Dieter did try to make a point of being on time, and he was glad when it worked out (he was always mortified when he was late). Opening the door and stepping inside, he gave his new superior a quick salute, not quite daring to step too far into the room.
He was trying to know his place without asking.
"Sir," he said, and was glad that he at least didn't sound quite as nervous as he felt. "Leutnant Dieter Reinelt, reporting for duty." He thought that sounded right.
A bit cliche, sure, but what else was he to say? "Come to play secretary" just didn't have the same ring to it.
