[WAR] CAPTAIN DUMBASS FALLS OFF A GIANT PILE OF RUBBLE
Who: Rose & Molly, then Rose & Jim & then Regina
When: Mid to late morning on July 9th.
Where: Med center to start, then the hospital and then the cabin
What: Kirk is an idiot and gets himself hurt. Rose maybe panics a little. Then there are some feels. And admissions of feels.
Rating: Violence, injury, sexy times, but nothing explicit
Status: Nearly complete, except for Regina's part
Rose Hathaway wasn't really prone to panicking. That was one of those things you really couldn't afford when you were a guardian. Even when an almost literal army of death descended on you, you had to be able to battle it calmly. Panicking was a good way to get yourself and others killed. That didn't mean nothing scared her, of course. That just meant that she didn't often show her fear. This was one of those rare moments, though, when she wasn't quite so calm. She'd heard that Jim had been hurt - pretty badly, it sounded like - and had barely learned about him being taken to what was currently serving as the med center (not that there was much left of it) before she took off running in that direction. Once she arrived, she found that not only was he NOT there, but that the idiots who had greeted her had no idea where he actually was. The texts she'd sent to his phone had gone unanswered, so it wasn't just that he'd been treated and sent on his way. Rose was honestly very close to panicking when she spotted Molly. That was probably good, because she was kind of close to punching someone and she hoped she would have some answers. "Where is he?" she demanded without pausing for greetings or any other pleasantries. Or elaborating on who "he" was. As far as she was concerned, it should have been obvious. Molly had had approximately twenty hours of sleep since the earthquake had happened and was running on the combination of adrenaline and caffeine that she was sure would give way any time now. She was still sharp enough to focus on the people who were coming for medical help, which was thankfully less people than each previous day. It almost seemed as if she was back in medical school. But she was not so brain addled that she did not recognize a ruckus when she heard one, and was glad when Rose spotted her before anything horrible happened to anyone else. She knew what people with superhuman strength could do; she’d dated someone with it. She looked around for a moment and then motioned for them to go somewhere quieter. “It helps if you tell me which he you’re looking for first, Rose,” she said. “I’ve had quite a few of the displaced in here since the earthquake. Either they’ve gone to a hotel or they’ve been sent to the hospital because their injuries were too severe for us to treat here. But if you tell me specifically who you’re looking for, I can tell you where they are to the best of my knowledge.” Rose rolled her eyes. Shouldn't it be obvious who she was looking for? As far as she knew, none of her other close friends had gotten themselves hurt lately. "Jim, they told me he got hurt and that he was here, but these other idiots say they haven't seen him. Where the hell is he?" Some part of her knew she was actually being kind of unreasonable, but she'd been arguing with people who didn't seem to know a damn thing for what felt like at least an hour. She was worried, she was stressed, and she just wanted someone to tell her what the hell was going on and whether or not her friend was going to be okay. Of course, she knew she probably shouldn't be taking that out on Molly and she sighed, dragging her hands through her hair in frustration. "I'm sorry, I know it's not your fault. I just really need to find him, okay?" “Ah,” Molly replied, nodding. “It’s all right. I’ve been so busy here I haven’t been paying attention to much else. He was here, oh, an hour ago? But because his bone was protruding from his arm we had to send him along to the hospital for surgery since we don’t have the means to do that here.” Then her eyes went wide as she realized she was probably making things sound much worse than they actually were. “He’ll be fine, though! He was perfectly conscious and other than a bit banged up from the fall and having a few rather nasty looking but not so serious cuts, he was all right.” Molly pulled out her mobile. “Do you think you could pull off posing as his fianceé? They’re being quite strict about limiting visitors to immediate family in light of everything, but if I call the hospital and tell them you’re the closest thing to family he’s got they may let you see him once he’s out of surgery, or at least they can update you on how he’s doing.” "What fall? What even happened to him?" Rose hated being out of the loop, but she kind of felt like she was missing a lot of puzzle pieces here. She was glad to know he'd be okay, but she still wanted to know what had happened. Still, she nodded at Molly's question. "I can pose as whatever I have to if it'll get me in to see him." Not that she wouldn't just sneak in if they tried to tell her no. Rose had broken into a high security prison once. A hospital would be nothing after that. And an update wasn't going to be good enough. She needed to see him. She needed to see for herself that he really was okay. “From what I understand, he was surveying what was left of Greaves House and was on some of the rubble when it shifted and he fell. He doesn’t have a concussion, but there was a gash on his left leg about ten centimeters long, and smaller cuts on his legs and back and arms. He landed at an awkward angle and broke his left arm, and the bone pierced the skin. That was what he told me when I looked him over, at least,” she said. She began looking through her mobile for the phone number of the best person to contact. “I’m going to contact the hospital administrator, and then the head of the surgical ward. Either of those two people can ensure you get in to see him with little to no fuss,” she said. “Chances are if they think you’re engaged to him they’ll let you into his recovery room until he wakes up and they clear him to leave. I imagine he’ll be done with surgery shortly, depending on when they got him in. And if he isn’t in surgery yet, I’m sure they’ll let you see him yourself.” She looked at the young woman closely. “You care about him quite a bit, don’t you?” Rose let out a long, creative string of curse words when Molly explained what had happened. "That fucking idiot," she added, shaking her head. To the outside observer, she probably sounded pissed. Her actual feelings were more complicated than that. When Molly explained what she was doing, Rose gave her a grateful look, though. Whatever it took to get her in over there. She would have pretended anything at this point. Talking about her feelings wasn't something she was willing to do with just anyone and she hesitated a moment at Molly's question, but then she nodded. "Yeah, I do. He's one of the best friends I have here." Of course, it was more complicated than that. He was so much more than just her friend, but the thought of admitting that out loud scared her. Molly grinned at the string of curses. Oh, she could tell Rose cared very much, and if something like this had happened to anyone Molly was close to, either at home or here, she probably would have sounded much the same. This was a good thing. James needed people around him who cared. As much as she had lost in the year she’d been there, he’d lost a lot too, and when he made a post where he lost yet another person he cared about she worried. Her former boyfriend would have rolled his eyes at that and possibly gone on a rant about the Captain needing a thicker skin, but James had always been nice to her when he could have completely side-eyed her for her own choices in who she associated with, and she appreciated that. “Good,” she said when Rose answered her question. “I suggest you stay close to him, then. He deserves to have people who care about him around him as often as possible. He’s a very good person, one of the best I know. And I get the feeling you may need to force him to actually rest and heal, which I believe you’re more than capable of doing.” She put her mobile to her ear after she dialed the first number. “I’ll find out whether he’s in surgery and where he’ll likely be by the time you get to the hospital before you go.” Rose just nodded. Oh, she’d make him rest. She’d hold him down, herself if she had to. There was a chance she was also going to hit him for being so stupid to get himself hurt like this, but she’d damn well make sure he didn’t hurt himself worse. “Thanks Molly,” she said after a moment, once again letting her gratitude show. She was feeling a little calmer now that she had some answers, but she was still anxious to get over there and see for herself how he was. That made it hard to wait patiently while Molly made her call and did what she needed to do, but she reminded herself that she was actually helping her out, so it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to piss her off. Molly got the information she needed and then passed along the fact that Rose was on her way to the hospital. She ended the call and then turned to Rose. “He’s in surgery now. They aren’t quite sure how long it will be, but he went in twenty minutes ago, so maybe a little less than an hour? But if you go to the third floor the hospital administrator said you can wait there until he’s taken to a recovery room, and then you can wait for him to wake up in the recovery room.” She reached over and gently squeezed Rose’s arm. “I assure you, he’ll be fine, other than being sore for a while. I’ve had friends who’ve had arms broken like that before and it’s aggravating to wear the cast, so he might be irritable, which means he’ll be irritating, but bear with him. And since he didn’t get a concussion, feel free to smack him on the back of the head for doing something so foolhardy. I would have done it but he was in immense pain when I saw him.” Rose nodded as she committed everything Molly told her to memory. She didn’t love the idea of having to wait, but hopefully it wouldn’t be long. Her reassurances did a lot to soothe her, too. If he was going to be okay, she guessed that was the important thing, even if she was kind of furious with him for putting himself in danger like that. Nevermind that she’d done much more reckless things herself. “Oh, he’ll definitely be in immense pain again when I’m done with him,” she muttered anyway. “I’m going to kick his ass for being such an idiot.” Her expression softened as she thanked Molly again, though, before leaving to make her way over to the hospital. Once she was there, she went up to the third floor like she’d been told. Molly was true to her word. Rose was shown to a waiting area and it wasn’t long after that when someone came to tell her he was in recovery. He’d be unconscious for a little longer, but Rose moved quickly into his room, anyway. She pulled a chair up to the bed and sat there, watching him carefully while she waited for him to actually wake up. It was like coming out of a blank state of nothingness only to realize every single part of his body ached. It’s what he got for falling off of fifteen feet of rubble, he thought to himself. It was one of the few full fledged thoughts he actually had. He knew he wasn’t the only one to get hurt because the shift had been unexpected, but he’d been hurt the worst. At least, as far as he knew he was the only one who had broken a bone. The next really coherent thought he had was Rose was going to kill him. She was going to beat him until he was black and blue and then she was going to kill him and then maybe she’d have Regina bring him back to life and do it all over again. It had been an accident, a really stupid accident, but he’d gotten hurt and she wasn’t going to take it well. He’d have to prepare himself for that. Hopefully he got the chance to explain before she started whaling on him. He opened his eyes and then closed them again. It just seemed so damn bright all of a sudden. “Can’t it be darker?” he murmured, still partially asleep. “Oh, good, you’re awake,” was the first thing Rose said before she sat up straighter and punched him in the arm - the one that wasn’t in a cast, at least. She wasn’t that mean. She also wasn’t about to give him a chance for making excuses. “Are you out of your fucking mind?” she asked him. Her eyes were flashing angrily, but there was a stinging sensation that told her she was also in danger of crying. Hopefully, she actually managed to look more pissed off rather than on the verge of tears. The reality was probably that it was a combination of both. She knew he would be okay. She could see that now. But that didn’t change the fact that she’d been terrified when she’d first heard about what had happened. She wasn’t so much afraid for him now, but she still couldn’t seem to get her emotions under control as she realized how much worse it could have been. “Seriously, were you trying to get yourself killed?” He winced. He already knew that whole part of his arm was going to be bruised and the punch hurt like hell. He was going to wring the neck of whoever it was who told her he was in the hospital. And how did she get in there, anyway? Then it hit him: Molly. Molly had to have told her. That was one neck he absolutely wouldn’t wring for fear that her boyfriend would come back and actually succeed in murdering him, truce or not. “Damnit, that hurt,” he said in a pained tone. He opened his eyes and looked at her. “I was not the only one on the area that dislodged. And we were told it was mostly stable. And besides, I’m the owner. Who the hell else was going to survey the damage? The Seal took my assistant manager away a while ago.” "I don't care. Someone else. Someone who isn't you," she argued, stubbornly. "Someone who didn't just fucking promise me he wasn't going anywhere." Yeah, those were definitely tears in her eyes and she had to squeeze them shut for a moment before she actually started full on crying. She knew she sounded unreasonable and probably a little hysterical. She knew he wouldn't have gotten hurt on purpose. That didn't make her feel any better about the fact that she was sitting next to his bed in the hospital, though. “Hey,” he said quietly, lifting up his less injured arm and trying to reach over to touch her face. It was hard, though, when it felt like he was wading through water. “I’m okay though. I mean, it wasn’t a bad fall. I just have bumps and bruises and a broken arm. I’m going to keep my promise of not going anywhere.” "Not if you keep doing stupid shit like that, you aren't! Molly said it was like 15 feet. You think that's not a bad fall? You're okay because you got lucky! Do you know how long it even took me to find you?" She was clearly freaking out and she knew she was probably even overreacting, but she couldn't help it. All she could think about was how much worse it could have been. "Do you have any idea how scared I was?" Her voice went a little quieter on that last question, as she finally admitted what she was really feeling. “It wasn’t like it was fifteen feet straight down,” he said, trying to sit up more. “I hit stuff on the way down. And I’m sorry it took you a while to find me. I thought it would have been communicated better. And I’m sorry you’re scared.” He reached over for her hand. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I mean, it was an accident. I didn’t actually mean to get hurt.” He sighed and shut his eyes again. “Look, I promise I won’t do a whole lot more of this. I already checked out the Youth Center, and there’s no point in going back to Greaves House because nothing was salvageable. So if the doctor’s tell me I have to do bed rest or something I will just stay in one spot where you can watch me like a hawk.” "You still got hurt," she grumbled, but she moved from the chair to sit carefully on the edge of the bed. She even helped him sit up a little more and managed to refrain from hitting him again, even though she kind of wanted to. "Molly told me to hit you, too," she added, because that completely justified her doing it. "Don't you dare tell me you would be any calmer if I was the one in that bed." However much she might have been overreacting, Rose knew that much was true. She was pretty sure if she'd pulled something so dumb, he'd be yelling at her just as much. He shook his head. “I swear, I let her get away with so much because I’m honestly afraid if I ever actually did anything to hurt her that would be the minute the Seal brings her boyfriend back with all his past memories intact and he delivers an epic and very painful beating which he’d probably been itching to do for a year and a half and would have if it wasn’t for the truce and the fact we promised little Bo we’d get along. But I’m going to tell her that next time she should specify to you that you hit a part of my body that isn’t already injured.” He thought about it a minute and then sighed. “Yeah, I’d probably be freaking out a bit. I mean, you got shot and I was in another country and I started panicking, so…” He looked over at her. “But other than being really sore for a few days and stuck with this cast on for I don’t know how long, it could have been worse.” "She told me to hit you in the head, actually," Rose admitted, "but you should really be grateful I didn't hit your broken arm. And that I only actually hit you once. Yeah, it could have been worse, but I didn't even know how bad it was for over an hour. All I knew was that you'd been hurt and no one could even tell me where you were." It was probably some kind of karmic payback for all the times she'd laughed off some stupid injury or another, but she didn't think he was taking this seriously enough. She scooted closer, carefully leaning her head against his shoulder in a way that hopefully wouldn't jostle his injuries too much. She didn't want to hurt him, but she needed to be close to him for a minute. “You probably should have hit me in the head,” he said as she got settled. “That’s the only part of me that doesn’t hurt right now.” He moved over a bit, moving slowly, and trying not to get wires tangled as he did. “I really am sorry you worried. I know how it is when no one tells you how bad someone’s hurt and you’re worrying.” “Just don’t do anything like this again, okay?” She felt a little calmer now, just being close to him and being able to see that he really was just a little banged up. “I don’t think I could handle it if anything seriously bad actually happened to you.” It scared her to admit that, but she was pretty sure it was true. Maybe she’d eventually pick herself up and move on if something did happen, but that didn’t mean she wanted to lose him. That didn’t mean it wouldn’t hurt a lot if she actually did. “I will do my absolute best to not get seriously hurt, I promise,” he said. “I mean, aside from if there’s another apocalypse or something. But even then, I’ll try really hard. Just promise me the same thing, okay? I don’t want to lose any more people I care about, but especially you.” “Well, I don’t climb piles of rubble,” she teased him a little. “I’m not going to get hurt, I promise. I told you before, you’re stuck with me. I’m not going anywhere.” She meant it, even if she knew it wasn’t a promise she could be sure of keeping. Something could happen, she could easily get hurt or worse. But so could he. It was like she just realized now, today, how easily she could lose him. That terrified her, but it also made her realize how stupid she was being. She’d been trying to deny what she really felt for him, but in that moment she decided that was dumb. If either one of them could be gone tomorrow, didn’t that mean they should make the most of the time they had? Before she could overthink it or talk herself out of it, Rose shifted slightly, turning her head toward his and kissing him. He was surprised when she kissed him but even though he was sore as hell he wasn’t going to pass this moment up, just in case it didn’t mean what he wanted it to mean. He couldn’t kiss her for too long because he was still kind of tired, and when it ended he looked at her. “Just so I know...I mean...was that you kissing me because you’re happy I’m okay? Or was it something else? Just so we’re clear.” “That was me kissing you because I don’t want to keep waiting. I don’t want to regret not taking the chance to be with you. We don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow or even a week or two from now. I hope we’re both going to be around here for a really long time, but I just don’t want to spend any more time running away from the way I feel about you.” Maybe she was making a mistake. Maybe this really would end up with one or both of them getting hurt, but since when had Rose Hathaway been afraid to take a risk? “Good,” he said with a grin. With as much as he had lost, both in terms of people and belongings and places that meant things to him, he’d come to that conclusion a while ago. While he’d been more than willing to let her wait and figure things out herself, the fact she seemed to have chosen him over more waiting made him pretty damn happy, to be honest. Maybe whatever curse that had been laid on him was broken after all. As much as he really wanted to kiss her back he was still sore and still tired. “I think you should stay right here until someone tells you to move, and then ignore them and keep staying here,” he said, shutting his eyes. If he got to keep her close for a very long while he’d be very happy with that. Very, very happy. "Lucky for you, that was my exact plan," Rose told him. "Molly told me I might have to hold you down and make you rest, so I figure I should stick close by just a in case. Besides-" she paused dramatically and her smile turned a little mischievous, "Molly told the staff I'm your fiancée, so they probably won't even try to kick me out." Her tone was light and teasing, but the truth was that Rose didn't want to leave his side anytime soon, either. If anyone tried to make her, things were probably going to get ugly, so she hoped what she'd just said was accurate. She didn't really want to have to punch any doctors or nurses, but that didn't mean she wouldn't. He reached over to keep her close. Other than having a plate in his arm and having it in a cast for the next two and a half months, and then physical therapy when this was all over, this wasn’t so bad. He knew he could have been hurt worse but he wasn’t, Rose was going to give him a chance and she was here now and she was close, and there really wasn’t much more that could make the situation much better. He was quite glad that, for once, things seemed to work out with only the smallest amount of inconvenience. “You think if I kiss her on the cheek and Khan comes back he won’t kill me?” he said drowsily when she dropped the fiancee tidbit, his tone amused. That was going to be interesting if anyone else found out, but it really was the perfect excuse for her to stay in the bed if the staff would allow it. “If someone gets physical, though, hop out of bed for a bit, then climb back in when they leave. The doctor said I’m not staying too much later.” "I think I'll kill him if he tries." Rose knew he was half-joking, but she meant it. He'd long ago become one of those people Rose would protect with her own life, if it came to that. It was why he's made such good bait for Dimitri when he'd first showed up here, a fact Rose was still kicking herself over. "Get some sleep," she added, some of the fierceness fading from her voice. "I promise I'll be right here when you wake up and then we can go home to a much more comfortable bed. Staying close soothed her as much as it did him. The longer she laid there with him, listening to the slow, steady sound of his heartbeat as he rested, the better she felt. She was starting to feel a little stupid for freaking out the way she had, but she didn't necessarily regret it. Maybe this was just the push she'd needed to accept what she hadn't wanted to. At least, it had been the push she needed to act on what she actually wanted in this instance. She didn't sleep, even though a part of her wanted to. Rose thought it was better to stay awake and alert, so she just laid there with him and kept an eye on their surroundings. Soon enough, he was awake again, and the doctors had checked him out and pronounced him free to go home. "You ready to bust out of here?" Rose asked him, grinning as the stood at the desk where his discharge papers were being processed. "It's a shame you don't get a wheelchair. We could have done donuts in the parking lot." “We could always ask for one,” he said with a grin, feeling more alert. It was a good thing he’d gone back to sleep because if he’d had to get back to the cabin in the state he had been in things could have gotten interesting., Either that or Rose would have had to carry him all the way to the bed and while he didn’t doubt she could do it he would rather have walked there on his own two feet. Just as she said that the nurse pointed to something and he laughed. “Guess you get your wish after all, Rose,” he said. “I have to be in a wheelchair until I get to the hospital parking lot.” He finished filling out the paperwork and then dutifully went to the wheelchair that a nurse brought over and sat down. His arm ached but the doctor had given him a day's worth of heavy narcotics with a prescription for more, provided he could find a place to fill them. He hadn’t been concentrating on any of that since the earthquake. He looked over at Rose. “So just how are we getting home?” "Sweet." He was definitely looking better and that had done a lot to improve her mood, so Rose was back to her normal, wisecracking self. As good as he looked, though, she knew they couldn't walk all the way home. That just didn't keep her from cracking jokes before offering a serious answer. "Well, with the painkillers they gave you, I figured you could just fly," she teased, before saying, "Don't worry. I have a plan." Once they were outside, she was able to get them a taxi which got them a lot closer to the cabin. They still had to do a little walking, but soon enough, they were walking into the cabin. Rose realized too late that she was holding his hand as they walked inside. Damn, Regina was going to have a field day with this. --- It was hard to believe just how much she had changed in the two years that she had been in Lawrence. Back when she had first arrived she never would have cared for as many as she did. She never would have given her own life for another. Or fallen in love. But Lawrence had a way of changing you the longer you stayed there. Whether for good or bad that was entirely up to the individual. Regina certainly believed that it had changed her for the better. Sure, there were still times she truly hated the Seal. But had the Seal not taken her from Storybrooke two years ago she would not have her infant son who had become her world. Just as his brother had been. She also wouldn’t have been waiting up for her dearest friends to return. Her body refused to rest until everyone she loved was tucked in to their respective beds for the evening. And so, that is why, Regina, was still awake while the rest of her family slumbered. Rose had left to retrieve Jim and until they had both returned she would not be able to rest at all. One never knew when the Seal was next going to decide to screw with them. At least with everyone tucked in where she could easily find them she felt she was more capable of protecting them. The further apart they were from one another the more difficult that would be. Regina had been mere seconds away from texting and calling Rose when she heard footsteps entering the cabin. From where she was sat, Regina, could see them both. And when she saw their linked hands her eyebrow raised and a smirk appeared on her face. just friends or close friends they had both told her. They’d tried and tried to convince her. But she had known. Just friends was a complete lie and this was proof of it. “Well, well, well, what do we have here.” --- Of course Regina was there right when they got inside. Of course she was. She should have known, because Regina had a tendency to sit up waiting when she didn't know where everyone was. It wasn't actually that late, but it had been hours since she'd even checked the messages on her phone, let alone checked in with Regina or anyone else. As horrible as it sounded, she'd kind of forgotten about the world that existed apart from the two of them once she'd heard about his injury. Then, once she'd tracked him down and found out he was okay, she had still been focused on him she'd sent Regina a text on her way to the hospital, she thought she dimly recalled, but that had been long enough ago to worry their friend, probably. Rose didn't embarrass easily, but there was the slightest flush in her cheeks at Regina's words. A part of her wanted to drop her - well, boyfriend's, she guessed. That was going to take some getting used to - hand and deny anything was going on, just because she didn't want to deal with Regina's smug comments, but she decided she could endure the teasing. It was going to happen sooner or later, anyway. She didn't have any plans to broadcast what was going on between them, but she wasn't going to hide it, either, especially not from one of their closest friends. "Captain Dumbass here decided it would be fun to fall off a 15 foot pile of rubble," she said, rolling her eyes and pretending that she didn't know what Regina was actually referring to. Sorry I didn't call you back. Apparently they actually frown on you using cell phones in a hospital or something." She went for a slightly flippant tone, which she knew wouldn't fool Regina in the slightest, but she still couldn't help trying. She hadn't slept at all whole he'd been napping in the hospital and she was kind of tired. The thought of going to sleep now sounded awesome, but she still had to go out and get his meds before the stuff they'd given him at the hospital completely wore off. And probably something to eat, too, unless Regina planned to cook for them. She was kind of hoping the interrogation or whatever she had planned could wait. |
