They reopened and Cas removed his hand.
He had done his best to remove anything internal, anything deeper than muscle. Cuts, scrapes and bruises had been left behind for the doctors to observe, to urge to healing. Sure, it might take some explaining, but perhaps the doctors were so wrapped up in other patients, they might believe that they'd over-estimated the severity of Sam's wounds.
"Dean was worried about you." That was an understatement. At least the older Winchester wouldn't have to worry so much now.
