What: Kara's looking to check up on Barry after the fight.

Rating/Warnings: We'll say high for the very brief and tiny mention of suicide and a little about people being hurt.
Status: Completed Log
The battle, as bad as it was, had allowed Kara to focus on something that had nothing to do with Mon-El, to push the sadness she had been feeling aside for the time being. Part of her was wondering if the pain was ever going to go away; however, she had people here who knew her and a few she knew herself, making it easier to deal with the whole kidnapped in space plus she had made the choice she wasn’t going to focus on the sadness. It wasn’t going to bring Mon-El back, and sadness was only going to make her sink further into a hole until it would be harder to pull herself out. Instead, Kara found focusing on other things made everything a little better, and for now, it was going to be her way of dealing.
With the fight over, Kara had gone back to being Kara Danvers rather than Supergirl. It had been a few days since everything had been a little crazy, and Kara was feeling like things were slowly getting back to normal or as normal as she assumed it would ever be here. Only problem was she hadn’t heard from Barry in a few days, which it was one thing when they were on two different Earth’s, but not a word from him while in the same space head? Something about that felt a bit off, especially since he had ended up with an injury while out on the field, and she hoped he would take a few minutes let her know how he was doing or come see her since she figured he would be out of medical by now, but nothing? Maybe it was because she was used to the people from her world, but Barry was a friend and she worried about her friends.
Deciding the best person to ask was Caitlin, figuring maybe she’d have a better idea on where Barry was and how he was doing. Maybe it was nothing and it had slipped Barry’s mind, but Kara wanted to make sure after knowing he had been hurt while on the field. Heading for medical, Kara wasn’t even sure if Caitlin was on the clock or not, but she was hoping for the best right now. Entering into medical, Kara’s eyes widened at the sight of Barry. Well, that had been a very easy mission!
“I don’t know about in this universe, but I know in mine being in medical isn’t a good thing,” Kara joked slightly to take the edge off a bit, moving over to stand on one side of him. “What happened? Are you okay?” Her tone laced with worry, unsure what was wrong with him other than he was here in medical meaning it had to be something.
****
The space sickness had shown up for him in a strange way, which probably had to do with a lot of the fact that he wasn’t healing right anymore. He wasn’t able to keep track of his food intake very well on the space head without Cisco to make up some kind of diet plan when the protein bars gave out. He was a scientist but his discipline was different than food science. He didn’t know every aspect of science as it was pretty broad.
The one thing he did know was that he felt like he failed. Shepard was injured, Francis had gotten it too, and now he was stuck in medical worrying Caitlin with some other stupid injury that he should have been able to avoid had everything been working properly. He was irritated to say the least. So no, he hadn’t said anything to anyone after the battle wrapped up. He didn’t particularly want to. It was probably irrational to be as angry as he was about it all, and yet there he was just stewing in it while he tried to rest. He wasn’t able to help anyone. Thoughts of quitting this whole Flash thing entered his mind again as he let his eyes slide shut for a moment to rest. Maybe sleep would make those feelings better.
Sleep was hard to come by, his resting was a restless one when a voice broke through his downward spiraling thoughts and he glanced over in it’s direction. “Sure. Hanging around medical is fun, join the party.” He tried for humor, but it was probably a little off. The exhaustion in his eyes a little more visible than he’d have liked.
****
A mind reader wasn’t needed to know something was wrong with Barry. Kara considered him one of her best friends; however, she couldn’t hang out with him as much as she sometimes wished they could. The whole being on two different Earth’s made that plan a little harder on the socializing side of things. One thing was for sure whatever was going on in his head, it was causing a look on Barry to show that she had never seen before on him. Kara hated seeing her friends not looking good, she wanted to help them, and make everything better, but that wasn’t always possible.
Kara could tell he was attempting to try with a joke, making her hope by using it, he would relax a bit. “I knew I should have stopped to grab something for the party,” it wasn’t the best joke since he was avoiding her question, but she’d let it go for now. Adding in his look of exhaustion, which reminded her of Winn when he was trying to balance more than he should and losing sleep because of it. Knowing that look, it made her a little more worried about Barry than she already had been at the sight of him in medical.
“You going to tell me what happen or am I going to have to guess? Because let me tell you I have a very creative imagination and you really don’t want to open that door with what I think happened,” a hint of a small smile on her lips, hoping maybe for a reaction of the good kind. Was it going to happen? Probably not, but it was worth a try while also seeing if maybe he’ll tell her without the guessing.
****
At that comment he gave a half smirk, but it faded fairly quickly. His usual attempt at glowing positivity was dim, and it wasn’t a side of himself he liked. He didn’t want to show it off to his friends, so he’d stayed in medical and just stewed a bit. The bat themed friends had things of their own to deal with, Shepard was in rough shape in the next room, and Francis had also found his way back to medical as well. What had he contributed to any of that? Nothing. He may have smiled, kept up the mask of being the normal well balanced one but he was feeling the crushing weight of the world just then more than ever.
“I couldn’t do anything for them. I can’t do anything for Iris. I’m tired Kara.” He couldn’t talk to anyone and he was just tired. The burden of the speed force was a heavy one, and he felt much older than he was. Sometimes he forgot who he was outside of the mask until things like this happened. Until he looked at Shepard lying there and reimagined the night his mother had been murdered all over again. Somehow seeing her there made him feel small again, only this time he didn’t have Joe to fall back on.
He could feel a tightness in his chest, but he just tried to ignore it.
****
For a moment, he had a small smirk, and that was a small win in her book. Wasn’t much, but it would do for now. Baby steps were the best approach right now, and taking it slow since Kara could tell something was wrong. Though when he started to open up a bit, her heart broke since it made her feel like she had been slacking as a friend to know something wasn’t wrong sooner. Yes, she had been dealing with the loss of Mon-El, but that was no excuse.
Kara went to hug him, reminding herself in her head to keep her strength in check. It was one thing when it was a normal hug with no big reason for it, but when concerned, worried, or excitement came into the mix, she had to always remind herself briefly. He was already in medical, she'd prefer not to hurt him even more because of a hug. Without even saying anything at first, she hugged him, trying to comfort her friend. “Barry, it’s okay. You could have come talk to me sooner,” She told him, letting go of him slowly. Pulling back, she looked at him with the worry over him written all over her face because she knew to a certain degree what he was feeling.
“Can’t do anything for who? What happened with Iris? Is that why you’re tired because you’re feeling like you can’t do anything for them?” It was moments like this where Kara hated they weren’t from the same world. Maybe she’d already have some answers and could be giving helpful advice only instead she had to get some context for the situation.
****
Honestly even if she had been a little too harsh with the hug he probably wouldn’t have complained. It’d been a long time since he’d actually been hugged at all like that. Hugs were welcome. He didn’t blame her for not noticing, he was pretty decent at keeping stuff from people these days, for better or worse. He was just trying to survive the giant space head and not go too insane by thinking about it all the time, but now it caught up with him.
“When I left home Iris had 24 hours left. I’ve literally done everything to stop it from happening, but there isn’t any way. I can’t stop it or change it, and now Shepard is in there looking the same and I can’t do anything for her either. It’s all the same. What you said about losing? Yeah. Story of my life.” He was just worn out, the superheroing thing had finally taken it’s toll.
****
Listening to what was going on with Iris, and adding in how he was feeling because of this mission, it hurt her to see him like this. “Move over a little,” she sat on the edge of his bed and looked down at him. “I know what I said about us losing, but I was angry and upset; however, I don’t think it always has to be the case.” Maybe it was the hopeful side of her. Maybe it was because she had to believe her cousin could keep his happiness along with everyone else even while she had to lose it. There was no way she could get Mon-El back, but she refused to let someone she cared about lose their happiness if she could help it.
Kara bit her bottom lip for a moment, unsure about asking the question before deciding it was worth a try, “What happens to Iris in 24 hours?” There had to be a way to stop it, Kara refused to believe that was it, especially when it came to Barry and Iris. “Do you think Shepard would want to hear you talking like this? You might be the fastest man alive, but you can’t be everywhere at once. No one can, it isn’t possible.” She told him with a small sigh since she had this feeling so many times, and had to be talked down by her friends and her sister, this time it was her turn for someone else.
Already knowing the answer to the question, she had to hear what he thought, “When you were out on the field, were you giving it your all?”
****
He couldn’t move too much without grimacing in pain, but he did give her a little room. He wasn’t healing right so it wasn’t helping in the least with his mental state of things either. “Iris dies. No matter what I do to the future to change it, she dies. I’m responsible.” There was literally no telling him he wasn’t. It was because of Flashpoint, somewhere in his mind he knew it. His events there had finally altered too many lives, and now Iris was going to suffer for his stupid mistake too. There was literally nothing he could do about it and it broke his heart. “Isn’t it though?...I tried to save my mom in Flash Point, this..alternate timeline I created. I lived in it for a while, got to see both my parents. One alive, the other not rotting away in prison..they told me to do it. My team, to do something for me. I tried to save them.” He hadn’t really told anyone about the events in Flashpoint, he hadn’t been able to. Cisco feared the butterfly effect, and it made sense. Barry had kept it all in. Even what Thawne had made him to do to correct it. “I had to reset it all to try to fix it. Things...started falling apart. I had to tell Thawne to murder my mom again. I had to get my dad arrested for it again. I had to watch it all happen for god knows how many times now all again.” He was tired. Mentally, physically, he was just worn down.
He wasn’t allowed to be happy, so why should that change in the giant space head? “I’m supposed to just be able to handle all this.” He hadn’t even been given a second to grieve over things since before their own alien invasion. “That alien invasion? Was my fault. The one back home.” He shook his head a bit as he folded his arms a bit uncomfortably, these were things he’d never actually said out loud. Things he didn’t realize were still weighing down on him.
“If I was..it didn’t change anything. Shepard’s still there.” Nothing he did changed anything, Barry felt like he was just barely hanging onto things, but he shook his head and forced himself to smile slightly. “I probably shouldn’t have said any of that.”
****
A frown slipped over her lips at him grimacing in pain, feeling bad about having him move even a little, but she only needed a tiny spot. Yes, she could have gone to grabbed a chair; however, with the way he was looking and talking, she wanted to stay by his side right now. Hearing what happened to Iris, she couldn’t even imagine how he was feeling right now. The idea the woman he loved was going to die, she couldn’t picture herself in those shoes. “Why are you responsible? And okay, for the sake of this discussion we will say you’re responsible, I know you because I’d be doing the same thing, you’ve probably been trying to fix it yourself?” She asked, resting one of her hands on his arm as a form of comforting him. This couldn’t be easy to say aloud and even if she couldn’t help, she could make sure he knew he wasn’t alone. Listening to what happened in this different universe, she didn’t envy him at all. It had been hard enough walking away from the dream world where her parents were alive, facing the reality, but this was different. “I’m so sorry, Barry. No one should have to do that. I can’t help with what happened in that universe, I wish I could, but I can help in trying to find a way to help Iris,” she offered him, hoping he would accept the help. Maybe with them working on this together, they could come up with something. If she could save Barry’s happiness, then she’d be happy because the idea of them both losing their happy endings was not something she would allow.
Kara wanted to hug him tight, but she didn’t want to give him the chance to stop because then she might not get him to finish talking about what was on his mind. “None of us are perfect, Barry. Yes, we’re superheroes, but we’re human....well okay, not on my end....you know where I’m going with this though,” she waved her hand getting off topic from her point with the rambling, “Oliver probably made mistakes, you made some, and I know I’ve made plenty. We own them, learn from them, and it helps us for later on down the road. Did you cause that alien invasion? Yes; however, you did whatever you could to fix the mistake even if it meant being a big idiot on trying to give yourself over to them. If it hadn’t been for you, then I’d have stayed under their control, and just imagine the damage,” she pointed out to him. It was the truth, Kara didn’t want to think about the damage she could have caused for his world if he hadn’t fixed the matter.
Tilting her head slightly, she shook her head at him. “That isn’t how that works, Barry! Only one blaming you is you, and by doing that you’re going to drive yourself crazy with overthinking everything.” Kara shook her head quickly, shifting in her spot. “No, don’t think that! Friends are there for one another and share what’s wrong, you’re always welcomed to be open with me, okay?” Last thing she needed was for him to close up, thinking he was piling too much or he didn’t have anyone to talk with about this, Kara didn’t want him to think that at all.

Barry still had a pretty nasty wound since his powers weren’t working properly. It meant speed healing was basically non existent and he felt bad. It meant Cait was likely stressing herself to the point of more weird white hair. Sure she’d seen him end up in the cortex injured, but he’d always rapidly healed for the most part. But every so often for good measure it seemed, Caitlin would show up and give him a lecture on being reckless or something. ‘It’s because of Flashpoint. What I did. I know it now. It’s my fault she’s going to die because I’m the one going to kill her.” It was an impossibly difficult situation for anyone not familiar with weird speed force things to understand, so he frowned a little and paused as the wound on his stomach protested at even his simple movements. “Rather, a version of me I created...a time remnant. Someone left over from Flashpoint and outcast because he wasn’t me. His Iris died too, for him to survive on my Earth mine also needs to..all this is because I tried for one brief shining moment to be happy.” He shook his head some and laughed though it wasn’t a genuine one. More sad than anything.
When she started talking again he was glad. He wasn’t sure what she’d think of him after what he told her, so the temporary distraction of her talking instead was good. “I haven’t told Caitlin any of this. I don’t really know how.” Caitlin was one of his best friends, but he didn’t want to be the cause of any more pain on her end. “It’s hard to talk about in general. Everyone expects I know how to handle all these things, but I don’t. “
****
Her eyes widened at hearing it was going to be him or a version of him that killed Iris. The idea of any Barry killing Iris was unbelievable, but she knew he wouldn’t lie and he would only say this if he knew it was true. “How did his Iris die? Or do you not know?” She asked, shaking her head as she moved off the side of the bed, wrapping her arms around him in a hug. Kara could tell this wasn’t easy for him to talk about, and she was surprised by him telling her all this; however, she was glad to know he trusted her, understanding now why he was feeling the way he was. Pulling back after a moment, she nodded her head firmly like it was settled, “I’m going to help you find a way to save her. There has to be a way and I’ll come to your universe to help if need be, but I’m not going to let you lose what you and Iris have because some other you is a jerk....no offense,” she made a face realizing that came out sounding so wrong on calling him a jerk. “I mean you’re not a jerk, you’re amazing, but this version of you is a jerk. I’ll shut up now,” she wanted to kick herself because her mouth did what it was known for doing best and that was opening and not shutting when it should. Kara was determined to find a way somehow to fix this, and she wouldn’t stop until she either found one or she went through every option possible until she found nothing, even then she probably wouldn’t stop.
The fact he hadn’t told Caitlin this had her a little unsure since Kara knew she was his best friend. “Is it because she doesn’t want to know things she doesn’t know already or you don’t want to put this on her?” If it was the first one, then she understood and it was the right thing to do since it was respecting her wishes. “I don’t know if everyone expects that, but I don’t expect you to because how do you handle something like this? Even more so when you’re not talking to your friends about it. Which for the record,” she started pointing at him with a raised eyebrow, “if you weren’t hurt and I didn’t have super strength I would hit you for not talking to someone about this!” That was one thing she was serious on and anyone who knew her knew she wouldn’t actually hurt anyone on purpose with her abilities when they were her friends, but she could make the threat.

“Jason and Tim know too, they keep saying I can’t be a part of the plan. This other me that calls himself Savitar knows everything I know. Essentially he is me. Killing myself won’t work, he’ll just find some other way to leave a mark.” Eddie had already done that and they’d learned the hard way. He hated that he even had to think of that option, it wasn’t like he was intentionally suicidal or anything but if it was to save someone he loved more than life itself he’d do anything to make that happen. He was desperate at that point. Nothing had been working. Trips to the future, trips to the past, the event remained. He’d learned after dealing with his mom that some events were just static in time, he was starting to think this was one and it was damn near heart breaking. Without Iris there was no Flash. She was what drove him to continue to wake up everyday and fight. Barry actually did laugh a little at that comment and didn’t fight the hug at all. Kara had been one of the few brave enough to touch him recently save for Iris of course-but she wasn’t there anymore. He hesitantly at first returned it.
“Whatever plan you guys do come up with...I think Tim might have a point. I don’t think I can know about it either.” He really hoped that knowledge from this place would follow them home, but he wasn’t sure it would. “I don’t want to put it on her. When I’m from..she’s...not with the team anymore.” He shook his head slightly, he didn’t want her to know that either honestly. He was glad to see her, he didn’t want that to end. Wincing slightly at that comment he gave a faint smile. “I know I know. I just...have these rules. Things the Speed Force has told me and things I’ve told myself. Old habits I suppose.” Oh yeah, the speed force was kind of an entity. So that was also a new thing. Welcome to the weird world of Speedsters, Supergirl. You asked.
****
“No, I agree with them on how probably better if you weren’t apart of the plan. Even if killing you would work, not happening!” Kara was making sure the idea was off the table. Not happening! She wasn’t allowing that idea to cross anyone’s mind, thankfully it wouldn’t work, but she wasn’t even allowing it to be thought about. They would find another way to save Iris without that idea because Kara knew he would do it, if it worked, to save Iris, she saw how he was willing to give himself up to the Aliens to save everyone, but now to save Iris? He wouldn’t even think twice about it cause she’d do the exact same thing if it was Alex. “Nice to hear a laugh from you,” it wasn’t much, but it was a small start, hoping maybe the small laugh was a good sign.
Nodding, she had to say she agreed with Tim. Since this was Barry...well a version of Barry and what he just told her, she figured the best way to handle this was to keep him out of the idea. “Since I don’t want them thinking I’m forcing my way into helping with a plan, you should probably tell them I want to help in trying to figure out a way to save Iris.” Kara knew she had a habit at times with being a little pushy even if it was with good reason, but she was really trying to keep herself in check. A confused look showed up on her face, unsure why Caitlin wasn’t with the team, and she almost asked, but that wasn’t her business unless he wanted to share it with her. “Maybe you should give her the option? If she wants to know, then tell her, and if she doesn’t, then don’t. But she should be given the option on whether she wants to know or not, but hey, it’s your choice,” she quickly added the last bit, not wanting him to think she was forcing him into telling her anything. A sigh left her lips, she knew where he was coming from on the rules. “No matter, I’m always here to listen even if I might not understand the issue completely, I’m still here.” Kara was still learning about the life of a Speedster; however, she was picking it up slowly, especially with the more time she spent around him. At the same time, the more she learned, the more she felt for what he dealt with as a Speedster.
****
He really hated the fact that he couldn’t be in on said plan it was Iris. Since day one Joe had told him above all else, keep Iris safe. Not that Joe even had to tell him, Barry would have done it with or without prompting. Iris was his first love, and he felt helpless in saving her right now. “We’re engaged you know. “ Kara would definitely have gotten an invite to the wedding, but they couldn’t even bring themselves to fill out any invitations. They hadn’t done a single wedding planning thing, Barry hadn’t even thought of picking a best man-though sitting there with Kara the answer in his mind was pretty obvious. The person he missed most from home was Cisco. Cisco had become like his brother and he wanted him at his side if he got a choice in the future. Giving her a tired smile he laid back again against the bed, longing to get out of the hospital. “Never had to heal from something like this for so long.” He commented idly. It seemed like telling Kara, at least discussing it had helped a little. Saying the words out loud that he’d never spoken before was helpful.
“I can talk to them if you want.” He didn’t mind telling them he told Kara about the things going on back home, she was the one closest to him. Kara was the one who knew him best there aside from Caitlin. “I don’t know.” Maybe one day he’d tell Caitlin, but right now he didn’t have the energy. He allowed himself to lean against her lightly, trying not to hurt his injury even more. He was trying to let himself lean on people, but nearly a decade of not doing it out of fear that he might lose them if he told them everything that went on in his head had made it difficult.
****
Kara’s eyes widened, looking so excited, having to fight the urge to hug him tight because the news of him being engaged was amazing. Made her even more determined to find a way to save Iris so the two could get married. “Oh my god, really?!?!? That’s great, and once you’re out of here and feeling better, we’re celebrating! Because everything will work out, and you two will get married, and yes, this is happening,” she wasn’t taking no for an answer on that. Kara was determined everything would work out, she refused to believe they were both meant to end in sadness. Her? Fine, she’d deal with the sadness. Barry? Nope, not happening, she’d do whatever to make sure he had his happy ending even if it meant dragging this other version of Barry to another planet. “Yeah, it’s hard to go back once you’re used to the healing quickly, but I know you can handle it even if you might drive Caitlin nuts in the process,” she pointed out, knowing how the guys were giving her a workout with the trying to escape from the medical section.
“Yeah, probably best, and I’ll be happy to work with them on trying to figure something out. Three heads working on a plan with different ways of thinking, we have to come up with something,” her tone sounded like it would happen without a doubt, but on the inside, she was scared of the what if, pushing that aside. Kara wasn’t going to allow failure on this, she failed with saving Mon-El, which meant she had to have a win when it came to someone and their happiness, right? Probably didn’t work that way, but she was hoping. “It’s up to you, but I told you my thoughts on it, and it’s your choice in the end.” It was where she left the whole Caitlin thing, knowing this wasn’t her choice because it wasn’t her story to tell. When he leaned against her, she moved one arm to wrap around his shoulder carefully. “You look tired, do you want me to go so you can get some sleep?” She offered, knowing sleep was a great thing for injured people and didn’t want him trying to stay up when sleep would be good for him.
****
Barry gave her a faint smile, unsure if he really felt like celebrating since he couldn’t even see his fiance, but the excitement was welcome. He hadn’t even really had time to be excited about it on their Earth. “We haven’t even celebrated it yet back home honestly, so maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea...” Iris hadn’t really wanted to, and neither had he until Savitar was finished off. “Your name was on the short list of invites.” He mentioned. Of course he hadn’t forgotten people like Oliver and Kara. They were some he considered his best friends. “I probably am. It’s boring in here.” He admitted, Caitlin had doctor stuff to do so she wasn’t exactly around as much as he was used to for his own entertainment-and he didn’t blame her. He just missed her a bit.
He actively hated that he couldn’t be a part of whatever plan they came up with. Even more so he didn’t even know if it would matter. What if they went back home and none of it worked out? Or he forgot it all. Not that he wanted to he just wasn’t sure he’d actually have much choice.
****
Hearing he hadn’t had a chance to celebrate his engagement back on Earth was sad, then again with what he was telling her, it made sense cause more important things seemed to be going on than a celebration. “This could be your chance to celebrate it here, then once the issue is dealt with you can celebrate it back home. Consider it a way to have two celebrations,” she offered. Kara refused to think there was no possible way to save Iris, someone had to have a way for it to happen. A smile showed up on her lips, feeling honored to know she would be invited to the event, already planning on somehow finding a way to make sure her city was taken care of for a short time so she could go to the other Earth for the event.
“I know, but it’s for the best until you’re feeling better. How about I stop by tomorrow and bring you something to do so you’re not bored? Then once you’re better, you can decide how you want to celebrate being engaged,” she figured maybe giving him that would keep his mind busy with trying to decide how he would want to celebrate the occasion and keep his mind off being in medical. “But you also need to promise me no more hiding when something is wrong, alright? Doesn’t have to be me you talk with it could be Jason, Caitlin, or any of us but you talk to someone because you shouldn’t deal with this yourself. You have friends who worry and love you so use them when you need them,” she told him with a stern look to show she meant business on this.
****
That was half the problem with only really having super hero type friends. He knew some of them probably wouldn’t be able to make it due to having their own cities to protect. Honestly Barry wasn’t giving it much thought considering they might not even make it anyway. He was actually trying not to get his hopes up. Every time he did that it ended in disappointment. He didn’t want this to go south too. “Lets just..not plan too much yeah?” He asked cautiously, not really wanting to be pushed further about it. “One step at a time. First let me get out of here.”
Barry wasn’t too big on celebrations of things, everyone he’d been to had been interrupted by something terrible, he preferred to keep thing on the low key. Less risk of some ridiculous thing happening to ruin it. He couldn’t help but give her a faint smile to match her stern look. Kara was one of the few he might listen to with that look, she could physically sit on him if she wanted and he wouldn’t be going anywhere for a good while if she put her strength into it. “Okay okay. I promise I’ll try.” Not entirely the same, but he would at least make an effort.
****
“You got it. We won’t plan too much, but I still say everything will be fine,” she told him, but Kara could understand the not plan too much. Even though she was determined to make sure things went well for him, she knew there was that what if hanging around. “Well, you’ll get out of here sooner as long as you rest and listen to Caitlin without any arguments. Don’t be stubborn!” She teased slightly before giving him a very small smile.
Hearing how he’ll try, she knew it was the best she would get, and it was better than nothing. “Good because you have friends around here who care about you,” she patted his arm before starting to head for the door. “Get some sleep and I’ll come check on you tomorrow to see how you’re doing,” she gave him a final smile before leaving and heading back to her place, hoping things would get better for Barry because she hated seeing someone she considered one of her best friends hurting like he was.
