Before that he was largely unaware of there being any books based off of him until he found some in the library. It went about as well as you could imagine. Mostly he was offended on Watson's behalf given the period-typical sexism and racism the original novels had. He wants to say he hasn't actively sought out more material based on said books, but being who he is, of course he did. And he nit-picked them all.
Though there was a small irony that wasn't lost on him when he realized that somewhere out there, there is another him (maybe more) who did live in the past before things became so loud and overstimulating. Just like how he talks about in season two during one of his meetings. And he would like to think that maybe that's why none of his other incarnations are addicts.
