Who: Gordon Calder and Grayson Whitby
What: Getting new orders
Where: Calder's office
When: November 10, morning
Rating: some light cursing
It still hasn't sunk in that this was actually Calder's office. It was crazy but he was so glad. He liked his job and knew that Whitby would be back today. Maybe it was a little mean to let the transfer request to leave without a job title on it but he didn't want to miss the oppertunity to grab Whitby. He took a drink of his coffee and checked his watch. Grayson would be here soon. It would be nice to see his friend again.
Grayson hadn't left Lillian's side since he got home. He had never been much of a religious person, but he spent most of the night tossing and turning and praying he wouldn't be sent away again. He got up and kissed Lillian before driving over to base to find out more about the mysterious reassignment. He knocked on the door of the office he was told to report to and waited anxiously for a response.
Calder grinned when he heard the knock. "In" he called and finished signing the paperwork to make the assignment official. He looked up and didn't want to miss that reaction.
Grayson walked in and began to salute his new superior, until he realized it was Calder. "Calder? What are you doing here?"
"Feel free to finish that salute," Calder smirked. "Close the door." He waited for Whitby. "My promotion finally came through so I am in charge of the shooting range."
Grayson just stared at him for a moment before it all dawned on him. He sat down across from his friend and just stared at him for a moment. "You asshole! Why didn't you tell me?"
Calder chuckled. "Mostly because I didn't want to get your hopes up. Partially because you only wanted to talk about Lil when we talked." Calder smirked. "Ok...and for that reaction." He took a drink of his coffee. "So want to run the shooting range with me? You'll be less likely to be shipped out and make that extra pay but..." He shrugged. "You'll be here more."
Grayson pulled his phone out and quickly texted Lillian to let her know they weren't sending him away. "If it means I don't have to leave town, definitely." He knew he wasn't really being asked, if he would take the job, he was reassigned and there was nothing he could do one way or the other.
"It's exactly what that means," Calder said. "You'll get to help teach the kids to shoot and stay alive." He sighed. "And if you get bored out of your mind, let me know. That's why the other guy left. He took a job in Gitmo." He shook his head. He didn't understand that at all. "I'd hate to drive you to that."
"I've been to Gitmo two too many times, nothing will drive me to that," Grayson confided. He was quiet for a moment. "Thank you…you're still an asshole, but thank you."
"I didn't think that would be an issue." Calder chuckles at that. "Maybe a little but that girl of yours would have hunted me down if I interrupted her homecoming."
"Not with this news," Grayson said, "we've spent the last week worried I was leaving town again."
"Well you aren't so I'm off the hook," Calder grinned. "Also means a lot less overnights which I don't know about you but I am fucking sick of."
"It will be nice to have more consistent hours," Grayson agreed. "So what else did I miss around here while I was in Gitmo?"
“Well, you know I’m not dating Natashia anymore, right? Calder asked, taking a drink of his coffee. “I think that’s it. Oh and Gizborne requested to transfer to ‘someplace more exciting’.” He snorted. “What a jackass.”
"What happened with Natashia?" Grayson asked, though deep down he was pleased that his friend was done with her. She was hot but she had a lot of issues that Calder didn't have time to deal with, nor should he have to deal with it. He tried not to let the pleasure show. "He can take exciting. I'll stay home."
"Well," Calder on the surface it seemed so complicated but dig a little deeper and the explanation became a little clearer. "Susie mostly," he shrugged a tad on the sheepish side. "I met her and one thing lead to another. Natasha's engagement broke up and I still wanted to be with Susie. You should meet her. I think you'll like this one." He chuckled good naturedly. "Not that you seem to like any of my girlfriends."
Grayson shrugged. "Have I been wrong about those?" he asked. "Maybe we should do a double date this weekend? So I can meet her."
"Fine...go on your track record," Calder chuckled. "We should. I'll talk to Susie. It would be fun."
"Hopefully Susie won't have to fall on that list," Grayson teased. "So dinner Saturday?" he asked.
"I think that you will like Susie. She's great," Calder grinned. "Yea that sounds good."
