"Good morning," Marie called cheerfully as the woman came inside. She had just settled behind the counter, and was wiping a bit of flour off her hands.
Two display cases, once much fuller than they were today, still held a fairly good assortment breads and sweet rolls and croissants. A few small cakes were off to one side, decorated with pretty swirls of icing to disguise the fact that they didn't contain nearly as much sugar as they once would have.
