Charlie stared at her for a moment, not noticing when she took his hand.
"I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing anymore..." he mumbled. He shook his head, then spoke clearly. "I signed a contract, and I intend to see it through. I am in this until the end, be it my end or the war's end."
He smiled softly. "Besides, I promised my father I'd make it home. He's not going to outlive his son, not in this life."
