Adi was amazed at how easy it was for them to get an apartment as nice as the one that they got. Parts of the city were in complete ruin, and there were plenty of people who had been waiting for housing longer than they, but they were given a fully furnished apartment right away. He didn't want to think about where the furniture had come from, but he knew that either the former occupants had left it there after probably being deported, or it had been moved from other apartments where the same had been done.
He worried about leaving Viveka alone at home every day as well. He feared the police running into his office, telling him that his wife had been arrested. Next would surly come his own arrest as well, unless they were stupid enough to think that he hadn't known. They wouldn't be that stupid, not that it would matter anyway. He wouldn't lie about what he knew.
As soon as he saw Viveka, though, all of these worries and thoughts vanished from his mind. He smiled warmly at her, leaning down to kiss her on the cheek. "Hello, darling," he said as he walked through the door. He set his briefcase down beside the door and, after taking off his hat and coat and hanging it up, shut the door behind him. "How was your day?"
