a second, Phoenix couldn't even breathe, uncertainty and the sudden panic this sudden contact brought leaving him immobile. His hands were raised as if any other contact with her will burn him, his eyes looking down at the other's blond head. Phoenix was never the sort who responded well to physical contact, especially if it was one that he didn't initiate. Has she not caught on that he wasn't... that sort of fellow?

But even amidst his silent struggles, Phoenix didn't pull away from her. After finally allowing himself to breathe, he laid one of his hands on her head, and the other left on his side. "Did he hurt you?" He meant physically, of course. It seemed appropriate to ask.

She felt him tense as she hugged him, stiff as a board in her arms. He did not touch her, but kept even his hands from her. There was a tightening in her chest as it crossed her mind that Dante was right, that he was ashamed of her, that maybe she had been right in thinking that he wasn't actually interested. He hadn't said Happy Birthday, hadn't acknoweldged it, even.

She wanted to pull away, just to run for the hills, but as she was about to move, she felt his hand in her hair, and she let out a shaky breath as her grip tightened slightly. "No," she mumbled.

The single syllable left hi at ease then, though Phoenix still found hiself struggling to surrender to the embrace. One could say he wasn't quite familiar with the mechanics of the gesture. Should one wrap his hands around the waist? The shoulder? He was almost afraid to move in fear of doing it wrong.

So he just chose to keep still, leaving his hands where he'd first laid them, fingers tangling in her golden hair. "It's him, isn't it?" he asked. "The one that broke your heart..."

At his question, Kendra nodded slowly into his chest. She wished he would take her in his arms, pull her close, hug her tight, but this was Phoenix she was talking about. The first time she had touched him (when she had been trying to carry him away from prefect after managing to drop a book on his head) he had flinched away. She knew she was pushing things as it was. "You weren't supposed to hear all that," she whispered, not daring to look him in the face as she sniffled softly.

Phoenix felt bad to have heard what little he had. It was a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However he couldn't quite explain the strange eleation he felt when he heard him defending his honor. She didn't need to, but she did.

Since when did she become part of the few who did that for him?

"Then consider it all forgotten." Phoenix decided, hoping it would make her less upset. Absently, he stroked her soft hair with careful fingers as he thought. "Do you wish to head back?" he asked, his usual flat tone holding a hint of concern. "It's getting quite cold..."

Kendra was a loyal person. It was probably the reason she'd been stuck into the Hufflepuff house in the first place. She didn't put up with people talking bad about her friends, and, well, he may not exactly have been just a friend to her, but Phoenix was no exception. He'd been worthy of her defense from the moment he offered to walk her home even after she'd crushed his poor head with a book.

"You can't just... forget everything we said. It doesn't work that way."

Phoenix reminded her of just how cold it was outside. It was easy to get warm when you were in the mdist of a heated fight with your ex-boyfriend after being embarrassed enough as it was for falling into his lap to begin with. And, well, hugging Phoenix didn't exactly give her chills, either. She carefully pulled back from him with a small nod, wiping the stubborn tears from her eyes as she offered a sheepish smile. "Yeah. That'd be nice."

"You could believe it so, so it will be easier on you. After all sometimes when we lie to ourselves, it is for own good." Phoenix allowed her to pull away, noticing immediately the damp cheeks. Grasping one of her wrists and stopping her, she turned the hand palm up, reached into his pocket and placed a remarkably pressed handkerchief on her hand. She closed her fingers around the fabric. "I'd be willing to play along if it's needed." he said, before releasing her, his hands retreating inside his pockets. "It's up to you."

After, Phoenix gestures his hand out to his side. "After you."

Kendra jolted as he caught her wrist, for a split second considering he might actually want to hold her hand. That brief glimmer of hope disappeared quickly as he handed her a neatly folded handkerchief, which still earned a small smile from her. "Thank you." Even if it wasn't what she'd let herself hope for, his fingers still left a tingling sensation where they had closed around her hand. "You don't have to play an act. We can just... talk about something else."

Kendra laughed weakly at his question. "I was hoping you had a brilliant idea stashed up your sleeve. I'm not... thinking so straight right now." She didn't understand why Dante had been so horrible. They had fought when they had dated, but it was never so intense, probably because it was awfully hard to fight about your love life when it consisted of each other.

Phoenix nodded once in understanding. She did appear quite shaken up by her recent confrontation with someone from her past. Someone she still cared or quite a lot despite his ghastly behavior towards her. That was something he himself didn't quite get.

"I apologize if I don't." he said, looking away. "Would you wish to head to the kitchens? A glass of hot cocoa might make your mood lighter."

Kendra was silently elated that Phoenix wanted to spend more time with her than simply walking her back to the common room to ensure she made it back safely. "Cocoa sounds amazing, actually," she agreed, smile widening slightly.
