Sébastien had met Ben when he was a doctoral student in Biddeford. Although the psychology and economics departments were separated well enough, Sébastien had developed a rapport with the young professor. It was one of mutual respect and both academic and intellectual intrigue, and Sébastien was guilt of losing touch with the other man when he’d set up his practice in Portland. Those had been busy, secluded days, though now that he was in Lakewood Shores, there was no excuse as to why he wouldn’t see him again.
Thus Sébastien had dug out the professor’s university email and proposed that they meet up for coffee at the very least, which was what brought him to Thanks A Latte. Sipping a cappuccino at a table, he waited for Ben to appear.
Ben had been surprised to hear from Sébastien. It had been years since he had talked to the other man. So when the suggestion came that they meet for coffee, he jumped at it. There was a lot to fill the other man in on, that was sure.
Hating that he was a couple of minutes late thanks to a student waiting for him in the halls, Ben walked into Thanks A Latte and grabbed his own latte before finding the other man. He grinned and came over. "Sébastien! How are you?"
Sébastien didn’t notice the professor right away. The cafe was fairly crowded and he was sitting far enough in the back that Ben could get his latte in peace, though he did look up and see his approach, so smiled politely and stood. “Ben!” he replied and offered his hand out for a friendly shake with his free hand before they could settle at the table. “I am well - completely settled now. I bought a house here and joined the medical center, so the world has gotten smaller. How about yourself? How have the last years treated you?”
"That's great," Ben said as he sat down after warmly shaking the other man's hand. "I would say it has." He chuckled and took a sip of his coffee. "Well, I got married this summer and am expecting a baby."
Sébastien's look of surprise was immediate, though there really wasn't anything to be surprised about, was there? People settled down, got married, and moved on with the next chapter of their lives. And of course Ben would have such luck in those ventures. "A double congratulations then," he said with a warm smile. "I believe that news trumps mine any day. Married and a baby on the way. I should have taken you out for drinks, not coffee."
