Harry looked around at the group of men and women who'd volunteered for this mission, his expression set and his eyes dark. It wouldn't be the first time he'd led people into the Nevernever who had no experience with it before, but it would be the first time he led anyone inside without a clear path there or back.
Even when he'd stormed Arctis Tor all those years ago to rescue his friend's daughter, the Summer Lady and her Knight had helped him out. He'd had friends. He had friends now, but this felt different. They were going in without a clear goal, on the off chance that maybe Harry would find the answers he was looking for, or they'd find the people who'd gone missing.
The wizard leaned on his staff and regarded the group again. Dressed for war, they were all woefully unprepared for whatever might be on the other side of the veil between worlds. Of them, Carlos looked casually cocky, with a grin on his face and his shoulders slouched, his hand curled easily around a staff that mirrored Harry's own, the other resting on the sword at his side. He'd abandoned his grey cloak today because this was personal and the Wardens weren't involved.
“Any last minute questions?” Harry asked finally. Then he paused. “If anything inside offers you anything don't accept it. Never make deals with Faeries. They always win.” And if you reneged on your end of the bargain that gave them the necessary permission to do whatever the hell they pleased with you. Harry really, really hoped they weren't about to step into Faerie.
“Alright then. Stay together, eyes alert, be cautious, and keep moving. No matter what, don't stop or turn back because there won't be a Way back out. Carlos, in the rear with Li-Ming, close up behind us.” Carlos saluted.
“Me first, give me a second to check out our surroundings before following. I'll make some light.” His eyes moved over Texas, who was currently being occupied by Bob. No one could see it, but Harry had given the spirit permission earlier to ride along with her, protect her, and help her during this mission if it became necessary.
Harry's eyes traveled around the rest of the group again, assembled there behind Starlin’s.
“Hey,” Carlos said lightly, “think we're gonna get fired from our jobs for running off in the middle of them?”
Harry eyed him briefly, annoyed, then turned his back on the group and gathered up his storm of energy, raised his hand in a slashing motion and said, “Apartum,” and opened a hole in the universe. It didn't look like much at first, but the rapidly growing split, light around the edges like a paper on fire, parted into an opening the size of a doorway. Harry looked through into the dark expanse. There was no light in Knowhere. They'd be going dark in the Nevernever, too.
Gritting his teeth, Harry stepped forward before he lost his nerve and stepped through the Way onto the other side.
He dropped.
For a heart stopping moment he thought he'd made a stupid decision and was going to splat on the ground in thirty seconds, then his feet hit and he splashed into a two foot puddle of foul smelling stuff , “Ugh,” he groused, then looked up at the vague shape of his Way above his head before he looked around. So far, so good. He walked a few feet through the mess and paused. Pulling out his necklace, Harry raised a brief flash of blue white light.
Now or never guys. Once they were inside there was no going back.
