Current mood: hopeful

For Sale ... cheap
WHERE: Moulin Noir
WHO: Vito Marchese, OT all
WHEN: 15 Avril 1941

Vito sat at a corner table, his back to a wall and several exit routes mapped out in his head in case something bad happened. There was a whiff of incense in the air, something from Morocco that Vito had unloaded here weeks before.

The simple fact of people in Paris was, they liked their luxuries. Good wine, incense, artworks, silverware. Whatever wasn't nailed down and gave its new owner the impression that their life wasn't completely horrid. There were goose-stepping bastards out in the street, yelling in their ugly, gutteral language, but, hey ... the wine was outstanding.

That was just gray-market stuff, though ... not illegal, just restricted and hard to find, sometimes. The black market stuff, well ...

The easiest way to find guns was stop off at a village that had just been the site of a battle, a few days or weeks before. If you had food, you could trade it for whatever weapons and ammo had been lying around and gotten picked up. Grenades for cabbages, Mausers for meat. And Vito always had produce and fish to sell.

He picked up his wineglass and swirled it, looking at its rich red color in the dim light of the club, savoring its aroma. Business was good.

Even so, there was a lot more he could be doing with his time. It was just a matter of meeting the right people.

Jackie approached the man sitting at the table.

"Well, fancy seeing you here. Mind if I have a seat?"

She took a seat, hoping the man wouldn't be offended. She didn't think he would, but she couldn't be sure.

"I'd be honored if you did," Vito said. He stood and pulled a chair out for her. "Ms. Pearson, good to see you again. How are you tonight?" He resettled when she had been seated, and took a cigarette case out of his pocket. He took one out and offered the case to Jackie.

"I'm doing well... thank you." Jackie smiled, and took a cigarette "I have to perform before long, but I wanted to say hello."

"Atmosphere's a little more relaxed, here," Vito said. He lit her cigarette, then his, with a brass Zippo. "I'm certainly looking forward to your show."

Jackie smiled.

"That's an awful nice lighter, Mr.Marchese." she said

"Yeah? You want one? They're a little scarce, but I can usually find one somewhere. They're really handy, you can use anything from brandy gasoline in 'em."

"Not so much lucky as determined and well-connected in other places," Vito said, and chuckled. "But yeah, luck does enter into it, too, I guess."

Fancy stood just inside the doorway of the Moulin Noir, and surveyed the room. Paris' hidden den of sin. She preferred her own. Perhaps it was the distance from the surface that bothered her, or the old dead romans that she'd passed on the way over, or even the eerie way the candlelight reflected in the mirror seemed to be soaked up by the wood of the bar itself. Whatever it was, this place made Fancy feel like she was mingling with the dead. Purgatory.

Welcome home Fancy.

She took a long look at all the faces she saw. Some she recognized, some she did not. The most important thing she recognized however was the clinking of glasses and smell of money. This was a place for her to do business, one way or another.

At his table, Vito caught the woman's eye and nodded, perhaps in recognition, perhaps in simple acknowledgement that they were already conspirators by the very fact of their being here, in this dim place below the surface.

Fancy returned Vito's nod, her head tilted slightly to one side as she studied him, holding his gaze. She'd seen him here before; clean cut, no nerves, not bad looking. She made her way over the the bar, casting a glance at him back over her shoulder once on her way and once again when she got there. An invitation.

Vito got up and headed over to where Fancy stood, two seats away from her, and waved down the bartender. "More of that Chateau Margaux, please," he said. He set a few big bills on the bar. "Care to join me?" he asked Fancy, not making eye contact with her, as the bartender went to get his bottle. "You look like you want to talk about something."

Fancy turned away and smirked to herself as he approached.

"Please." she smiled softly at Vito, her eyes only darting away momentarily to glance at the money he sat on the table. Fancy liked a man with money, especially one who was willing to spend it.

She noted the way he avoided her eyes.

"Perhaps. Perhaps I just want the company."

"Company's a good thing, too," Vito said with a smile. The bartender returned with a bottle, went through the ritual of uncorking and allowing Vito the first taste. Vito nodded. "Wonderful, thank you," he said. "And another glass or two, please." Vito collected these, smiled at Fancy again, and returned to his table.

Fancy's eyes narrowed at Vito, as he finished his conversation with the bartender. She was shocked and offended that he simply turned his back and walked away from her. Cocky bastard. She should, in all right just let him go. He was obviously ill company. Still, even with all his money he was awfully brazen for these times and this place. Which meant he was into something good. Or rather, something illegal. That interested Fancy, very much. She followed him back to his table, her eyes narrowly glaring at his back.

Vito settled at his table as the woman spoke to another, and poured three glasses of wine. He sensed her annoyance, but these weren't polite times they were living in. If she was only looking for a good time and a free glass of wine, she'd look elsewhere. If she was looking for something harder to come by, she'd overlook his attitude and say what was on her mind.

Having followed him to his table Fancy stood behind the chair opposite him, waiting for an invitation to sit down.

Among women, there were housecats, and then there were tigers. Vito still wasn't sure which species he was dealing with, here. He kept his expression carefully neutral, glanced at the singer onstage, then turned to Fancy again.

"Please," he said, gesturing at the chair across from his. "Have a seat, madamoiselle."

Lucy had heard about Moulin Noir from Luc, a tall lanky Parisian she had befriended. He worked at the cafe she had taken to haunting, the one down the alley that the Shadow People went to. He was nice enough, older than she by ten or so years, but not very intelligent and little knowledge of English. Lucy liked talking to him because it was helping her brush up her French. After all, she had been in Paris since December. Her once awkward and clunky pronunciation had become smoother and less offensive, but it was still obvious she was a foreigner.

It had taken a few weeks for her to discover the password to the club. Luc had missed the newest password and it took him quite a while to find out what it was. However, Lucy had it now and after wending her way through the dreadfully eerie catacombs, she was in the place and felt a bit better. It was lovely in a melancholic, Gothic sort of way, but she liked it. The blonde went to the bar and ordered a drink before looking around. She spotted Fancy a few feet away from her, looking at a man at one of the tables. Should she say hello?

"Bonsoir," she offered, not moving closer in case Fancy was busy. "Have a good time?"

Fancy felt the hair go up on her neck at the sound of Lucy's voice. She turned and gave a small smile in return.

"Bonsoir Lucy. I am." her voice was firm as she pondered the meaning of Lucy's appearance here. "Are you?" She stepped closer so as to not be over heard.

"You're a brave woman. This is a dangerous place for a reporter. Even an Allied one." she began. "Are you here on business or pleasure I wonder?"

"Strictly pleasure," Lucy replied. "When I'm off-duty, I'm off-duty." She took a sip of her drink, wondering what was so dangerous about this place. It didn't look very dangerous, and she didn't look any different than most of the attendants. Perhaps she should leave?

"I am enjoying the music, yes," she continued, her eyes flicking toward the stage.

Jackie was just finishing up another song when Lucy glanced at the stage.

She was the colored American singer, who traveled all over Europe to sing. She stood out, and tended to distract people when she was around- and now, this woman was headed for the table, where she had been sitting earlier.

"Well.. hello." Jackie smiled. She felt safe in this club- up on the surface, she'd go into a corner, and hope they didn't take too much outside interest in her. Here, she felt like she could join in at the table. "I'm just going to have a seat during my break... hope you don't mind."

"This toast is to new friends... new connections and new alliances."

She said it so that just the people at the table could hear her- though she felt safe in this place. It was the only place in the city that she felt safe.
