Sherlock has actually come to accept (grudgingly, of course) that Kiseki's secrets are elusive and unreliable. He's stopped actively trying to solve it and settled for recording his experiences with it down instead. He also takes accounts of other people's experiences so that if any of those events were to repeat themselves, he's have some idea of what to expect and how to prepare for it.
As far as staying occupied, teaching has been doing a lot to keep him busy. Even when he's not lecturing his class, he's still writing lesson plans, setting up labs, etc. It's been a very good way for him to pass the time. When he isn't doing anything related to his job, Sherlock still tends to his beehive and shuts himself up in the library reading through books he's certain weren't there a few months ago.
