In the rush to get back to the Varden from Ellesmera, Eragon almost didn't notice the swirl of light in front of them. Saphira? he said, gently touching the dragon's conscious. What is that?

But it was too late to turn around. The winds that had pushed against them on the way to Du Weldenvarden were pushing them forwards, and before Saphira could even get her wings under her, the wind pushed them forwards to the light. The landscape around them changed almost instantly. What had once been desert was now lush and colorful, and yet somehow faded. Moving into Saphia's mind, Eragon noticed the colors were dull and bland even through her eyes. What is this place? he asked, as much to himself as to her.

I don't know, she replied, glancing around to get her bearings. It's strange. It doesn't feel like home. Or anywhere near there, honestly. I don't like the look of it.

"Me either," he replied out loud, and with a nudge of his knee, he urged her downwards. "Come on, let's check it out."

This isn't a good idea, Little One, she scolded. We have places to be, in case you've forgotten. Nasuada?

Eragon felt a twinge of guilt, but shook his head. If it's not the Empire, then we've nothing to worry about, do we? Come on, I want to know what's going on.

Though he could feel her discomfort at the idea, Saphira relented and ducked under a gust of wind. It's colder here, she commented, but landed with a gentle 'thump'. Eragon climbed off of her back, jumping to the ground with still newly discovered grace. Puzzled, he glanced around, taking in the tents and sounds that looked like some sort of Faire. A poor one, but a Faire just the same. Carvahall had very few in his time, and this certainly couldn't complete with an elven celebration, but it was happening just the same.

Bella was growing more and more accustomed to the idea that she was trapped in whatever bizarre waking nightmare she'd fallen into. She'd spent the better part of the day before in a coma like sleep brought on by shock and exhaustion from crying herself to sleep. It was only when the rain began to patter outside her window that she slipped into restless nightmares. She dreamed of dark forests filled with creatures that stared at her, watching her, waiting… She'd woken with a start and hadn't been able to get back to sleep after that—not that she'd even want to. Instead she looked through her journal until the sun rose behind thick gray clouds, and she was glad she'd left her house with her raincoat and water proof boots.

Though there were clothes in her room (a discovery made in her pre-dawn attempt to chase away the nightmare), she dressed in the same clothes she'd arrived in, not ready to completely succumb to the circumstances. She'd made no attempts to see the area she'd appeared in, and despite the rain she figured it was best to get it over with. Slipping on her boots and stuffing her journal into her backpack (which she still refused to let out of her sight), she pocketed her room key and slipped out into her dorm hallway, and then, reluctantly, out into the rainy new day.

She had been walking around not more than a minute or two when a dungy looking assortment of tents and people caught her eye. It didn't look all that … there, she finally decided, but it was the main point of interest, and it would provide some respite from the rain, so she headed there, head ducked to keep out the rain, hands holding the straps of her jacket, ready to catch herself if she tripped. She was almost there when a noise distracted her. She could hear it above the rain, but it wasn't anything familiar. She looked around, her brows knitting together until a crease formed in the bridge of her nose. She finally tilted her head up as the giant dragon landed not more than 5 feet away from her. She gasped, a fearful yelp escaping as a surge of fear rooted her legs to the ground. Her eyes went wide with fear. She wanted to run, but she couldn't get her legs to cooperate. Instead, she stood there, looking stunned. Her instincts told her to scream for help, or at least stay silent and try to slip away undetected, but what really came out was a sharp, "That's a dragon!" Her voice cracking at the end.

It was probably the wrong decision on his part, but Eragon couldn't help it. He laughed at the girl's reaction, hearing Saphira chuckle to herself as well. Grinning a bit, he glanced up at the blue dragon with pride before nodding at the girl. "Aye, that she is. You've never seen one, I take it?" Well, that wasn't all that surprising. Most people hadn't.

You don't know we can trust her, a soft voice murmured, touching his mind. Eragon brushed off the dragon's concern, however, as he often did when he thought she was being overprotective. Still, he casually brushed the hilt of the sword at his waist, verifying that his new addition still sat safely. Even if he could trust this girl, he didn't know for sure he could trust anyone else around them. She seems harmless, he told Saphira.

I can't get into her mind. Saphira seemed put out, and Eragon shot her a look that plainly said she shouldn't have been attempting to without permission anyway. "You wouldn't happen to know where we are?" he asked, hoping the girl would've recovered from her shock enough to at least match them appropriately to the right location.

There was laughter somewhere nearby, and it forced Bella's mind to release her from her fixed position. She turned her too wide eyes to the source of the sound, and took in the boy that found some humor in her shock. It was as if her mind was working in slow motion and collecting hyper sharp details as she took him in. He was obviously not from Forks, or whatever world Forks existed in. His hand touched what could only be the hilt of a sword, and he was standing so close to the huge mythical creature that he was obviously not afraid of the beast. It felt like ages to process this all, to come to the logical conclusions, but really, it was only a brief few seconds of staring before she swallowed her fear and tried to process his second comment. He was asking where he was. He must be new, just like she'd been the day before.

Unfrozen Bella took a step back unconsciously, as she began to answer his question, "You're..." She managed before her already unsteady feet caught on the flat ground, a task she had perfected, and she found her balance tipped. She went backward, landing flat on her butt on the squishy wet ground, leaning back as she fell and tipping her hood back exposing her thick brown hair to the rain. She flushed red with embarrassment and scrambled to push herself up before he could laugh, or offer to help. "You're not wherever you were five minutes ago." She said, her tone considerably less fearful now, laced with agitation at herself, as she got to her feet and steadied herself. She looked at her wet palms, with little bits of mud and grass sticking to them and frowned, wiping them on her damp jeans before turning back to the boy. "I mean..." She gave a wary look to the dragon again before trying to be more articulate, "If you're anything like me, from what I've gathered, you've been taken from your world, and brought here." Her frown deepened, causing the crease between her brows to reappear. "There should be a little creature thing here to explain it better." She added, looking around for the journal-totting animal that had chased her roughly 24 hours ago.

She spotted the creature and pointed, giving an apologetic look to the boy, and then another weary glance at the dragon. "We're all from somewhere else." She added a little softer, her voice holding more kindness and a trace of sadness, feeling horrible for her momentary slip.

Eragon blinked when a creature that mildly resembled a damaged dwarf. Orik would bristle at the comparison, but it was the closest thing Eragon could think of. What it was, he had no idea. It shoved a leather bound book in his hand, and a tiny golden key. Eragon narrowed his eyes, shooting an annoyed look back at the dragon as Saphira merely laughed again. Be nice, he warned her, and he accepted the 'gifts', allowing his hand to slip from the sword. If the clumsy girl in front of him was any sort of threat, he was relatively sure his instincts would be faster than hers.

He let her words absorb, noticing that for once, Saphira chose to be annoyingly silent. The one time he could use her advice and she kept quiet. Brat. They were all from somewhere else. Someone had chosen for them to be there. Nothing was adding up, or making any sense. Galbatorix? He asked Saphira. Could this be a ploy of his? When she didn't answer, he looked up at her and noted a note of amusement flickering in her eyes. Eragon rolled his eyes and turned back to the girl.

"Are you alright?" he questioned, noting her fall. "You should be grateful for the mud, it shielded you a fair bit, I'd think."

Bella watched the alarming little creature repeat its task the same way it had the day before, and watched as the boy took the situation in. He kept glancing at the dragon, giving it meaningful looks, and Bella couldn't help but shudder at the sight of it. She wrapped her arms around her small frame to try to hold in some of the warm that escaped from her body into her coat. When he addressed her, commenting on her fortune, a wry smile began to pull at the corners of her lips. "Yeah, lucky me." She said with a reluctant chuckle. The truth was she was used to falling, and she preferred to land on dry ground and feel a little more pain than wet ground and be wet. "I'm fine." She finished with a sigh. She looked around, glancing one last time at the dragon and then gave a nod as she took a careful step forward, keeping distance between her and the dragon but stepping closer to the boy. When she was as close as her thundering heart dared get to the giant creature, she stopped. Her breathing was quicker than before and she tried to steady it as she began speaking to him once more. "I'm sorry." She said, trying to look sympathetic rather than scared. "I'm Bella. I was leaving my house for school yesterday, and when I walked out my front door, I was here." She said, trying to explain. She wasn't good with words, and wasn't comfortable being so verbose, but she fought through the insecurity. "The journal," She said gesturing to the book in his hand, "It's..."She tried to find the right word, "Well, it's magic I guess. You can write in it and everyone with a journal like that can see it and comment to it, and you can see theirs too." She tucked back a strand of wet hair, eyes glancing up at the sky, feeling the cold rain hit her face for a moment before looking back down at him. "The key is a room key. You're assigned a place to stay while you're stuck here. There's no way out, and no use trying…that's what I've gathered anyway." She shrugged, her heart physically aching as she relayed the last nugget of information.

She's afraid of me, Saphira commented, her eyes lighting up playfully. I sort of like that idea. Should I roar or something equally threatening? Eragon shot her a dirty look, though a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. Stop, she's being helpful.

Turning back to Bella, he offered her a gentle smile. "A journal filled with magic? Curious." Carefully, his fingers ran over the cover. A place to fill with his thoughts, fears, and emotions? It certainly sounded like it could be the Empire keeping watch on him. Composing the spell in the Ancient Language in his head, he closed his eyes and focused on the book. Aside from some basic magic used to connect it to the other journals in the area, he couldn't detect anything particularly sinister. There was something somewhat disturbing about them, but nothing exactly evil. "Huh. Well, I suppose I could try it. And a room, you say?" He glanced up at Saphira, knowing he'd be just as happy curled up under her wing.

"Right, sorry," he added a beat later, realizing just how rude he was being. "I'm Eragon, son of Brom." The last bit was added with just a hint of pride. It was still so new to him, but he was grateful to be able to say it. "This is Saphira, and she is, as you pointed out, a dragon. She's friendly, unless you've plans of attacking her." She doesn't have any magic, Saphira pointed out. But I still can't reach her. I don't understand it. "And she's a bit put out that she can't seem to talk to you." Which might sound crazy to anyone without a dragon talking to them constantly, but Eragon didn't really know any better. By that point, his mind and Saphira's were so closely linked that he didn't think much of it.

Bella stood watching silently as he looked over the journal he'd just been presented with. She knew that under any other circumstances, informing him that he was holding a magic journal would have earned her a contemptuous look questioning her sanity, but with a creature straight out of Dragonheart standing not more than 10 feet away, it didn't seem that farfetched. Overall, he seemed to be taking the news rather well, and she wondered if she had explained it right—the seriousness of the situation. Thus far, no one really seemed that shocked or terrified by the circumstances. Bella, on the other hand, was still having a hard time with this new world. It had only been a day—she was still feeling dazed, confused, and scared. She was muscling through those emotions, of course, but she was pretty sure she'd be living with them for a while. Under normal circumstances, she was good at blocking out painful, unnecessary things from her memory, but this seemed too big even for her. Then again, only time would tell.

When he finally turned back to her, introducing himself, she offered a small smile in return. She was still recovering from the dragon panic attack, but her heart was almost at a normal pace now, and the adrenaline was fading, and as a result, the small gesture was earnest and brightened her face ever so slightly. She opened her mouth to offer her assistance with his room when Eragon began introducing his dragon. She looked at the creature then, her heart picking up it's pace again, but the smile she gave Saphira wasn't masking fear, and only faded when Eragon informed her that Saphira couldn't speak with her. Confusion returned then, "She can't talk to me?" She parroted, making it a question. "I..." She began, only to find she didn't know what to say to that. "I'm sorry, I don't understand." She confessed looking sheepish again. Her eyes returned to the dragon, "I'm sorry." She apologized, feeling guilty for the unintentional slight that she wasn't even sure how she was committing. She wondered if it was just that she hadn't been addressing her personally or if it was something more than that.

He offered her a reassuring smile, remembering only a moment later that she was from a completely different world. Her style of dress was unlike anything he'd ever seen, the materials loose and soft-looking. She wore pants, like Arya, but hers weren't of the same material in any sense. But what he noticed most of all was how very scared she seemed. And shy. Definitely shy. This Bella actually reminded him a bit of Katrina, Roran's new wife. Quiet, but she had an air to her that seemed she could be passionate about what she chose to.

He would've dwelled on that for a while had Saphira not nudged his shoulder with her nose. Get on with it, then! I want to know why she's all blocked off. It's not normal, I tell you. Eragon grinned up at her, shaking his head. "Impatient, aren't you?" he questioned, then turned back to Bella with another smile. "Saphira can communicate, just as you and I do. Only she uses her mind instead of words. It's not often she actually wants to, consider yourself lucky, but... Well, it seems yours is a bit blocked off. That's...well, not something we usually run into."

Was it the change of location? The new world they'd apparently stumbled into? Did she have a form of magic he'd never experienced? Or was it something darker? If she was so evil, she'd have killed them both and been done with it, catching them off guard the way they'd been. What was she?

Bella's hand moved up to her head as he explained what the problem was, and she rubbed her forehead as if that would fix things. "I..." She began, stopping and trying to compose her thoughts on the matter. She didn't think people could even read minds, but she couldn't exactly doubt the plausibility of his statement; not when everything about this place was so impossible. Finally she shrugged. "I'm sorry." She said again, apologizing to Saphira before her eyes moved back to Eragon. "I'm not doing anything to stop her... not to my knowledge." She rubbed idly at her temple, turning her eyes back to look at Saphira. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, feeling silly, but trying to start the telepathic conversation. "Um...hello." She thought, hoping she just needed to start the conversation. "I'm not really sure how this works." She added, wincing a little. She felt foolish trying to have a conversation with someone using only her mind, and so when she didn't hear anything in return she bit her lip, eyes falling to the ground in a distinctly guilty expression. "I'm not sure what's wrong." She admitted, "I've never had anyone try to read my mind before..." She looked back up, her head still ducked ever so slightly, "I wish I could be of more help." Another shrug followed and she seemed to be out of any sort of answers.

"Oh, I'm sure it's nothing," Eragon confirmed, though he wasn't entirely sure about that. What was wrong with this place that Saphira couldn't touch on this girl's conscious? Is it just her? he asked the dragon silently.

Maybe? Saphira answered, and he could feel her taking in their surroundings. Couldn't get anything from that creature that handed you the book, either. But others... I can feel plenty of them. A quick dive into his own mind and Eragon realized she was right. They were surrounded by people of varying emotions and thoughts. But he couldn't pick anything up from this girl, either. "Don't worry about it," he told Bella, smiling a bit, though it was a little more hesitant now. "I can always relay important messages. Did you... Did I hear you mention no leaving?" Surely she was wrong about that. Maybe you just couldn't walk out. But why shouldn't Saphira be able to fly? And they'd rescue anyone who was trapped there and get back to the Varden before it was too late and Nasuada skinned him alive.

Bella was glad when he switched topics. It kept her from dwelling too long on whether or not something was wrong with her. If the pair really could read minds, then why couldn't they read hers? Was there something wrong with her? Did her brain get damaged when she was brought over to this strange place? She would dwell on those questions when she was alone in her room again. Until then she was glad of the distraction. "It's one of the rules." She explain. Among the many things she had learned that morning, this was one of them. "Once you're here you're stuck here until you're released." She explained, trying to keep from sounding too resigned. "You're not supposed to try to leave, but even if you do..." She trailed off, not wanting to finish the thought. "There's a Labyrinth," She pointed toward the large wall at the edge of the city, "I think something happens if you can find your way through it. There's food here though, and a faire... I think." She said, pointing in the direction she'd originally been heading. "Dorms are over there." She gestured behind her.

She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, biting her lip again as she watched the pair. They'd flown in, she'd seen them land, and so in all likelihood they could probably just try to fly back out. It made sense, and yet, nothing there seemed to make sense. "You shouldn't try to go anywhere." She said, not sure why she was warning him, concern filling her tone and features. "I don't know the rule that well, I'm new too," She explained, "But... so far...nothing here makes all that much sense...and...I don't think it's safe." She had a hard time articulating her thoughts properly. Aside from the initial shock, Eragon and Sephira seemed very nice. He seemed kind, and Saphira hadn't tried to eat her, which was good enough for Bella. She didn't want to see anything happen to the pair. She didn't have a solid reason for her warning, but she felt it was necessary none the less.

Rules? They'd gone and landed in a place with rules? Eragon shook his head, a sudden pit of worry devloping in his stomach. Surely she didn't mean it? But she sounded pretty unsure of everything else here, anyway. "That's...not good news," he commented, nervousness flickering over his features. "Saphira?"

I'm on it, the brilliant blue dragon replied, lifting off with a huge push of her legs and a burst of her wings. Eragon was grateful their magic still worked, as he had the feeling there were plenty of things that would be wrong in this strange and peculiar world. He watched for a moment, focused more on his close friend than the girl they'd just met. His mind was completely linked with hers, and he felt her dismay at hitting the edges of the city where they'd just come from and being repelled. Something was keeping her from breaking a barrier, some sort of field that trapped her inside. She flew back to them, politely landing a few feet away and walking over so as to not give Bella quite so much of a start.

"I've never seen anything like it," he murmured, looking in the direction Saphira had just come from. "Then again, there's been plenty of things in the last year that I haven't seen before." Shaking his head again, this time in disbelief, he turned back to Bella, his smile quite a bit more hesitant. "Saphira and I...well, we're used to things that aren't exactly safe. I just don't know...how."

Bella watched, completely fascinated this time, as Saphira lifted off and flew away. It was like something out of a movie only 10 times more beautiful, and absolutely real. The dragon was immense, but it moved quickly and gracefully, and it was an awe-inspiring sight. It even distracted her from the fact that her hair was now soaked through, and the cold rain occasionally hit with a slight stinging speed.

When Saphira returned, Bella watched the emotions play out on Eragon's face, and wondered if the two were talking again. She gave him a brighter smile this time when he turned his attention to her, trying to be more encouraging—reassuring at the very least. She knew how it felt, and she sympathized with the pair. "There's a lot about this place that doesn't make sense." She said again, her tone soft, expressing that she understood how he felt. "If it helps though, nothing has seemed outright dangerous." She pursed her lips then, holding back her next comment: it was more like they were being kidnapped with no ransom and no intentions of return. She wasn't sure there was an actual danger present. It was just that they were abducted. She wished now that she'd watched the x-files growing up. Maybe there would have been some helpful tips for her.

"If you want, I can show you where the dorms are?" She offered, trying to be helpful after her total lack of information. "Your room comes with clothes and some belongings...mine did anyway." She shrugged, pausing. Her heart went out to the pair who were now in the same awful position she had found herself in the day before. "I'm really sorry about all this." She said again. She didn't know why she was apologizing, she had nothing to do with what was going on, but it seemed like the right thing to say. She was sorry they were here and couldn't go home. She felt horrible for everyone who found themselves stuck. It was a terrible feeling.

With an offer like that, how could he refuse? It would've just been rude, after all. And perhaps exploring these dorms would give him an idea of what, exactly, was going on. Mostly, how to get out. And he wanted to explore the little book a bit more. It reeked of magic, but nothing he himself knew how to work. He wished desperately Oromis was there, but that obviously wouldn't be happening.

"Thank you," he replied, giving a small bow as was courtesy. She didn't get the traditional gesture of the elves, but he did want to at least treat her with respect. After all, she'd been nothing but kind to the both of them, and Eragon had the feeling that would be necessary in this place. "I take it the number on the key is the number of the room?" He glanced up at Saphira, with concern. I doubt they acommodated for you, you know.

With a huff, she cocked her head as if annoyed. Probably not. They will before long, or they'll find that entire Labyrinth burnt to a crisp. "You can walk with us," Eragon added, shooting her a smile. "If, that is, Bella doesn't mind." He turned to their new companion with a grin. Already he could feel Saphira's annoyance at being put second, but he reassured her with an image of the two of them spending plenty of time together later.

Bella nodded in response to his question about the room keys. Luckily, the man who was responsible for their kidnapping was also thoughtful when it came to labeling things well. It was not only helpful, but well organized, which eased Bella's mind a little. She could handle chaos and disorder, but she preferred when things were neat and tidy. Her room at home was evidence of that.

She smiled her thanks when he bowed. She wasn't sure if she was supposed to curtsey, or bow in return. So far the only people she'd run into seemed to have old-fashioned manners, and while she was polite, they left her unsure of herself. She reached up, pushing back the wet strands of her hair that had begun to stick to the side of her cheeks and neck, pulling them back to clear her face, trying to fill the moment and prevent herself from doing something awkward. "Do you mind?" She said finally, moving forward finally, closing the distance between them, and holding out her hand for his key. She would be able to help him find it easier if she knew which one it was.

She looked at Saphira then, her expression pleasant despite the fact that being so close made her heart race. She didn't want to be afraid, but she couldn't help her natural bodily reactions. She would fight through them, and in the meantime she would be careful not to let them effect how she reacted to the blue giant. "I'm not sure the dorms were meant to hold a dragon," She said apologetically, "But you're welcome to come along." She offered a polite smile when she finished, before turning to look at Eragon She suddenly wondered silently, if Saphira could even understand her. Maybe it only worked telepathically. She felt embarrassment wash over her at that prospect, and her cheeks colored in response.

If Saphira were human, the lift of the brow above her eye would've been even more noticeable. As it was, Eragon, who knew her every tiny move, barely caught it and grinned just the same. Clearly, Bella was earning the dragon's respect, whether she knew it or not. He also knew that it pained her to not be able to express herself properly. Granted, he was used to relaying messages for her, but since the people they'd been around lately had mostly been deeply in their trust, she hadn't had to use him.

"She didn't think they would," he informed her, handing over his key. As if to reassure her of what he hadn't heard her say, he grinned. "She can still hear you. And she can talk right back, you just can't hear her." Which, he'd discovered over the last year, was often for the best. Saphira could be gentle at moments, but was more often than not sarcastic and rambunctious.

"You said you're new," he commented casually, falling into step beside Bella, Saphira walking along behind. He could hear the dragon's amusement at the stunned looks she was getting, and he stifled a laugh in order to keep talking. "When did you say you got here? Yesterday? You've hardly had time to get your bearings then, have you?"

Once again guilt clouded Bella's expression when he mentioned that Saphira couldn't talk back to her. The idea of her mind being broken troubled her more than she cared to admit, and yet the more prevalent thought was guilt for blocking out (and possibly insulting) her new acquaintance. Then again, if she really thought about it, she wasn't sure she wanted people being able to read her thoughts. She didn't really think up anything extraordinary, but still... privacy was something she treasured.

She took the key from him, smiling again, though the gesture wasn't able to remove the crease of guilt that sat on her brow. Her mother always called her an open book, and she hated that she was so easy to read. She glanced down at the key, taking a moment to remember where she'd seen his dorm, and then began to walk. Normally people could walk and look over something like that, but not Bella. If she tried to do anything while she was walking, she fell down. Even just plain walking was hazardous to her health, and she didn't need to fall again in front of the pair.

"Yeah," She confirmed, "I got here yesterday." She stuffed her hands in the pockets of her rain coat, knowing that if she fell again she wouldn't be able to save herself in time, but taking the chance anyway. "I arrived outside the city, so I got a good look coming in." She frowned again thinking about her own arrival. "I only really know the dorms though." She added, not wanting to mention passing out for the better part of the day before, not taking advantage of the sun to explore. She was pretty sure it was a result of shock, and she was feeling a little embarrassed about it now. "I know there's food set up that way, though." She paused, pointing in the direction they'd come from. She offered Saphira a smile and then faced forward again, leading the way once more. "That's about it though. I was exploring when I...ran into you two." She said, trying to make their meeting sound a little less humiliating now that she knew the pair were harmless.

Ran into, indeed. More like had the life scared out of her. Eragon felt Saphira perk up at his thought and he scolded her. If she was going to take this much pleasure out of scaring people, he'd have to put her in hiding, and he knew she wouldn't take too kindly to that. She was an opinionated creature, if nothing else.

"Not the best weather to go exploring in," he commented, finally really taking notice of the rain that seemed to shift from misty to pelting off and on. The shock of arriving at all had thrown his senses out of order, and for someone so in tune with themselves, that was a dangerous thing. Gauging his strength, he figured he'd enough of a rest in Ellesmera to use up a bit on some basic comforts. Drawing his energy up, he carefully constructed a few words in the Ancient Language and found the three of them in a bubble, untouchable by the rain but invisible to anyone outside of it. It moved with them as they walked, and as he experimentally placed a hand out, he discovered that it encompassed him no matter where he moved. "There, that's a bit better. Now, tell me, where are you from? I've the feeling you're not from Alagaesia, though I've no way to support that theory but by your style of dress."

Bella nodded in sheepish agreement when he commented that the rain wasn't exactly weather for exploring in. She hated the rain. She was a creature of warmth and sun, and being out in weather like this was high on her list of things not to do, but she couldn't just hide out in her room forever, now could she? "Everyone's gotta eat." She commented lightly, trying to justify her actions, though she agreed with him completely.

Hating rain as much as she did, her first reaction to the lack of it falling on her, was amazed gratitude. Her secondary reaction—that probably should have been the first since no umbrella had been produced—was confusion. She looked up for a moment; slowing considerably for two steps, stunned by the invisible...force field was the only thing she could think to call it. She didn't need to ask what was going on, because before the words could even be formed, he said 'that was better', and it was obvious he was the cause of the magic. Standing next to the boy with his delicate elfin features, his dragon, and now his use of magic, Bella couldn't help but feel a little inferior. She was used to this, but that didn't stop it from making her shoulders hunch ever so slightly, especially when he commented on her clothing. She looked down to what she was wearing, causing her to take a sort of hop/stumble step before righting herself and giving a quick apologetic smile. She glanced up at his clothing then and noted the difference. "I'm not from Alagaesia," She confirmed. "I'm from..." She wasn't sure if Earth was appropriate... were magical lands technically plants or just countries on the planet? "Arizona." She decided on. "It's this really hot, dry, sunny, beautiful place." There was a hint of nostalgia and sorrow in her voice. She missed Arizona. "Although, I was living with Charlie, my Dad," She quickly amended, "And he's from a town called Forks, where the weather is just like this. Jeans and a raincoat are pretty standard there." She referred to her outfit before casting a glance up at the sky, amazed again that they were being kept dry. "We don't have dragons, or magic, or anything like that where I'm from. That's why Saphira was such a shock." It was an excuse for her reaction, but she felt it was needed. The blue dragon had done nothing to appear harmful and she shouldn't have acted so badly. She turn her attention to him then, "I'm sure it's much different from, Alagaesia." She hoped this would encourage him to talk about his world. She was curious to know more about it and him, but she wasn't sure if it would be okay to pry, and she didn't want to come off as over eager.

Her clumsiness, though not something he ordinarily minded, struck him as intriguing in this strange world. She was pretty, but not overwhelmingly so the way Arya sometimes was. In fact, Eragon had the feeling she didn't even know it. It was refreshing, considering most elves knew instantly they were beautiful, and the girls back home in Carvahall worked overtime to be pretty.

Her story was actually nearly as interesting to him as his was to her. Sure, she didn't come with a dragon in tow, but a place called Arizona? He attempted to trace the name but couldn't; it had no roots in any language he was trained in. And she lived with her father, which made him think of Katrina again, living with the awful man after her mother's death. And he, who hadn't even known who his own father was until a day before. She was lucky in ways she probably didn't even know. "It doesn't rain very often back home," he confirmed, glancing up at the sky. "Just enough for the crops, sometimes less. I actually think it has a bit to do with the Empire. The leader, he's... Well, calling him a Dragon Rider's a bit too much of a compliment, I think, but he technically is. Magic and all." Eragon glanced affectionately back at his own dragon, who had pulled her way out of his protective shield in order to splash her tail in the rain puddles. "Doesn't seem all that different, though. Well, different people, perhaps, and clothing, of course. But magic and dragons are pretty rare there, too. Saphira's the last female dragon in existence." This time his expression was a bit mournful, and in a rare moment of defense, he guarded his mind from her. No need to remind her that, without her finding a mate in the remaining egg, her race would die out.

Head down, watching where she placed each step, Bella couldn't hide her curiosity when he began to describe Alagaesia. It seemed like weather was a universal constant, but the rest...? Magic, empires, dragon riders (which she assumed meant people who road dragons, though she wasn't entirely positive)... it all sounded so fascinating. She was never one of those girls with her head in the clouds, dreaming up fantasies or adventures. She was simple in her tastes--even in her reading, but hearing his description, knowing that he was real, flesh and blood, and so was the place he was describing...well, it sent a small thrill down her spine. No matter what he thought, it didn't sound like Forks in any way shape or form. Forks was rainy and dreary. The only thing to mark the passing of time was school, which aside from the first eventful day and the mystery that was Edward Cullen's momentary hatred of her, was exceedingly routine.

The corners of her mouth pulled down in a frown when he mentioned that Saphira was the last female of her kind. She had only just discovered the dragon existed, and already she couldn't imagine a world without her. She turned, mirroring him, and glanced back at the dragon, a soft smile forming as she watched her play with the puddles. A chuckle bubbled out of her lips, soft and barely audible, and the only thing that pulled her attention forward again was her foot catching on the ground again, reminding her to watch where she was walking. When she turned her attention back to walking, she bit lip to stop the from returning. She knew it was probably silly, but she hoped very much that Saphira and Eragon would be released soon. Her desire for their release even exceeded her own wish to be home. She simply didn't want that sort of fate to befall them.

Still, that didn't seem like an appropriate topic, and so she picked up on his previous statement as they neared the dorms. "I'd have to see Alagaesia to be sure, but it sounds like there are some key differences." She commented, her tone taking on a teasing quality at the end, "Although they probably have a lot of fundamentals in common." She conceded. "Though, I think things would be a lot more interesting in Forks if we had magic and dragon riders." She tried to keep her tone light, and found that it wasn't as hard as she'd anticipated. Worry aside, she found Eragon easy to talk to. So far, he hadn't made a big deal of her clumsiness, he was quick to offer a smile despite his current situation, and he seemed genuinely nice. He wasn't as devastatingly handsome as Edward Cullen, though he was still handsome--almost beautiful even, which made him less intimidating. Also, he wasn't someone she recognized from the pages of any book she read as a child which seemed to make him more real than Caspian had been, and if asked, she would have to admit that next to Edward, he held her interest more than anyone she'd met in a while. She had dozens of questions she wanted to ask him about where he was from, and what his world was like. It disappointed her to see that they were coming to their destination and her time speaking with him would be up.

Several rows of buildings loomed in front of them, and Eragon stared at them curiously. They looked nothing like the village of Carvahall, nor the tents the Varden used. They did seem to be made of stone, but they definitely weren't in a mountain, as the dwarves were. For a moment, he was hesitant and his steps slowed a bit. It wasn't fear that coursed through him; he and Saphira had fought several battles and killed plenty of creatures out to kill him, fear didn't strike him easily anymore. But he was definitely wary of this new dwelling. There was so little they knew about it and worse, there were much more important places they needed to be.

Nasuada's going to slay us both, Saphira commented, swishing her tail through a puddle with much less enthusiasm than she had a moment ago. Eragon grinned despite their situation as her large blue head slid between he and Bella, resting on his shoulder. He patted her nose, rolling his eyes at her bossiness.

"I imagine they're much different," he agreed, glancing around. "There's so many different sorts of people here. I've never seen anything like it. At home, we have people, but also elves and dwarves, Urgals and Shades." His face squinched in a bit of a grimace at the mention of the latter two. "But the people here... They're from all different worlds. You can feel it." In some ways it disturbed him, knowing the power that must've been in this place in order to attract so many different people. But in another, he was fascinated. Through all of his travels and adventures over the last year, he'd never met a girl who saw herself as ordinary and came from a place called Arizona.

You're doing it again, a voice murmured to him. Eragon gave Saphira a small glare, then laughed in Bella's direction. "Tell me more. Is there a leader in this city of yours? Plants, wildlife? What are the people like, what do they do? Blacksmiths, tanners, farmers?" The massive amounts of learning he'd done with the elves had increased his curiousity, and he was desperate to learn more with every strange new event.

The look that crossed her face at his line of questioning was one of chagrin. Never had someone taken such an active interest in her before, and it was a little overwhelming. Sure, the kids at school had been interested in her the first day, but when they questioned her, it was superficial and in the end, they tended to do most of the talking. That kept the spotlight off her, and really, she preferred it that way. Still, she found herself answering despite that fact, a shy smile forming as she tried to go into detail about where she was from.

"Well..." She began, thinking where in his line of questions to begin. "We have blacksmiths, and farmers...tanners too I'd imagine. But... those jobs aren't...well, they're really important still, but they're not..." She paused, thinking how to describe advancements in technology. She scratched the base of her neck, picking her wet hair up off her neck gingerly and throwing it over her shoulder before continuing. "We...we have machines that do a lot of work now. People don't..." She paused, trying to think of something that people didn't do anymore. "People are still farmers, but they have machines that do most of the work. It's hard to explain." She gave him an apologetic look. "We don't have magic, we just have industry. It's the closest we've gotten to making things easier for us.'

"As for leaders, Arizona is a state in a country called the United States. It's exactly what its name says a bunch of individual groups that act independently, but are united by a governing body." She glanced at him to see if he was following or if she'd lost him. "The people in charge are all selected by a vote. Everyone gets a say." There was so much to tell and explain, so many things she loved about Arizona, so many people she could describe. They had arrived at the dorms though, and she'd stopped them in front of C. "There's more, obviously..." Her lower lip slipped in between her teeth again. "This is where your room is." She pointed behind her, handing over his key finally. "I'm in that building." She pointed. She looked down at her hands fidgeting for a moment, "I understand if you want to get settled in, but if you want to...trade stories...or something..." She shrugged, suddenly feeling awkward again. She was never very good at this type of situation. "Well, that would be nice." She glanced up at him once before turning her attention fixedly back to her hands, amending quickly, "It doesn't have to be now either. Later's good too."

Her shyness caused Eragon to smile a bit more, pleased that she wasn't some overconfident stuck up snot, like some of the girls he'd grown up with. Though he couldn't say he was exactly pleased with where circumstance had brought them, he thought he might be okay if all of the people were like this one; kind and warm and inviting. And yet Eragon still felt Saphira chiding him in his conscious, and he had to chuckle to himself.

He didn't really want to be left alone in this land of strangers. But then, with Saphira by his side, he was never exactly alone, was he? And the two of them had an awful lot to talk about. How they'd ended up here instead of Feinster, where, exactly here was, and why they could feel the conscious of almost everything around them except for their pretty, awkward tour guide. "I would like to figure a few things out," he admitted, looking towards the building she'd showed him to with a sense of dread. "Perhaps get some exploring in, too. See what we may be able to figure out." If anything. He truly, truly hated not having any understanding of how this all worked. "But I've no doubt we'll meet again. If you want to, that is." He'd all but forced Arya to hear his feelings for her, he didn't want to scare any other women the same way. Even if Arya wasn't exactly your typical woman.

"It really was lovely meeting you," he offered, his smile turning almost shy. Mentally, he scolded Saphira for laughing at him. Again. Beast. "And again, I'm sorry Saphira frightened you. I suppose when you don't even know dragons can exist, she can come as quite a shock."

Bella tried not to let her disappointment show when he said he had to figure things out. It was natural that he want to see his room, look around, and see for himself what was going on. It was purely selfish to want him to stay and keep her company. Plus, she could use a fresh change of clothes, and maybe even a hot shower to warm up. Her disappointment faded though when he asked if she'd eventually want to meet again. It wasn't exactly an 'I want to see you again', but it was good enough, as far as she was concerned. She didn't have a lot of friends back where she was from, and she wasn't sure if that would change here, so she nearly jumped when he left that option up to her. "Oh, yeah, that would be great." She said, a little too enthusiastically, having to calm herself and try again, "I mean, I'd like that a lot." She smiled sheepishly, ducking her head, embarrassed.

She looked back up when he said it was lovely meeting her, "You too." She nodded, her smile returning to match his own. "You and Saphira." She added, smiling at his companion, "And, you don't need to apologize at all, it was a shock, but she's really amazing." This was true; Bella watched the pair, her eyes lingering on Saphira. It was an incredible sight. It filled her with fear, awe, and a childlike sense of wonder. It was very real proof that all the things she'd read about as a child were possible. For a person as no-nonsense as Bella, that was both a shock and a gift. "I hope to see you both again soon, and if you need any help, or have any questions I'm in E239." She pointed toward her dorm. "Or, I'm on the journal, system...thing." Her brow furrowed then at her ineloquent description. That was about as succinct as she could think to be with the information she'd been given.

She's flirting with you, Saphira commented, a somewhat annoyed twinge to her voice. Eragon's head snapped around to glare at the dragon. Talking to me doesn't mean she's... Saphira! The dragon merely rolled her eyes skyward and began walking off towards the thick nest of trees. I'm going to see if there's anything to eat around here. That's all I need is to get sidetracked from trying to seige Feinster just to starve to death.

Eragon chuckled as he turned back to Bella, then glanced in the direction where she said her dorm was. "Perfect. I'll know where to go when this place drives me mad. And I'd like to look over this journal. I'm not exactly pleased with the idea of it, to be honest." Again, magic he didn't recognize rarely went over well with him. "Speaking of..." He looked ahead out at the rain. "You'd best hurry, I can only keep this field up for so long and it's too cold for you to go running around in this." He could probably keep it over her till she got to her appointed destination, but after that, it would be far too tiresome on him, especially with Saphira out of his sight. "I'll see you soon, then?"

It was probably for the best that Saphira and Bella couldn't communicate with one another. If she'd known what the dragon was thinking at that moment she probably would have turned a scarlet red and been unable to speak again for a minute or two. She never considered herself a flirt, and she didn't ever consciously attempt it.

As luck would have it though, Bella was blissfully unaware of the mortifying conclusions the pair had come to, and so she nodded looking up again. She'd forgotten about his spell and the reason she was no longer being rained on. Now that he reminded her she felt terrible for making him expend the extra energy. "Oh, sure." She nodded, taking a step backward. She crossed her arms over her chest and offered one last awkward smile, her eyes trailing after Saphira. "Have a great day." She said, wincing after she was done and turned before she could make a bigger fool of herself. She ducked her head and walked to her dorm as quickly as she could without falling yet again.
