WHO. Jessica Vaisey and Hugo Weasley
WHAT. A strange encounter?
WHERE. By the Lake
WHEN. Later afternoon, after classes
STATUS. Complete / Closed
RATING. G

Jessica left that Castle that late afternoon after her classes. Dressed in warm robes of black, silver and green she braved the cool outside weather to seek solitude in the outskirts of the forrests that lines the area around the Great Lake. Most people tended to avoid that area, but in her years, she has found that those places were the best spots to retreat to when one desired silence and solitude.

Not even a minute after leaving the castle walls, she could feel the sniffles coming, her weak body responding to the sudden temperature decline as expected. But even so, she's noticed that her trips to these places had become more frequent in the recent days. Since Halloween, nothing much in her life had been the same...

A sound to her right made her stop and turn. Was someone there?

Hugo had ventured outside that day to do some studying. As much as he loved his cousin Lily... he just needed a break from her today. And from Dwight. From everyone...

Ever since Lily had taken upon herself to find him a girlfriend, everyone was teasing him. He knew it was just friendly attention, but it was hard for him to get any work done with it. And it was embarrassing too. He just... couldn't talk to girls. And if he actually knew of one that liked him that way... well he'd never get the courage enough to talk to her.

So he was out at the lake working on his Arithmancy homework, sitting on the driest rock he could find. But that's when he heard someone walking by. His foot scrapped against the rock onto the ground and he looked up.

It was a girl. A Slytherin girl... one from his year, because he remember seeing her from class. He just gave a nervous smile and waved to her a bit. She probably wouldn't even pay attention to him. Most Slytherins didn't like him, just because he was a Weasley.

Jessica's dark brows drew together when he saw the boy sitting on one of the dry rocks. Judging from the colors of his robes, he was a Ravenclaw. Could he be from her year? Then quite unexpectedly, he waved at her, even though she did not know him at all. Now wasn't that the nicest thing?

Jessica would perhaps never know what made her do it, but she found herself walking towards the boy and taking the space beside him on a smaller rock. She folded her hands on her lap as she looked up at him. "A Ravenclaw doing homework?" she asked, with a small smile. "Now, that's something you don't see everyday."

Hugo had just been friendly when he waved. He absolutely didn't expect her to come over and sit by him. Oh no, was he just inviting more trouble into his life? Maybe his waving was seen as some sign of provoking trouble? That would have been his immediate answer if it had been Athena Malfoy. She just... acted strangely around him sometimes.

But he blushed and looked down at his notes when the Slytherin girl came to sit next to him on the rock. She was smiling... she seemed nice enough. Even if she was being sarcastic. "Well... maybe not outside," he said as a reply, and scribbled down another answer in his notes. Merlin, he was going to have to check this all again later to see if this was right.

There was something about this boy that left Jessica intrigued. It could be because he looked at her as if she was a carrier of mad cow disease, or because he couldn't quite seem to meet her eyes. He was a nervous thing, she noticed and she had to wonder if he was like this all the time.

Calm. Jessica felt strangely calm as she sat beside the Ravenclaw. "I suppose." she said. Sighing, she took a cigarette pack from her pocket and lit it with her wand. She's developed the habit lately, and it seemed an effective stress reliever from everything that's been happening to her. Taking the fag between her fingers, she took a drag before looking at the boy beside her. She reached the pack out to him in offering...

Well even though Hugo obviously seemed nervous around her, the girl didn't want to leave and she just... sat there. He looked up though when he saw her take out a cigarette and lit it up. She really... really didn't look like the type to smoke. It seemed strange for Hugo.

"No... no thank you," he said shaking his head when she offered him one. "I don't smoke... it's not good for you," he said before he could think about how... preachy that sounded. "And I don't think it's allowed on Hogwarts grounds... either."

Jessica's mouth stretched into a small smile when he said smoking was bad. That was the point. she thought masochistically, before she actually saw the Prefect Badge pinned on his chest. Curious, her eyes rose to seek his. "I know." she said softly before her eyes casted down on her lap. she took another drag. "Do you think the person who invented cigarettes knew that before making them?" she wondered out loud.

He didn't think she was would stop after his advice, because well... everyone knew that smoking was bad for you these days. He didn't exactly show that much authority either for a prefect... "Well... no. I don't think so," Hugo said when she asked about cigarettes being invented. "Initially smoking was for religious rights, in ancient cultures. In Central America specifically," he explained. "It was the Spanish that brought the tobacco back to Europe that it became recreational.. But it wasn't till the 1800s that they were called cigarettes in France and the French State received a monopoly on manufacturing cigarettes. The bad health affects didn't become widely known till the second half of the 20th century," Hugo said and then stopped, blushed and looked away. He probably shouldn't have said all that. "I researched it, when I was trying to convince some of my cousins... not to smoke."

Lips parted to an O when the other boy started on a lecture about the History of cigarettes. Jessica was surprised that he had actually gone there, and her shock reflected on her expression.

Her mouth stretched into a grin however when he stopped, blushed and looked away, catching himself. He was definitely nothing like most of the men she knew in her life, and his presence, she found was startlingly refreshing. If at first, she sought solitude she found comfort in the presence of someone she barely knew. "Did your plan work?" she asked. "Did your cousins stop smoking after you told them all that?"

"Well... that's just what I learned. I didn't tell them all that. I told them about the harmful affects," Hugo said looking back at her. He saw that shocked look on her face. He got that a lot... for the random things he knew. It was weird. When his Mum said things like that, they just knew she was smart. When Hugo said it, he got strange looks.

"And... it didn't really work. My cousins doesn't usually listen to me," he said with a sigh. No one ever listened to him, and he wasn't assertive enough to push his point forward.

Jessica frowned in the slightest at the other's revelation. He didn't seem like the assertive sort, but it made her sad to hear that he thought no one listened to him. "Well, in that case." Leaning forward, she reached her hand out and extinguished the fag on a small rock by their fit, putting it out. Smoke rose to her fingers, dancing and licking at her skin before they disappeared completely. After, she left the cigarette butt on the ground and burried it under rocks and earth with her boot. "Then let me be the first one you've stopped smoking with that speech." she said, smiling brightly up at him. "And see, you haven't gotten to the bad parts yet either..."

Hugo was surprised when he watched her put out her cigarette and bury the butt on the ground. He didn't know if she'd really stop for good, or she was just trying to humour him... either option was possible, but he smiled at her anyway. She was trying to make him feel better than he could convince someone to do something. "Well... thanks," he said with a laugh. Though trying to convince someone to stop smoking wasn't really for his benefit... it seemed to turn into that. "We're in some of the same classes... aren't we?" he asked. Charms, Potions and Transfiguration he thought.

"There it is." Jessica found herself saying. There was the smile she had been waiting for. Why she had been waiting for it exactly was something she wasn't entirely sure of, but seeing it surely was a welcome sight. "You just seem so... serious. It's nice to see you laugh." she said with good humor. At his question, she paused for thought. Come to think of it, he did look sort of familiar, only she hadn't really interacted with him at all before. "Yes, I think." she nodded, then her expression turned rather apologetic. "Though I'm not exactly sure where, I'm sorry. I've been mostly distracted of late." Jess drew her sweater tighter around herself, sighing. "I'm pretty sure we have Potions. Am I right?"

That took him by surprised that she had been waiting for him to smile and laugh. He was pretty serious most of the time. Or just... was too nervous to talk so he just didn't say anything. "Thanks," he said giving a small smile when she talked about his laugh. He shook his head when she was apologizing. He didn't mean for her to feel bad. "No it's alright, I understand. It's not like we're in the same house or anything," Hugo said shrugging to offer that as an explanation. Just because his parents were famous, didn't mean he had to be remembered easily. "Yeah Potions. Charms and Transfiguration too I think..." Hugo said offering. He didn't know if she remembered, but Hugo had a pretty good memory, though he would have to think for a moment to remember her name. "Hugo Weasley," he said offering his hand for her to shake.

Jessica was quite surprised that he had remembered which classes they were in. It was either that he was observant, or he's very smart. Judging by the lecture he had just spoken about the history of cigarettes, she'd guess it was the latter. "Right, right." She could hardly concentrate much on her classes lately, because she was quite busy trying not to invade Evan's personal space. "I'm doing really badly at those classes, I'm afraid." She said with a dry laugh.

When he had reached his hand in offering, Jess didn't hesitate and reached for it, grasping his bigger hands in hers and shaking it. "Jessica Vaisey." she said, smiling. "It's lovely to meet you, Hugo." After, she had released him and pocketed her hands again. The day was getting a bit cold.

Not to brag or anything, but if asked Hugo would explain that he was both observant and quite intelligent. It's not bragging, it's just the truth. "Really? I suppose the class work is getting harder lately. Preparing us for NEWTs next year," he said. Those three subjects were some of the tougher ones they were supposed to take... it would be a shame if she succeeded to get in them, only to do badly the year before NEWTs.

It also didn't seem to bother her at all that he was a Weasley. In fact she still seemed rather pleasant, since she shook his hand too and smiled at him. He smiled back. "Nice to meet you too, Jessica," he said noticing that she pocketed her hands from the cold. "Are you cold? I have a pair of gloves I'm not using... it's harder to use a quill with them on."

Jessica smiled, though this time it didn't quite reach her eyes. "It's not quite that." she said, but was afraid to say anything more. Jess has never been the sort who blabbed on about her problems; she was the type of person who kept everything in to the point of exploding. Even if these days she was always in the brim, she always kept herslef in check. She only just met him after all, and it wasn't right to burden him with her personal issues. That wouldn't be fair to him at all.

The fact that he was a Weasley didn't really make a difference to her, as it probably would to most purebloods. Knowing such didn't change the fact that she was beginning to see that stopping to sit by him was one of the best decisions she's made in a while. It took her by immediate surprise that he was considerate enough to offer his gloves to her and with a smile, she nodded slowly. "Please? I didn't know why I didn't bring mine. I'm sorry..." she said. "But aren't yours cold?"

"Oh..." Hugo said. Her expression changed, and there was something in her voice that suggested that... it was something bothering her. He obviously didn't know what, but it really wasn't any of his business. But if it was affecting her work... "I do tutoring sometimes. If you ever needed help with homework or classwork," he suggested. It was the only thing he knew to do to help.

"Don't apologize," Hugo said smiling reaching into his bag to take out his gloves and handing them to her. "They're kind of big for your hands... but they'll keep them warm for now," he said. Her hands did look much smaller than his. "I'm alright, I'm keeping my hands busy," he said with a laugh and showing her by twirling his quill. But in showing off he only succeeded in dropping it. "Darn it..." he said shifting his books aside so he could go pick it up.

Tutoring. Jessica had to think about it for a second. She's never had any real trouble with studying, but being distrated lately has made it difficult for her to retain any informaion in her brain at all. Perhaps if someone helped her, she wouldn't do so poorly. "I... I think I would like that." she said, smiling again. A pause. "Are you always this nice?"

Jessica was a small girl. Everyone else was a giant to her. "Thank you." she said, relief in her tone as she took the gloves and put them on. Then Hugo had to do that little stunt with his hand, but managing to drop his quil after. Smiling, she clapped her hands delightedly. "Valiant effort!" she said cheerily. "See, I can't do that at all. I think it's the small hands." She raised one up in emphasis. "I can do a coin trick though, but that's about it. And with a sickle. the galleon's too big for me..."

Hugo smiled and nodded when Jessica said she'd like to have some tutoring. He was helpful, that's why he asked. She wasn't the first person he had to help with class work, but usually it was his friends or cousins he helped. He blushed and looked back down at his notes when she asked if he was always nice. "Well... I always try to be polite."

Hugo was a little embarrassed by his failed stunt but he laughed anyway when she cheered for him. "I think that's cool you can do a coin trick," Hugo said getting up and off the rock so he could pick up his quill and then sat back down where he was before, pulling his notes back.

"You're not just polite." Jessica has gone to too many social events with her insistent mother to know the difference. "Being polite takes effort sometimes. Some are polite to not offend, even though what they're thinking is completely different from what leaves their mouths. With you, I... can tell you're sincere." A small smile. "And that's a very good thing."

Another laugh. That was truly a pleasant sight to see, and a sort of relief for her to be in a lighter mood for once. "It took me years to get it right." she relieved one of her hands easily from a glove and took a sickle from her pocket. closing her hand into a loose fist, she placed the coin in the tight space between her index and middle. She moved her fingers to make the coin move from one gap to the next, then back. When she was done, she caught the coin in her palm and said 'tada!' and giggled. "That makes me special." she joked.

Hugo smiled and blushed a bit when Jessica explained the different she saw in being polite and being nice. Or at least how she said that he was sincere. "Thank you. I guess I just always try to be sincere then," he answered nodding.

He watched as she took her hand out of her glove and moved the coin over her knuckles. When she was done Hugo laughed and gave her a light applause. "Amazing. That takes skill I'm sure," he said smiling. He was sure that wasn't the only thing that made her special, but he wasn't sure if that was appropriate to say when he barely knew her.

"There you go." Jessica nodded, putting her glove back on and rubbed her hands together before placing them back on her robe pockets. "You can never go wrong with that."

Jessica laughed a little more when he gave her a light applause for her stunt. She bowed curly. "Thank you. Years of fighting boredom with doing something completely random finally paying off, yeah?" she said, before a small pause settled between them- a comfortable one, which please Jess. "I hope this isn't too bold of me. But why are you doing homework here, alone?"

"I suppose not," Hugo said smiling. This Jessica was nice. The things she said, it made Hugo feel good to be himself. Where other times people made him feel embarrassed for the things he said or for what he knew. Teasing him for the way he was...

"Oh no it's not too bold at all," Hugo said shaking his head and he set his quill down on his parchment. "I just... needed to get out of the castle for awhile. Some of my cousins and even some of my friends have been... a little hard to take lately. So I came out here where they wouldn't find me so easily."

Jessica listened as Hugo spoke his reasons for being there, doing homework in such a secluded, dank place. "So you're hiding." she said. She could understand that. Wasn't thatthe very reason why she was there herself? "What do you mean a little hard to take?" She thought she was being too bold to inquire, but something in her compelled her to ask anyway. "Are they doing something bad to you?"

Hugo nodded when Jessica simplified what he was doing. "Yeah hiding... pretty much," he said shrugging. He hesitated to tell her for a moment, since it really wasn't something so terrible... but it was embarrassing too. "Well... it's not really bad. The intentions aren't bad. Well, my friend Dwight may have some bad intentions but not towards me," he said and sighed since he was rambling. "My cousin Lily was bored, so she posted in her journal that she was looking for a girlfriend for me. And well, not everyone but a lot of people have been making fun of me for it."

"I could understand." Jessica said after he had spoken. "Not the cousin publicly advertising me part. It's the hiding part that I think I can understand." She shuffled the rocks under her with her shoes, eyes casted southward as she spoke. Before she could indulge on a little bit more, she shifted the topic right back at him, the small frown that had appeared on her lips moments before, gone. "So this search..." she started, straightening her back, though her height could only reach his ears. "How is it going? Has she found a girl for you yet?"

Hugo noticed that she was frowning when she said she could understand about hiding. And she was shuffling the rocks under her feet nervously... Something was wrong, but Hugo didn't think it would be polite enough to ask. And then she changed the subject back to him again, so Hugo didn't even have a chance to ask. He blushed when she asked if the search had worked. "I don't think so. At least no one told me. But I highly doubt it. But I'm much better off if it didn't work."

The light blush that stained the other boy's cheeks did not go unnoticed by Jessica. "Why not?" A leaf had fallen on the sleeve of his coat and reached a hand out, she brushed it away in a very sisterly fashion. "I think their intention's noble. They want you to find love." She was quite a romantic herself, one who wanted love for herself, too, though her search hasn't been successful at all lately. "I don't think that's a bad thing at all." A pause as she folderd her gloved hands again on her lap. "Don't you want to find love for yourself, Hugo?"

Hugo sighed and he watched as Jessica brushed the leaf away. "Thanks," he said thinking about how to answer her. "I know they're just trying to help me. Even if they really aren't as noble as you make them out to be... they're bored," Hugo said with a sigh. "I appreciate the efforts but... I don't know. It's just not the way I want to find someone. I don't want it to be forced. I'm not even sure I'm ready to date anyone anyway... but I would rather it be on my own terms," he said explained shrugging. "It's not like I've been looking on my own. It will happen when I'm ready."

"Are you scared of it?" she asked him in an almost whisper. "Love, I mean." She never used to be afraid of it. In fact, she used to grow excited at the thought of it.

"Well, I get teased about enough things. Them trying to find me a girlfriend is just someone else they can bug me about. If I managed to actually get a girlfriend, then they would tease me about what we do and stuff like that," Hugo said with a sigh. Sure, he was inexperienced with those kinds of things, but he didn't need his friends to constantly point that out to him. "Well... maybe a little bit. Love is a scary thing. Love shouldn't be rushed. If it was the one thing she's always needed to learn it was that, and it was again strange to be reminded of that by someone she just met. Jessica found herself nodding to his words. "Merlin, you really are smart." she said, laughing. "You're right. You should take your time in finding the right one for you. And I'm hoping you do soon. You deserve it."

Lightly, she patted his arm before she found herself standing, dusting herself off with her hands. "I'm glad I met you today, Hugo." He has managed to say things that comforted her in ways she could never explain, and for that she was genunely grateful. Jess took off the gloves he had lent her and gve them back to him. "It's getting dark. I don't usualy stay out this late. I'm..." a pause. "... not the biggest fan of the dark, you see."

Hugo blushed when she said that he was smart again. And that he deserved to find someone. Well, he did think that everyone deserved to be happy with someone. He just didn't find that someone yet. "Thank you," he said nodding to Jess.

He looked up at Jess when she patted her arm and got up off the rock. "I'm glad to have met you too, Jessica," he said smiling. It really had been an interesting meeting. It was nice to be able to talk to someone who wasn't always trying to tease him. But she was right, it was getting dark. Hugo held his gloves for a moment before he handed them back to Jess. "I'll walk you back up to the castle then. You can give me my gloves there," he offered and closed up his books on his lap. "I won't be able to see out here to finish my work soon anyway."

It was with a faint, but genuine smile that Jessica accepted his offer and stepped to the side. "That would be lovely." She waited for him to stand, with her carefully shrugging the gloves back on, before they both headed up to the Castle. She couldn't shake off the pleasant smile that adorned her face. She had found a friend even in the midst of a storm and because of that, she at least didn't feel quite so lonely anymore...
