My dad came up with it, all praise should go to him really. Honestly it's much more likely he just went 'yeah, it'll work'.
Oh heck no I don't mind it's just...a story. Alright so in 2148 we found something on Mars. Before that we'd been slowly colonizing the other planets but on Mars we found technology we later knew to call Prothean Technology. It allows us to figure out mass effect fields, and gets us faster then light travel which lets us explore Sol. About a year later we figure out Charon, Pluto's moon, isn't a moon at all. While not a fully functioning battlestation it is revealed that it's something we call a Mass Relay. It allows us to leave Sol, unfortunately one of the first things we find out that yes there are aliens and they aren't particularly happy about seeing us. The First Contact War begins, but we eventually end the war and get introduced to the wider galaxy and it's various species. We get made part of the Council, and even get a seat.
And in 2185 The Andromeda Initiative asks for about 100,000 volunteers of all species. My dad get's tapped to become something they call a PAthfinder, more or less the tip of the spear of exploration. Pathfinders are jack of all spades, trained for combat, biology, and if needed how to terraform planets. My mom, before she passed, developed an implant that allows SAM to neurally interface with Pathfinders. I have one of those implants. Due to events that happened when we arrived in Andromeda my dad didn't make it and transferred Pathfinder Protocols to me. I did not react well, and kind of died.
The robots are called Remnant and I have very little info on them except they were made by (probably) the Jardaan and they do not like outsiders touching their things. Which would go better if the Jardaan (I think) did not install something called Vaults into planets which basically can terraform near unlivable planets into sustainable planets and are generally full of Remnant. There's more to it but that's the basics.
