Home sweet home...
Who: Viveka and Adi
When: dinner time April 06, 1941
Where: their home
Summary: Getting settled in their new place

Viveka could hardly believe their good fortune. Not only had Adi been assigned to Paris, which got them out of Germany, but he'd been alloted a small home. The place had quite a bit of exterior damage from the invasion, and it hadn't been lived in for quite some time so it was dusty and in some disrepair - but it felt like a palace to her. She tried not to think too hard about who the previous occupants had been - why they had left behind everything from couches to dishes. That they didn't have to try and find so many things was another stroke of luck. Though Adi's ration card was good, she worried every time she had to use her own. If they checked the records too carefully, someone might find a discrepancy - that the card on file lacked some bit of crucial information. The papers had been carefully done, and Adi had paid quite a tidy sum for the silence of those who had created them - but still. She worried.

She tried to keep that worry from clouding her thoughts as she prepared dinner for her husband who was due home from work any moment now. Adi was what made all this bearable- and Adi had so many burdens to bear already. She didn't want to upset him. When she heard the door, she smiled and called warmly "Welcome home, love..."

Adi was amazed at how easy it was for them to get an apartment as nice as the one that they got. Parts of the city were in complete ruin, and there were plenty of people who had been waiting for housing longer than they, but they were given a fully furnished apartment right away. He didn't want to think about where the furniture had come from, but he knew that either the former occupants had left it there after probably being deported, or it had been moved from other apartments where the same had been done.

He worried about leaving Viveka alone at home every day as well. He feared the police running into his office, telling him that his wife had been arrested. Next would surly come his own arrest as well, unless they were stupid enough to think that he hadn't known. They wouldn't be that stupid, not that it would matter anyway. He wouldn't lie about what he knew.

As soon as he saw Viveka, though, all of these worries and thoughts vanished from his mind. He smiled warmly at her, leaning down to kiss her on the cheek. "Hello, darling," he said as he walked through the door. He set his briefcase down beside the door and, after taking off his hat and coat and hanging it up, shut the door behind him. "How was your day?"

"Quiet," Viveka said. Thankfully quiet. Soon enough she would doubtlessly grow restless, and need to venture out to do... something. But right now, it calmed her nerves just to have a quiet place to be in.

"I did some washing, and mended the curtains- then read a while before starting dinner. We had a bit of sausage left, and I made some potato soup and there's fresh bread..."

She smiled, and started dishing out the soup - ready just in time. "And how was your day?"

He couldn't help but be glad that her day had been quiet. It was better to for it to have been quiet than for some neighbor to have been too nosy. He would like her to be able to make friends eventually, but first they needed to figure out the people around them.

"Sausage and potato soup sound fantastic, actually." He made his way to the kitchen and settled down at the dinner table. "My day went as well as can be expected. I did more figuring out where everything was than any actual work. I'll be glad once I'm settled in."

"And then you can impress them with your brilliant architectural work," Viveka said, pausing to plant a kiss on her husband's forehead before taking her seat across the table from him.

"And of course, you've got plenty to practice on here in our new home.. did you see the porch? I swear, it's being held up by sheer force of will."

"I do have plenty to practice on at home, don't I?" As soon as he got settled into his job, he was planning on starting the project of the porch. He didn't want Viveka to step onto it one day and have it give way, causing her to get hurt. "I should be able to start on the porch once I get a day off."

"Oh, that would be a good place to start," Viveka agreed. "The way those boards creak is unnerving."

She dipped a bit of bread into her soup, then chewed on it thoughtfully. "You know," she offered when finished chewing, "if we could get a bit of paint from somewhere, I could touch up some of the rooms in here during the day while you work."

She wanted to do her part to help.

He ate some of his soup, thinking for a moment. "I'm sure that I can get you some paint for at least one or two rooms. Are there any colors that you would like." Being an architect did have a few perks. Getting a few extra building supplies happened to be one of them.

"The bedroom would be nice in blue," Viveka said, smiling. "And the living room in a nice green, to match the sofa some, in case we have company--"

She stopped herself, frowning at that thought. Of course they wouldn't have company over. Having company over would be a bad thing, wouldn't it? They had to be careful. "It would match the sofa."

He frowned for a moment. He knew that she had to be incredibly lonely here in this apartment by herself all day long. "Once we're more settled and we know people better, then maybe we can have company," he offered. Of course, what he meant was once he figured out who would ask the least questions about his wife. Of course, they really had no reason at this time to ask questions. It would only be if one of them did something suspicious would anyone think to question anything about them. "I'm fairly certain I can get you those colors, though."

"Do you think... it would be okay to have company?"

Even though they were alone, with no possibility of being overheard, she lowered her voice out of habit. "It might be good for your work to make friends, and I suppose it would be ... strange, if we didn't have any friends..."

She didn't want them to be suspiciously unapproachable, either. That wouldn't do.

He understood her need to lower her voice. He tended to do it himself when their conversations turned this way. One never knew how much the neighbors could hear through the walls. "It may be fine to have company eventually. It would look suspicious if we never entertained or never accepted invitations. We just have to be extra careful."

Viveka nodded. "Yes, I understand. And we should likely also practice our French - just from the standpoint of it will help us to communicate with the locals here. I know you speak well, but I think I might be a little rusty..."

She hadn't had much opportunity to study since things went bad. "Plus, it will be fun, don't you think? French is after all still the language of romance..."

She smiled, and leaned across the table. "Think of all the romantic things we can say to each other in our new, soon-to-be-blue bedroom."

"We should practice our French more." The more that they blended in, the better. He smiled at her when she brought up the bedroom. "It will be fun to practice there, but I don't know how good that will do for interacting with others, except to work on pronunciation." And how to focus with...distractions. "It would be very romantic, though."

Viveka smiled, and got up to start clearing away the dishes. "Oh, this is true- we should maybe just have every day conversations. We could pretend to be meeting people on the street, or purchasing a loaf of bread or whatever. Less fun, but more practical I'm sure..."

"Yes, it would be practical to practice all of those things. They would help us both a lot in the time to come." He smiled at her. "Of course, practicality isn't everything."

"So let us do both, then," Viveka said. She left the dishes in the sink - there was no need to do them now, when she would have all day tomorrow with nothing but time for housework and trivialities. Right now, she wanted to enjoy the company of her Adi.

She walked over to him, and put her arms around him, and kissed both his cheeks. "Darling, I think we're going to be fine here. After all, we've got each other.. and that's the most important thing."

He wrapped his arms around her as well. "That is the most important thing. I don't know what I'd do without you." He'd be miserable and alone. He knew exactly how he would be. When she contacted him, he knew that he could do nothing else but bring her to him.

"Without you, I'd be..."

Viveka couldn't finish the sentence. It brought to mind thoughts of her family. When Adi had come for her, he'd only been able to secure papers for her. She didn't want to leave her family behind - but her father had insisted she go, that he would take her mother and grandparents and flee. They had old friends in the countryside who would surely help them hide until this madness was over.

Naturally, there was no word from them. It would be too risky. But she still worried. When she thought how close all of them had come to death...

Viveka shivered, and held her husband closer. "Every day, I thank you with all my heart."

He pulled her closer when he realized where her thoghts were turning. He had wanted to be able to help her family as well, but he could only afford the papers for her. They had reasured her that they had somewhere to hide. He only could hope that they made it. "There's no need to thank me. I would do it again if I had to, and more if I could."

Viveka kissed his forehead, then settled her head on his shoulder. "I think we will have a good chance here - far from where anyone knew us. And here maybe they are too busy with other things to look so closely..."

"They will be very busy here, so I think that we have little to worry about. We must be vigilant, though. We can never fully let our guard down around anyone here. I can't bear the thought of loosing you."

"And I couldn't stand if anything were to happen to you," Viveka said. "I try not to worry but- every day when you leave, it's like my heart holds its breath until you return."

He nodded. He knew exactly how she felt, because he could feel the panic in him rise to his throat everyday when he left her alone at home. He worried that someone would somehow discover Viveka during the day while he was gone. "We'll just have to be extra careful. We'll make this work."
