Cosette opened her book and glanced toward it determined to hide the blush that crept up her cheeks as he spoke. She had promised herself she'd keep her cool while he was talking to her, but it was hard. She really liked him and now he was complimenting her. Remember, it's out of desperation, she silently reminded herself so that she wouldn't fall for it.
She drew in a deep breath and tried to force the color out of her cheeks--though she wasn't entirely sure if she was successful--before looking up at him again. "I just don't get out much," she told him. "I don't talk to very many people and frankly I'm pretty much invisible." There was no way he could argue that.
